Longtime Queers drummer Hugh O'Neill had taken a forced leave of absence from the band in 1993, after singer and guitarist Joe King (aka Joe Queer) had staged an intervention to get him to stop using heroin. Jay Adelberg, drummer of the Hartford, Connecticut-based band Forklift, filled in with the Queers, performing on the live album Shout at the Queers (1994) and their cover version of the Ramones album Rocket to Russia (released in 1994 as part of Selfless Records' Ramones covers album series). Screeching Weasel drummer Dan Panic then joined the Queers, along with his bandmate Dan Vapid joining as a second guitarist, for the band's fourth studio album, Beat Off (1994), and the live album Suck This (1995). Beat Off had been recorded in Chicago in April 1994, engineered by Mass Giorgini and produced by Screeching Weasel frontman Ben Weasel.

The battalion made the farthest advance of any Australian unit that day, reaching the slopes of Baby 700, but was driven back by a Turkish counter-attack in the afternoon. On 31 December 1944, USS Clay departed for the invasion of Luzon. In the face of kamikaze air attacks, the invasion was successfully carried out on 9 January. Clay herself helped beat off the suicide attacks, and the Japanese erroneously reported her sinking. Clay then returned to Leyte to embark elements of the 1st Cavalry Division, which she also transported to Luzon, arriving on 27 January.

Jeff Gordon took back the lead on lap 252. The sixth caution of the race flew on lap 296 after Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. had a right-front tire failure that caught fire after hitting the wall in turn 4. Gordon swapped the lead on pit road with his teammate Dale Earnhardt, Jr., but this time, Jeff Gordon got beat off pit road. The race restarted with 96 laps to go.

In August 1841, Baker was involved in a violent clash at the junction of Battle Creek and the Snake River, when 35 trappers beat off a large band of Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho. On August 21, 1841, Baker's group encountered a group of Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho warriors. Fraeb died early in the fight, leaving Baker, aged 21, to take charge. This battle led to Bastion Mountain being renamed Battle Mountain.

Goward was helped by the Nationals' decision not to run in the seat but both Labor and the Coalition lost ground.

In 218BC there was some naval skirmishing in the waters around Sicily. The Romans beat off a Carthaginian attack and captured the island of Malta. In Cisalpine Gaul (modern northern Italy), the major Gallic tribes attacked the Roman colonies there, causing the Romans to flee to their previously-established colony of Mutina (modern Modena), where they were besieged. A Roman relief army broke through the siege, but was then ambushed and besieged itself.

Lieutenant Samuel Bartlett Deecker assumed command, and successfully beat off a boarding attack from Clorinde. Pulling Junon clear off the two full-strength French frigates, Deecker tried to escape but found his ship unresponsive. Within minutes, Roquebert and Saint-Cricq had regained their positions on either side of the British frigate and boarded simultaneously, forcing Deecker to surrender at 18:15. The British had suffered heavy losses, with 20 killed and 40 wounded, including Shortland.

Isle of Wight Festival 2007 The festival won the "Best Major Festival" award at the 2007 UK Festival Awards in London in November 2007. This beat off stiff competition from Glastonbury Festival, T in the Park and Reading and Leeds Festivals. This success was followed by promoter, John Giddings, winning the "Outstanding Contribution to UK Festivals" award. In reaction to this, Glastonbury organiser, Michael Eavis, offered to present Giddings with the award personally.

Puressence's fourth album, entitled Don't Forget To Remember, was recorded at Revolution studios in Manchester and produced by Andy Macpherson. The album was released on 24 September 2007. On 5 October 43rd (Wessex) handed most of its positions over to the US 101st Airborne Division, leaving the anti-tank and mortar platoons and 5th DCLI, the divisional reserve, to help out. C Company, along with the ROK police, took charge of the peak. KPA troops continued attacking the 24th Infantry all across its line, probing for weaknesses. On August 25 and 26, C Company beat off several more KPA attacks on Battle Mountain coming along the long ridge extending from Tundok. At one point in these fights, a flight of US Air Force aircraft caught about 100 KPA soldiers in the open and immediately napalmed, bombed, and strafed them.

The American force of 100 departed Buffalo Creek and approached the British vessels in darkness. Caledonia arrived safely, but Detroit ran aground on the southern tip of Squaw Island after the wind had died and the vessel became unmanageable, while under fire from British artillery. Rouvray-Sainte-Croix is a commune in the Loiret department in north-central France. It has long been thought that Rouvray-Saint-Denis was the site of the Battle of the Herrings in 1429, when Sir John Fastolf beat off an attack on an English convoy taking supplies to the siege of Orléans; but in his biography of Fastolf, The Real Falstaff, Stephen Cooper argues that the battle is more likely to have taken place at Rouvray-Sainte-Croix.

Fire from the ships enabled the beach party to beat off a counter attack by large bodies of infantry and cavalry. In January 1644 there was another skirmish. In July 1644 the Cavaliers occupied Tarvin and they beat off a large Roundhead assault. In September the Roundheads captured the place and occupied it with a strong garrison within strong earthworks. The Parliamentary governor of Tarvin was sufficiently confident in the strength of his fortifications and the size of his garrison that he refused to surrender to the Cavaliers even when it was known that Charles I was in the area with an army.

Neal, pp. 20–1. 15th (Scottish) Division established a small bridgehead across the canal near Geel on 14 September, but it attracted no less than 13 German counter-attacks over the next eight days that reduced it to an area less than 440 yards square. Despite the artillery Observation Posts being shelled and disrupted, 181's CO, Lt-Col Dick Bethell, organised fire plans that beat off the attacks. Eventually, the position was abandoned and the division shifted to another sector.

Snow's VII Corps delivered an attack upon the German-held trench fortress of Gommecourt salient on 1 July 1916, as a part of the opening of the Battle of the Somme offensive. The rally was won by local driver, and Safari specialist Joginder Singh. Singh beat off competition from WRC regulars such as Björn Waldegård and Sandro Munari to secure his first WRC victory. The Safari often saw unheralded cars on the winners ramp and this year was no exception - the Mitsubishi Colt Lancer scored no more points throughout the rest of the season. Fiat held on to their lead in the championship for manufacturers through picking up one point for tenth place.

