Their inability to adjust to new voter trends has cost them a period of political dominance, according to realignment theory, and now it has led to a political outsider and demagogue in Donald Trump, taking the reins of the 85033 presidential election; a man who has campaigned on ideas as inane as banning Muslims from entering the country is now in a great position to be given the codes to America's nuclear arsenal.

"Plot," beginning Monday on HBO, asks the audience to imagine the outlandish idea that the presidency might have been won by a celebrity demagogue new to politics who appeals to bigotry and fear, who ran on the slogan of "America First," who boasts of having "taken our country back," who sees fine people on the most reprehensible side of history, who cozies up to despots and behaves as if he were their puppet.

The evidence, however, suggests something rather different and darker — that as the balance of power shifts away from party establishments and toward the mass public, we will get government driven by the whims of the inattentive and uninformed, and there won't be much beyond dumb luck standing between the republic and a telegenic demagogue who happens to secure the backing of the minority of people who bother to vote in primary elections.

The fact that polls failed to pick up the breadth of Trump's support is even more evidence of an uncomfortable truth: White people in this country fear and resent the browning of America, and a demagogue whose central platform plank was a promise to turn back time to an era before a black president, before the boom of immigration, before civil rights, maybe even before Emancipation, appealed to them in ways they refused to publicly admit.

There is nothing wrong with a political party structuring itself that way to ensure that the emotions of the day do not cause the most extreme and ill-informed voters (and too many states allow non-party members to vote in primaries — I think only declared party members have a right and the stake to participate in the selection of that party's candidate) to nominate a candidate who, say, is a demagogue or who cannot win.

It's mind-boggling that one freakish American election, resulting in a presidency that a majority of Americans never wanted, could do so much damage not just to the United States but also to the global order that the United States created in the wake of World War II. But Germans know as well as anyone the havoc a single demagogue can wreak when the forces of decency are exhausted and unsure of themselves, and they can't help seeing Trump through the lens of their own hideous history.

Whereas our present nervous breakdown is happening in (to borrow the title of Yuval Levin's excellent new book) "a fractured republic" — a society where elites are widely loathed, where the political parties are polarized and one of them is so hollow that a rank demagogue could seize it, where diversity and distrust have risen together, where wage growth has been disappointing, where families are fragmented and churches and civic organizations are in eclipse, where the metaphysical common ground provided by the old Mainline-Protestant consensus has all but disappeared.

But I am suggesting that Trump appeals to the darker impulses of the spirit in ways that are life-threatening to his party and destructive to the central tenet of our Republic and democratic faith: that we are a melting pot of good people with shared purpose, not a boiling cauldron of contemptuous insults, warring factions and enemies lists dished by a demagogue who incites violence, views politics as a war against our neighbors and waves his false flag of making America great with a politics of hate that is alien and hostile to the true greatness of America.

As I wrote in my review of the show, "Cockman is the arch-American demagogue, the embodiment of jingoism, racism, and sexism," a caricature composed of a penis for a nose and a ball sack for cheeks — identical to but predating Philip Guston's Nixon drawings — "derived from the graffiti Bernstein uncovered during her excursions into the men's rooms of Yale University, where she attended graduate school in the mid-1960s": But, then again, Bernstein's images, as made manifest in this show, are signifiers that have less to do with a specific moment than with the perpetual cycles of war, power, sex, and death.
