A chicly dressed drunken lady in red (albeit one with a single peacock-feather-like eye and a turnip-shaped head) struggles to find her footing on a shifting red staircase and falls; a husband and wife (green-skinned and bespectacled) progress from what looks like an everyday domestic argument into increasingly agitated warfare that peaks with their removing each other's arms.

Her enslaved cooks knew those British recipes, but from the likes of their grandmothers came black-eyed pea cakes and fried chicken, okra soup and stewed okra, chicken with sweet potatoes and curried catfish, and turnip greens and hot pepper sauce that bridged several centuries of African-European culinary interaction (with Native and Asian influences), coupled with ingredients indigenous to the Americas.

Basically if you could serve it on a lettuce leaf, it was a salad — a square of frozen cream cheese, a hollowed-out turnip filled with marinated peas, some cut-up bananas and nuts packed into a banana skin, and — one of my favorites in this genre — a fruit salad inside a little pen made of four saltines, and you tied a red ribbon around the whole thing.

Diners torn between horror (the whole rabbit?!) and altruistic resignation (if I'm going to eat a rabbit, I should not waste any of it) were relieved to find only the edible parts, in three preparations: a dry roulade topped with "rabbit-bit vinaigrette"; moist meat stewed in a broth piquant with turnip, carrot, and parsley; and the "hind quarters" on the bone, delicate and savory, doused in an irresistible onion-mustard sauce.