The second siege ended when the now reinforced garrison again beat off the Parliamentarian attack. The third siege however, which started in July 1645, proved to be decisive. On August 21, 1944, under the command of Major Dityuk, Mashkov was deployed in a mechanized infantry battalion that carried out an attack on the railway station Ērgļi in the Madona Municipality of Latvia, now the Ērgļi municipality. On August 22, the battalion appeared to cut off from the brigade's main forces. As the platoon fought to hold its defenses, Lieutenant Mashkov commanded eight soldiers to beat off the enemy attacks, which killed ten German soldiers. During the attack, Mashkov fired from a mounted machine gun.

It was Boardman's order to the gunner Joe Ekins, which killed Wittman. According to the historian Hart, Boardman's unit was positioned in a wood on the right flank of the advancing Tiger tanks. At approximately 12:47, they engaged them, halting the attack, and killing Wittmann. Boardman's squadron (of which he was second in command) beat off the heavy counter-attack and the citation for his Military Cross gives much of the credit for this, and the destruction of 12 German tanks, to him.

On 26 May, Shawsheen joined Ceres and in an expedition up the Nuese during which they captured a number of small schooners and boats. The pre-war 22nd (Lucknow) Brigade and the 32nd (Imperial Service) Brigade (formed in October 1914) were posted to Egypt to help defend the Suez Canal. The 11th Indian Division was formed on 24 December 1915 with these two brigades, and little else in terms of divisional troops. A third brigade (31st) was formed in January 1915 with other units already in Egypt. The division beat off Turkish attempts to cross the Suez Canal on 3–4 February 1915 in the Actions on the Suez Canal.

Gordon signed for League One side Tranmere Rovers on an initial one-month loan deal on 25 March 2010. Rovers' manager Les Parry brought Gordon in to help beat off the threat of relegation, replacing regular left-backs Zoumana Bakayogo and Aaron Cresswell who were both suspended at the time. Operations officially ceased on 15 August 1945 when Japan surrendered, although A Company beat off a banzai charge during the morning that killed one soldier and wounded two others, and another 18 hours later in which another soldier died and seven were wounded. On 9 October, the 32nd Division left Luzon for Japan and occupation duty in a convoy of 31 ships. They arrived on 14 October at Sasebo, Japan on the island of Kyushu. The 32nd stayed in Kyushu until the division was inactivated on 28 February 1946.

On 9 August 1945, the Tungning detachment of the 132nd brigade beat off a direct Soviet attack at Dongning. Nonetheless, the rest of brigade was ordered to withdraw in the evening of the same day, with the left-behind forces outflanked and routed on 11 August 1945. After retreating to Tachienchang, the 132nd brigade was merged with the remnants of the 284th infantry regiment from the 128th division to form a "Tachienchang detachment". It held its positions against some Red Army armoured units until 16 August 1945 before surrendering following the surrender of Japan.

An hour after Jackson called, the PVA loosed a heavy concentration of artillery and mortar fire on G Company's positions and then sent an estimated company in from the north. Using the remaining mortars, automatic weapons, small arms and hand grenades, Captain Jackson and his men beat off this attack. The second PVA assault of the evening came after the Chinese artillery and mortar crews had fired an estimated 1,000 rounds at Jackson Heights within half an hour. One estimated PVA company struck from the north and a second from the south.

Fili Moscow is a Russian rugby union club based in the western part of Moscow. Fili Moscow are sponsored by the Khrunichev Space Centre, builders of the International Space Station. Fili have in modern times found it hard to emulate their achievements during the 1970s, when they won the Soviet title five times. Fili beat off competition from another Soviet-era power, Zelenograd, for the final RPRL place for 2010 and will, like the other new entrant Spartak Moscow, count avoiding cricket scores against some of the more established teams as a success.

By April, 12th the Azerbaijan approach has been stopped in Giulistan – under Chaikend, in the Varanda – under Keshishkend and Sigankh. In Khachen to Armenians in general it was possible to beat off successfully from the Azerbaijanians come from Agdam, and Azerbaijanians have only destroyed some villages in a valley of river Khachen, to northeast from Askeran. It engaged primarily in escort operations after November 1943, flying missions to cover bombers on long-range missions attacking strategic objectives in Italy, France, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Rumania and Bulgaria. The squadron received a Distinguished Unit Citation for its actions on 2 April 1944 when it beat off attacks by enemy fighter aircraft, enabling the bombers it covered to strike a ball-bearing factory in Austria. After the Casablanca landings, Swanson returned to Atlantic convoy duty until July 1943, when she joined the Sicily invasion force. She and were assigned as fire support ships for the landings at Licata, Sicily; but, on 10 July, the night before the landings, she collided with Roe while investigating suspicious radar contacts and went dead in the water with a flooded fire room; nevertheless, she was able to control further flooding, beat off an enemy attack, and retire to Malta for temporary repairs before proceeding home later in July to the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

That morning they were lying in ambush near the crossroad clearing, known as Mark's Mills, just east of present-day Fordyce in Cleveland County. Forming line of battle, the 43rd Indiana's Norris ordered his command to charge Fagan's dismounted cavalry. As the charge commenced, Confederate General William Cabell's mounted cavalry revealed itself from concealed positions in the trees on the south, or right flank. What began as a skirmish at around 8:30 am quickly developed into a very hot firefight with the Federals firing in two directions to beat off the assault.

As a reaction to the Old Guard's attack, Blücher instructed Lieutenant-General Röder to counter-attack with the 2 brigades of the reserve cavalry of the I Prussian Corps. While leading one of the charges in person, the 72-year-old Blücher's horse was shot and fell upon him. He was rescued by Major von Nostitz, and later by one of his aides, and borne in a semi-conscious condition from the field. Gamble was alone on , one of the captured British ships. While he was still recovering from the wound to his foot, two Te I'i war-canoes attacked the ship. The ship's cannon were already loaded, so Lieutenant Gamble stumbled from one gun to another, firing them as fast as he could. Ultimately Gamble beat off the enemy attack single-handedly, but, after the deaths of four of his men in town, there was no choice but to abandon the colony with the remaining seven men, all of whom were either wounded or ill.

Joanna sailed to England to seek further reinforcements from King Edward, which he provided, but the English fleet was intercepted on its way to Brittany by Charles of Blois' ally, Louis of Spain. In a hard- fought battle, the sailors and knights grappled in hand-to-hand combat as Louis' men attempted to board Joanna's ship. According to Froissart, Joanna fought in person "with the heart of a lion, and in her hand she wielded a sharp glaive, wherewith she fought fiercely". Eventually the English forces beat off Louis's ships and made harbour near Vannes.

While defending Hill 532, south of Sudong, he was wounded in hand-to-hand combat. In spite of his wounds, when he saw three machine guns setting up only away, he charged the enemy position with hand grenades from fallen comrades, and was able to take out all three machine gun crews before being killed. His heroic actions enabled his outnumbered platoon to beat off the enemy assault and move to more defensible positions. Sgt Poynter was buried with full military honors in Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego, California.

The location of this action is marked by a memorial on the Waterloo battlefield. After the battle, Mercer's troop marched on Paris with the Allied armies, and formed part of the army of occupation. The two bands' versions have different musical structures and verses, sharing only the chorus in common. The Queers' cover version of Tommy James and the Shondells' 1967 single "Mirage" was originally recorded and released on Beat Off, and was re- recorded for Surf Goddess. They also covered the Undertones' 1979 single "Get Over You" for the EP; this recording was also included on a 1996 Undertones tribute album titled Here Comes the Summer.

Lissan and Hazel, its chatelaine, featured prominently and caught the imagination of the British public. On 5 March, la Peña's vanguard division met a French division straddling the main road to Cádiz and drove them off the road.. Graham's rearguard division, meanwhile, was attacked by two of Victor's divisions. Graham split his force into two brigades; one to face each of the approaching French divisions. In the ensuing battle, Graham's forces beat off the French attacks despite la Peña entrenching his larger force on the isthmus to Cádiz and refusing to aid his British allies. Instead of adding a new member, Weasel moved back to guitar, and Vapid moved back to bass. The band was then asked to record a cover of an entire Ramones album, Ramones (1992), followed later that year by Anthem for a New Tomorrow. Shortly after the record's release, Weasel decided that he no longer wanted to perform live, and Vapid left after falling out with Ben. After Vapid and Panic joined The Queers, to record their album Beat Off, with Ben serving as producer, Vapid was surprised to learn that Weasel had removed his tracks from the final mix.

The French were better ordered than the more loosely formed Flemish knights, and the Allied ranks grew thinner as they were assaulted by the compact French masses. Châtillon and Melun with their knights broke through the ranks of their Flemish counterparts, then wheeled and struck them from the rear, constantly switching targets. St. Pol's knights and the Burgundians engaged in an exhausting struggle against the Flemings, taking no prisoners. With only 23 men, the valiant Martin beat off an attack by three Dutch warships. The English government planned to expand these fortifications (Fort William) in around 1689, but construction didn't begin until after the French admiral Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville captured and destroyed the town in the Avalon Peninsula Campaign (1696). When 1500 English reinforcements arrived in late 1697, they found rubble where the town and fortifications had stood.

On the morning of 6 September, the defenders of Outpost Bruce beat off another attack, finally calling for box-me-in fires that temporarily put an end to infantry assaults. At dusk, however, the PVA again bombarded the outpost, this time for an hour, before attacking with infantry while directing long-range fire at neighboring Outpost Allen to the southwest. The Marines defending Outpost Bruce survived to undergo further attack on the early morning of 7 September. Two PVA companies tried to envelop the hilltop, using demolitions in an attempt to destroy any bunkers not yet shattered by the latest shelling.

William Walker the self-proclaimed American President of Nicaragua, who conquered the Nicaraguans and occupied their country from 1855–1857 Costa Rica, Honduras, and other Central American countries united to drive Walker out in 1857. During this time, Granada was burned and thousands of Central Americans lost their lives. The final battle of what Nicaraguans called the "National War" (1856–57) took place in the spring of 1857 in the town of Rivas, near the Costa Rican border. Walker beat off the attacks, but the effort diminished the strength and morale of his forces and he soon succumbed.

The Arbella was on an approach to Boston Harbor and beat off the initial attack, escaping up Nantasket Roads into the channel off the East Head of Long Island. Obviously, this British transport did not get the word about the evacuation of Boston. Captain Tucker's Marblehead, Massachusetts privateer took up the chase from Broad Sound along with an armed vessel from Rhode Island that approached the Arbella from the east side of Long Island. They found that the Arbella had grounded but was still able to fight, as her guns shattered Tucker's spars and riddled his ship's sails and Pine Tree Flag.

The following year, Dashwood's command was employed on operations within gunshot distance of the French batteries in Brest harbour, and on one occasion, during a foggy night, he rescued the British frigate HMS Alcmene, after she had become grounded and began drifting among the rocks. On 31 July, while stationed off the north-coast of Spain, Dashwood beat off the 44-gun French frigate L'Artémise; after a vigorous action of an hour and 29 minutes. On 28 September, about 40 leagues to the north of Cape Pinas, he discovered a large ship, apparently of similar force to her former opponent.

Underway again on the 22nd, The Sullivans covered the sortie of Task Groups 58.2, 58.9, and 50.15 from Majuro, bound for the Palaus, Yap, and Woleai Islands. On the evening of the 29th, while the American warships were approaching the target area, enemy aircraft attacked but were driven off by the anti-aircraft fire from the ships. The next day, The Sullivans screened the carriers during air strikes and that evening helped to beat off a Japanese air attack.

Ashras gave command of his cavalry to Thabit Qutnah, who managed to rout the raiders and drive them to Amul. There the Arabs defeated the Türgesh, although a decisive victory eluded them as Türgesh reinforcements crossed the river and allowed the raiders to escape to safety back over the Oxus. At length Ashras got his forces across, linked up with Qatan ibn Qutayba, and began to advance on Bukhara. The Arabs beat off attacks to reach the trading town of , some five farsakhs—roughly —south of Bukhara itself and outside the oasis that surrounded the latter.

5th Guards Rifle Corps was in the first echelon with 94th Rifle Corps, facing a breakthrough sector 8 km wide, with the immediate objective of destroying the enemy forces in the Pilkallen area, before advancing westward and capturing Tilsit by the end of the fifth day. The offensive began on January 12, 1945, and made immediate progress. However, on the 14th the Germans launched heavy counterattacks along the front while the Soviet advance ran into deeply echeloned defenses. 39th Army beat off as many as 15 such attacks by up to a battalion in strength, backed by 8-16 tanks apiece.

While being the Geschwaderkommodore of JG 1 Oesau frequently received his share of Hermann Göring's anger and frustration over the failure to beat off the Allied bomber offensive. Göring questioned the commitment of commanders who were not flying regularly and thus not really "leading" their respective units. In this context it should be stated that in order not to risk one of the Luftwaffe expert's life [German fighter aces were called Experten], there was an automatic ban on Oesau for further combat flying since his 100th victory. Perhaps the ban was lifted temporarily or bypassed when he was appointed Geschwaderkommodore of JG 1\.

Forced into a corner, they decided to stake their hopes on a surprise attack on the French. That very night, the French were attacked by thousands of Vietnamese insurgents organized by the two mandarins. De Courcy rallied his men, and both his own command and other groups of French troops cantoned on both sides of the citadel of Huế were able to beat off the attacks on their positions. Later, under the leadership of chef de bataillon Metzinger, the French mounted a successful counterattack from the west, fighting their way through the gardens of the citadel and capturing the royal palace.

Webb first stood for the Lyttelton Borough Council in the September 1879 elections. He was one of six candidates for three available positions and coming fourth, he missed out. A year later, he topped the local poll and was elected as one of three new councillors. At the 24 November 1880 mayoral election, Webb challenged the incumbent, Harry Allwright, for the Lyttelton mayoralty, but Allwright beat off his challenger by 197 to 108 votes. At the 30 November 1881 mayoral election, the result between Allwright and Webb was much closer, with just nine votes between them.

The more experienced and bold Gligor Sokolović became the voivode of a band that would fight in the Prilep region (Prilepska četa). Rista Cvetković-Sušički, a former friend and voivode of Zafirov, was sent for Poreče where Micko Krstić impatiently waited for him with the band. Poreče was a source for the rebels; every villager was a martyr and hero, and although Poreče was small, it beat off all attacks, and from it, troops entered all sides, as an effectuation for the struggle. The fourth band was firstly sent to Drimkol, Ohrid, its voivodes being Đorđe Cvetković and Vasilije Trbić.

On 18 April 1672 Wrenn was appointed commander of the Hopewell fireship, and in the following year of the Rose dogger. After the peace with the Dutch Republic he was lieutenant of the Reserve; in 1677 he had command of the fireship Young Spragge; in 1679 he was lieutenant of the in the Mediterranean with Morgan Kempthorne, and was so still in May 1681, when she fought a brilliant action with seven Algerine pirates. After Kempthorne's death Wrenn took the command and beat off the enemy. His gallantry was rewarded by a promotion to the command of the Nonsuch on 9 August 1681.

On 20 February 2009, Sinéad, alongside rock band Black Daisy, won the Irish pre-selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 in Moscow, Russia. Sinéad and Black Daisy beat off competition from five other contenders in "The Late Late Show Eurosong Special", receiving 78 points out of a possible 80, to earn the right to represent Ireland in Moscow. Mulvey was described as "shocked but honoured" at the triumph.

In 1444, the Mamluk fleet of Egypt laid a siege to Rhodes, but the Knights aided by the Burgundian naval commander Geoffroy de Thoisy beat off the Muslim attack. After the Fall of Constantinople in 1453 the Ottoman Empire began a rapid expansion and in 1480 Sultan Mehmet launched an invasion of Rhodes commanded by Mesic Pasha. The defenders repelled Turkish attacks from both landward and seaward sides and the invaders left the Island in defeat. The defeat halted a concurrent invasion of the Italian peninsula by Ottoman forces and prevented possible Muslim incursion and control of Western Europe.

Seeing the French line in confusion, the Black Flags surged forward and drove back the French rearguard. During the fighting Rivière was killed. Complete catastrophe was only averted by the coolness of lieutenant de vaisseau Pissère, who assumed command of the demoralised French column, deployed the French infantry behind a dyke on the eastern side of Paper Bridge, and beat off a number of attempts by the Black Flags to cross the bridge and follow up their victory. The battle eventually died down, and Pissère marched the defeated French column back to Hanoi in good order.

The Bastarnae easily beat off the attackers, chased them back to their chief town and besieged them, but they were surprised in the rear by a second force of Dardani, which had approached their camp stealthily by mountain paths, and proceeded to storm and ransack it.

In the Battle of the Sound (8 November 1658), serving as flag captain on Eendragt, he beat off every Swedish attack while his commanding officer, Lieutenant-Admiral Jacob van Wassenaer Obdam, was debilitated by gout. After this heroic conduct against the Swedish, Kortenaer was promoted to vice- admiral on 8 May 1659 and knighted by Frederick III of Denmark in the Order of the Elephant. On 29 January 1665, shortly before the Second Anglo-Dutch War, he was made lieutenant-admiral of the Admiralty of de Maze. He wasn't given command of the confederate Dutch fleet because he was a supporter of the House of Orange.

After the advance on London and the Battle of Brentford, Gerard marched with his regiment and that of Molyneux to Brill to take up his appointment of Governor of Brill and to oversee its fortification and to defend the place against incursions by Parliamentary forces. It was one of several satellite locations chosen to protect Oxford and the King's court, and so Gerard oversaw the building of earthworks to turn the area near the Church into a fort. While Molyneux was absent Gerard with the aid of a regiment of horse (cavalry) commanded by Colonel Charles Gerard, beat off a strong attack by Colonel Arthur Goodwin on 27 January 1643.

Meanwhile, the Taleba Bay force on Stuart transferred to Tieryo, a ship's launch and a ship's whaleboat, and was ashore by 03:30 on 23 October. As Amesbury she is sunk by the more powerful German raider Essen, and as Stratford she triumphs at the end of the story. HMS Cleopatra herself had a distinguished war record, as she was Admiral Vian's flagship at the Second Battle of Sirte, when she was one of four light cruisers which beat off the Italian battleship Littorio and two powerful heavy cruisers in one of the best cruiser actions of the war. The film's battle sequences depict this light cruiser firing her guns and torpedoes in some detail.

Changzhou was the most important of several cities controlled by Zhu Yuanzhang, which constituted the line of defense against the kingdom of Zhang Shicheng, who declared himself as King of Wu and was Zhu's enemy. Tang He and his large garrison had to defend the city and act as a mobile reserve to help other cities when they were threatened. Zhang sent spies rapidly to get information, but their all failed, attributing to Tang's effective commands. Zhang also invaded the city several times, while Tang beat off one attack in February 1358, and in May 1359, Tang captured over one thousand men and forty ships by an ambush.

British landings in Arnhem The 1st and 3rd Parachute Battalions pushed towards the Arnhem bridge during the early hours and had made good progress but they were frequently halted in skirmishes as soon as it became light. With their long and unwieldy columns having to halt to beat off attacks whilst the troops in front carried on unaware, the Germans delayed segments of the two battalions, fragmented them and mopped up the remnants. Early in the day the 9th SS Reconnaissance Battalion (sent south the day before) concluded it was not needed in Nijmegen and returned to Arnhem.

Jellallabad fortificationsThe outpost was no more than a wide place in the road with a fort, held by about 2,000 troops under General Sir Robert Sale. After the massacre of the British force during their retreat from Kabul in January 1842, Jellallabad was surrounded by Afghan forces which launched a series of attacks on the force. The British managed to beat off the assaults, and even captured 300 sheep from the besieging force when rations ran short. Eventually, after five months under siege, Sale mounted an attack against the Afghan forces, captured their main camp, baggage, stores, guns, and horses and the Afghans fled to Kabul.

Boardman's interest in Conservative politics brought his adoption as the Conservative candidate for Leicester South-West, where he fought Labour's Chief Whip, Herbert Bowden, in the 1964 and 1966 elections. Bowden was elevated to the House of Lords in 1967 and Boardman, at the age of 48, then won the parliamentary seat in a sensational by-election beating the Labour candidate Neville Sandelson and turning a Labour majority into a Conservative majority of 3,939 (15.7 per cent). It was a period of considerable Conservative success and Boardman consolidated his hold on the seat. In 1970, he beat off a fierce Labour challenge by just 106 votes.

The explosion occurred and the storming 3rd Europeans rushed in through the smoke and almost immediately met the enemy face to face. The stormers were assailed by a shower of stones and brickbats as well as by men who cut, stabbed and shot at them from the walls. Lieutenant Donne and Ensign Newport were severely wounded while fighting hand-to-hand, but beat off their assailants and retreated under bayonet protection. Kirby Smith began to arrive from Louisiana to oppose Steele after they defeated Banks at the Battle of Mansfield and forced him to retreat in the face of a small remaining force remaining in Louisiana under the command of Lieutenant General Richard Taylor.Kerby, 1972, p. 311. Makaay at Bayern Munich in April 2007 Bayern Munich kept a close eye on Makaay throughout the whole season and finally beat off stiff challenges from Manchester United and Chelsea to get their man. A then club record fee of €18.75 million was paid to Deportivo in the summer 2003 to sign him. He scored 78 Bundesliga and 17 UEFA Champions League goals during his four seasons at Bayern. On 29 September 2004, he scored a hat-trick in a 4-0 Champions League group stage win over Ajax, putting him in a select group of players to have scored a Champions League hat-trick at two clubs. On 21 August 2006, Makaay scored Bayern Munich's 3,000th Bundesliga goal.

On 14 August 2012, Koné signed a three-year contract with English side Wigan Athletic, for a reported fee of €3.5 million. Wigan beat off competition from a number of other English clubs, with the striker being persuaded to sign due to the team's passing style of play. He scored his first league goal in his second match and his first start, an 89th-minute strike against Southampton for the final goal in a 0–2 away win. General Millot, whose health was failing, resigned as general-in-chief of the Tonkin Expeditionary Corps in early September 1884 and was replaced by General Louis Brière de l'Isle, the senior of his two brigade commanders. Brière de l'Isle's first task was to beat off a major Chinese invasion of the Red River Delta. In late September 1884 large detachments of the Guangxi Army advanced from Langson and probed into the Luc Nam valley, announcing their presence by ambushing two French gunboats of the Tonkin Flotilla, Hache and Massue, on 2 October. Although French casualties during this ambush were relatively high (1 officer killed and 32 men wounded), the attack deprived the Chinese of strategic surprise.

The 28th, 29th and 30th Indian Brigades were formed in October 1914 and posted to Egypt as Indian Expeditionary Force F. The 10th Indian Division was formed on 24 December 1915 with these three brigades, and little else in terms of divisional troops. The division beat off Turkish attempts to cross the Suez Canal on 3–4 February 1915 in the Actions on the Suez Canal. Thereafter, the division was soon dissolved with a brigade (30th) sent to Mesopotamia in March 1915, another (29th) detached to Gallipoli from April to December 1915, and the third (28th) detached to Aden from July to September 1915, before it also departed for Mesopotamia in November.

The road block was destroyed with an anti-tank gun and "A" Company passed through "C" Company with "B" and "D" Companies continuing the advance along their own axis. "A" Company encountered resistance from a small group of determined defenders but overcame the enemy with tank and artillery support, taking 11 prisoners from the 1st Battalion of the 22nd Grenadier Regiment of the 490th Infantry Division and the 16th Reinforcement Battalion. By early afternoon the companies were consolidating their positions in the vicinity of Hatter Wuss. As the Qingdao–Jinan railway could be used to transport a large number of soldiers through the mountainous countryside of the Shandong Peninsula, it was of great military significance during the Warlord Era (1916–1928) and Nanjing decade (1928–1937) of China, as various warlords used it in their conflicts. In late 1932, the railway saw heavy fighting as warlord Han Fuju sought to capture its eastern section from his rival Liu Zhennian during a war for eastern Shandong. Liu's troops managed to beat off the attacks, forcing Han to resort to the region's road network (which was of bad quality at the time) to move his army, significantly prolonging the war.

Although harassed by Rossie, Commodore Joshua Barney, an American privateer of superior force, Lennon brought his vessels safe into the English Channel on 18 October 1812. Two years later Lennon was attacked, on 19 July 1814, by the schooner Comet of Baltimore, U.S., an American privateer of sixteen guns and 136 men, which he beat off after a nine-hour fight, in which twelve out of his crew of twenty-two hands were killed or wounded. Two lawsuits followed with the underwriters of the Hibernia's cargo, and Lennon and his owners were liable for £8,000 in damages, or more than double the loss that would have been incurred if Lennon had surrendered. In 1818-19, Lennon and Hibernia transported convicts to Van Diemen's Land.

Learning the details of a plan to capture Fort Donaldsonville, Louisiana, he made plans that enabled the small fort and Princess Royal to beat off the attack. He further demonstrated his heroism on 10 July 1863 when he volunteered to pick up dispatches from USS New London, aground under enemy fire, and carried them to Farragut at New Orleans, a journey of some 85 miles on horseback through enemy territory. He remained in the Navy after the war, serving in United States ports, the South Atlantic and Pacific stations, and at Nagasaki, Japan, until retiring with the grade of Pay Inspector on 25 September 1893. He was called back to active duty during the Spanish–American War and served as pay officer of the Coast Defense System.

The division moved north to Luxembourg from 19 to 21 December, to take part in the battle of the Ardennes break-through. The Romans would have been in difficulty except for the actions of Scipio Aemilianus, who was serving with the 4th Legion as a tribunea middle-ranking military position. Rather than join the attack as ordered, Scipio held back and spaced his men along the partially demolished wall, and so was able to beat off the pursuing Carthaginians when the Romans in front of him fled back through the ranks of his unit. Censorinus's camp, the primary role of which was to protect the beached Roman ships, was badly situated and by early summer was so pestiferous that it was moved to a healthier location. For example, if the attacker plays a the defender must play a higher spade such as the or a card from the trump suit to defend successfully. Born in Rybnik, Woryna comes from a racing family. His late grandfather Antoni Woryna rode for the Poole Pirates in the UK and came 3rd in the Speedway World Championship on 2 occasions, first in 1966 and later in 1970. After a few years of riding in his native Poland with hometown club Rybnik, Woryna got his first break into British Speedway riding with the Coventry Bees, who beat off competition from his grandfathers former club the Poole Pirates to secure his signature. Woryna was recommended to the Bees management by club captain and Speedway Grand Prix rider Chris Harris, and was also given a big thumbs up by another of his new Coventry teammates, former world number 2 Krzysztof Kasprzak.

King Wenceslaus of Bohemia, who had raised an army including Thuringian and Saxon reinforcements, was only a day's march away. According to a letter from Bartholomew of Trent to Bishop Egino of Brixen, the Mongols "attacked the borders of Bohemia and Saxony", but Wenceslaus' cavalry reportedly beat off the Mongol vanguard near Kladsko. A letter from the master of the French Templars to the French king Louis IX at about this time noted that if the armies of Bohemia and Hungary "should be defeated, these Tartars will find no one to stand against them as far as" France. Realizing that their losses at Legnica had been too heavy for them to confront the Bohemian army, the Mongols did not continue their westward advance, but turned back east.

Following a series of strong performances in the 2007/08 Carib Beer Cup, Benn was called up to the West Indies Test squad. He beat off competition from Amit Jaggernauth for the spinner's spot and on 22 March 2008 he made his debut for the West Indies in the first Test against Sri Lanka at Providence Stadium, Guyana. He joined the British Army as an ensign in the 15th (East Riding Yorkshire) Regiment in 1797 and was promoted to lieutenant later that year. In 1805, he joined a company and when on passage to the West Indies, the transport ship in which he was embarked was attacked by a large French privateer schooner, which was beat off with great loss. Burrell became a major in the 90th Light Infantry in 1807, was at the capture of Guadeloupe in 1810, and served during the war in Canada in 1814 and 1815, having commanded the post of Fort-Major during the winter of that year.

Erener herself appeared onstage to perform the final verse of the song on the night. In 2006, it was entered in Die Grand Prix Hitliste, a German version of the above, and beat off stiff competition from ABBA's "Waterloo" and eleven others to finish second.

In June 1917 Manchester Port (1904) beat off a submarine attack with gunfire near Cape Wrath. Manchester Commerce (1899), outward-bound for Quebec City was sunk off northwest Ireland on 26 October 1914, with the loss of 14 crew, becoming the first merchant ship to be sunk by a mine. On 4 June 1917 the second Manchester Trader, en route from Souda Bay in Crete to Algiers, was engaged in a running battle with U-boat U 65 before she was captured and sunk near Pantellaria island, with the loss of one crewmember. The master, Captain F. D. Struss, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, and went on to complete 40 years service with the line after surviving another sinking in the Second World War.

One of the Tigers' greatest moments occurred on August 30, 1862, the third day of the Battle of Second Bull Run, when members of the 9th Louisiana Infantry Regiment beat back repeated Union assaults on the Confederate lines, described as follows: "After successfully breaking up three Union assaults, the Tigers found themselves dangerously short of ammunition. Two men of the 9th Louisiana were dispatched to the rear for more but a fourth Union attack was mounted before they returned. The ensuing clash was 'the ugliyst fight of any" claimed Sergeant Stephens. Groping frantically for ammunition among the dead and wounded, the Louisianians were barely able to beat off the determined Yankees, who threw themselves up to the very muzzles of the Tigers' muskets.

The Queers had a reputation for heavy drinking and regular drug use, including problems with heroin. Band leader Joe King (aka Joe Queer) had tried to cut back his alcohol consumption and to quit heroin, and had staged an intervention for longtime drummer Hugh O'Neill to get him to quit as well; O'Neill was forced to take a leave of absence from the band, and was absent from their cover version of the Ramones album Rocket to Russia (released as part of the Ramones covers album series) and from their 1994 album Beat Off. He rejoined the band that summer, playing on the Surf Goddess EP; Livermore produced the recording, and later recalled the sessions as being extremely enjoyable.Livermore, pp. 228–229.

While not bad by any means, the band had been building up to something on another level with the fantastic Love Songs for the Retarded and Beat Off, which is probably why Move Back Home felt disappointing." Critic Robert Christgau gave the album a rating of "neither" in his Consumer Guide, marking it as an album which "may impress once or twice with consistent craft or an arresting track or two. Then it won't." One critic who did give the album a positive review was Kembrew McLeod; Writing for AllMusic, he rated it 4 stars out of 5 and said "Move Back Home demonstrates that the Queers are getting better and better at channeling the black leather jacket-clad spirit of their punk forefathers [the Ramones].

Livermore later wrote that they made sure to "[take] full advantage of the overdubs and effects spurned by Ben Weasel on Beat Off", and that the few days they spent recording the EP were "truly enjoyable" in comparison to other Queers recording sessions.Livermore, p. 228. According to former Queers guitarist JJ Rassler, the EP's title track dated back to the mid-1980s, one of a number of songs he and King had written together in the lead-up to the Queers' first album, Grow Up (1990). As eventually recorded, the song was co-written by King and Weasel, one of several songs (also including "Fuck the World" and "Like a Parasite") that the two collaborated on and recorded versions of with their respective bands.

In order to go below the deck, the captain kicks the encrustation, which begins to spurt a reddish fluid, and a rhythmic thudding like a heartbeat is heard. The solid surface of the encrustation begins softening and heaving, becoming mobile and gelatinous, and actually begins to dissolve the shoes of the investigators, as if it is attempting to digest them. As events escalate, the lantern is dropped and extinguished; in the frantic attempt that follows to escape the vessel, a crewman is killed as he falls on the undulating surface and it envelopes and dissolves his body. The doctor and the captain manage to get over the side into an old lifeboat where they beat off a pseudopod and manage to escape back to their own vessel.

Carlos Tevez announced on his website that he and Javier Mascherano would be joining West Ham from Brazilian club Corinthians. West Ham confirmed shortly afterwards that not only had they signed the two Argentinians, but that they had signed on permanent deals. West Ham reportedly had to beat off competition from some major European clubs to sign the two young players. West Ham's return to European competition, in the 2006–07 UEFA Cup, was ultimately short-lived as they lost 4–0 over two legs in the first round proper to Italian club Palermo. This marked a major downturn in form leading to eight losses in succession in all competitions as of 24 October, including a shock 2–1 loss away to League 1 side Chesterfield in the third round of the Carling Cup.

The ship was initially built as the Starre in 1615 and renamed the Jason by Sir Walter Raleigh for use in his second expedition to Guiana (then under control of the Spanish) in 1617. Following Raleigh's return it was seized and became a merchant ship, renamed the Angel Gabriel. A stout ship designed and built to cope with combat, even as a merchant ship, the Angel Gabriel was involved in many further skirmishes between 1618 and 1635, including a notable engagement in 1627 off Cales where it was boarded several times but was able to clear its decks each time and eventually beat off three Spanish ships. This was possible because the defenders were able to retreat into the forecastle and sterncastle, which had reinforced bulkheads fitted with gunports for small cannon and shoulder weapons.

On the Prudente, he served in further campaigns, sometimes alone, sometimes with the rest of the division - his notable battles of that period include the Action of 9 September 1796 between six of the division's frigates and the British ships of the line and , in which the admiral refused to press home the advantage won by the French frigates. In January 1798, he took command of the Vertu and, alongside the Régénérée, then escorted a convoy of two Spanish ships of the line back to Europe. He beat off two attacks by the British frigates (in Guinea in April 1798) and (July). Arriving back in Europe, he was rewarded for his services by the Spanish, notably with a magnificent suit of armour, before taking his frigates on to Rochefort.

On the night of 24/25 October 1943, 32 German E-boats attempted to attack Convoy FN 1160 off Cromer. The destroyer acted as close escort for the convoy, with Mackay and the destroyers , and Worcester, together with four MTBs, eight MGBs and four Motor Launchs patrolled the convoy route. The British force managed to beat off the German attacks, with Mackay ramming and sinking one E-boat, S63 and a second (S88) sunk by MGB 603 and MGB 607 while the Naval trawler , which had become detached from the convoy, was torpedoed and sunk by S74. On the night of 5/6 January 1944, Mackay was escorting Convoy WP 457, running between the Bristol Channel and Portsmouth, when it came under attack by seven German E-boats.

The force broke through and reached the northern outskirts of Baruth but the 395th beat off all attempts to take the town. The German group took up positions in the woods north of Baruth and put up fierce resistance on April 27, including hand-to-hand fighting and persistent breakout attempts but over the course of the day the joint actions of the division and a corps of the 28th Army were able to eliminate all but a few remnants. In total, 6,200 prisoners, 47 tanks, 25 armored personnel carriers, 180 guns and mortars and 1,133 motor vehicles were captured. The division remained on the same line the next day as the 9th Army pocket shrank to 10 km north to south and 14 km east to west.

The first election that was contested was held on 20 December 1876, when the incumbent, Rouse, beat former mayor Allwright by 225 to 166 votes. With the Lyttelton Harbour Board to be formed in January 1877, and the mayor of Lyttelton being an Ex officio member of that board, Rouse thus gained an additional role. At the 19 November 1877 nomination, Allwright was the only candidate and thus declared elected unopposed. At the 19 November 1878 nomination, Allwright was again the only candidate. At the 26 November 1879 mayoral election, Allwright beat his challenger, Adam Chalmers, by 127 to 92 votes. At the 24 November 1880 election, Allwright beat off his challenger Samuel R. Webb by 197 to 108 votes.

On 31 December 1942, Achates was on escort duty protecting the convoy JW 51B en route from Loch Ewe to Murmansk when she was sunk in the Barents Sea The German heavy cruiser , pocket battleship Lützow and six large destroyers had been ordered to attack and destroy the convoy. Despite being heavily outgunned the escort, under the command of Captain R. St. Vincent Sherbrooke, beat off the attack and not one merchant vessel was lost. At 11:15, Achates was laying smoke to protect the convoy when she was hit by gunfire from Admiral Hipper, killing the commanding officer, Lt Cdr Johns, and forty crew. The First Lieutenant, Lt L. E. Peyton- Jones, took over command and, despite having sustained severe damage in the shelling, Achates continued her smoke screen operation.

He was the son of another VOC captain, also called Douwe Aukes. He made several trips to South Africa on the ships Maastricht and Vrede and in 1641 he was made captain of the 40-gun Vogelstruys of the VOC's Amsterdam Chamber, which was seconded to Michiel de Ruyter's fleet in 1652 during the First Anglo-Dutch War (with Aukes thus indirectly becoming a naval officer). At one point during the Battle of Plymouth he wandered from the Dutch fleet and was almost surrounded by English ships, but Aukes threatened to ignite a powder keg and blow up the ship, rather than surrender. His crew then managed to beat off an English boarding party, almost sink two English ships, badly damage a third and finally regain the main Dutch fleet.

Reviewing Beat Off for Allmusic, Kembrew McLeod rated it 3 stars out of 5 and commented that it "takes a step back, or so it seems, from the melodic growth shown between Grow Up and Love Songs for the Retarded. Actually, the ratio between melodicism versus dissonant, high-speed punk is probably the same as on Love Songs, but Queers fans have come to expect more." Livermore later wrote that he felt the album suffered from rushed and lackluster production, while King called it and the Queer's following studio album, 1995's Move Back Home, "mediocre", saying they did not measure up to albums put out during the same period by the band's peers, specifically Screeching Weasel's My Brain Hurts (1991), Green Day's Dookie (1994), and the Mr. T Experience's Love Is Dead (1996).

Strang was born in Rutherglen. He was playing for a junior club in Glasgow when English First Division club Birmingham beat off competition to sign him in September 1923. He never appeared for Birmingham's first team, and was allowed to leave the club on a free transfer the following May for Third Division South team Crystal Palace. Described in the Derby Daily Telegraph as a "lean and lanky" centre-half with competence in both the defensive and the creative aspects of his role – "a rare breaker-up and knows a thing or two about feeding his forwards" – Strang had progressed well with Palace and become a regular in the team when, in October 1925, he and forward Bill Hand were charged with breach of contract in respect of training requirements and given two weeks' notice to leave the club.

After a brief overhaul at Mare Island and training at Pearl Harbor, Lamson arrived at Eniwetok 8 August to join the 5th Fleet. For the next 2 months she engaged in patrol duty and ASW screen in the Marshall Islands before reassignment to the 7th Fleet. Departing Hollandia 25 October, Lamson steamed to the Philippines to serve as picket, patrol and screening ship for the massive Leyte assault. Throughout November the destroyer beat off numerous suicide plane attacks aimed at convoys bringing supplies to the Philippines. According to the ships action report; while screening a convoy off Ormoc Bay, Lamson downed two “Dinahs” before a "Tony" made a fast low approach on the starboard quarter and struck the ships number two stack with its right wing and spun around crashing into the after port corner of the transmission room.

Soon after that, Siegfried entered the battle and in a bold advance was able to beat off the Berg troops and the Cologne militia, however with too little support from his back army. In mid afternoon, the Berg and Mark troops, along with the Cologne citizens, had gathered again and started a savage attack on the archbishop's forces.

Although Roy Orbison had recorded the song in 1963, it is Reeves' version of "Distant Drums" which has endured over the years. During its time at the top of the UK chart, the song beat off stiff competition from several major (and living) artists of the day. These included The Beatles - who had entered the UK chart around the same time with their double A-sided release "Eleanor Rigby"/"Yellow Submarine" - and the Small Faces, who had also charted in the UK with "All or Nothing". It was an unexpected achievement for a song that Reeves had recorded for its composer, Cindy Walker, under the impression it was for her private use only and had earlier been dismissed by both the RCA record company and Chet Atkins (a noted guitarist and record producer who worked with Reeves) as unsuitable for wider public release.

The perfect opportunity to attack Katsurayama came in early 1557, when late snow made the passes from Echigo into Shinano impassable and thus isolated the castle from Uesugi reinforcements. As a result, a Takeda army of 6,000 samurai and ashigaru under Baba Nobuharu, one of the renowned "Twenty-Four Generals of Takeda Shingen", launched an assault on Katsurayama in March 1557. This attack was effectively "a race against time", as the Uesugi would send reinforcements as soon as the thaw set in and the mountain passes were open again, and so the Takeda had to capture the castle before that could happen. Baba Nobuharu, one of the "Twenty-Four Generals of Takeda Shingen" and commander of the besieging army Baba Nobuharu's men repeatedly attempted to scale the walls of Katsurayama, but the castle garrison was able to beat off the attacks.

The menace of the recent alliance between the Byzantine Emperor Isaac II Angelos and Saladin, and the more immediate threat of the Turkomans, led to a rapprochement between Leo and Bohemond III: on his accession Leo sought an alliance with the prince of Antioch and recognized his suzerainty. Large bands of the nomad Turkomans had been crossing the northern borders, advancing almost as far as Sis and laying waste on all sides; the two princes joined to beat off a Turcoman raid in 1187. Leo could muster only a small force, but he attacked them with such energy that he routed the bands, killed their leader, and pursued the fugitives as far as Sarventikar, inflicting heavy losses on them. Soon afterwards (between 3 February 1188/4 February 1189), Leo married Isabella, a niece of Bohemond III's wife Sibylla.

"Cush" began his career at Ballymena United where he featured very little and in 2010 he moved to Lisburn Distillery and most notably won the League Cup in 2011 when they defeated Portadown. Following Distillery's relegation, Cushley rejoined Ballymena United where he became famous for his long range goals, with his long distance strike against Linfield getting several thousand views online from Fox Sports. Cushley also had his goal against Portadown in 2013 broadcast on Soccer AM. His most famous moment as a Ballymena player came when, in the Irish Cup against Cliftonville, with United losing 1-0 in the last few minutes, Cushley equalised with a deflected free kick and then almost immediately after scored a free kick to win the game. In January 2016, Crusaders beat off competition from Linfield to bring him to Seaview.

The discography of the Queers, an American punk rock band, consists of 13 studio albums, 9 live albums, 4 compilation albums, 1 video album, 3 music videos, 22 EPs, 1 single, and 1 split album. After forming in 1981, the Queers released two EPs in the early 1980s, Love Me (1982) and Kicked Out of the Webelos (1984), both on band leader Joe Queer's Doheny Records imprint. Their first album, Grow Up, was released in 1990 through British independent record label Shakin' Street Records. The band then signed to Lookout! Records, who reissued Grow Up and released the subsequent studio albums Love Songs for the Retarded (1993), Beat Off (1994), Move Back Home (1995), and Don't Back Down (1996), as well as the compilation albums A Day Late and a Dollar Short (1996) and Later Days and Better Lays (1999).

Guitar and vocal tracks recorded by Dan Vapid (pictured in 2011) were removed from the final mix by Ben Weasel. Although he had recorded guitar and backing vocals for Beat Off in the studio, was credited in the liner notes, and was included in photographs on the album sleeve as a member of the band, Dan Vapid was surprised to learn, after the album's release, that Weasel had removed his tracks from the final mix. He did not learn this until royalty payments were issued for the album's sales and he, unlike the other members, did not receive any: > Of course I thought this was a mistake at first, so I called Lookout Records > to find out what was going on. They had no idea why I wasn't paid, so I > called Ben Weasel to see what the problem was.

He thus served in the Army of the North under generals Gilbert du Motier de La Fayette and Charles-François Dumouriez, commanding the 1st Grenadier Battalion in its reserves from 1 August to 15 September 1792. In that role he converged to guarantee the armée du Grand-Pré's safe retreat to Sainte-Menehould, bringing in all the position's artillery under enemy fire and beat off several Prussian attacks at the entrance to Senuc wood. However, in taking his battalion and a squadron under Chamborand in to support, he was attacked by seven enemy squadrons protected by light artillery and was badly wounded in the arm by a sabre. Wishing to reward his services, the commander in chief made him a colonel on the field of battle, ranking in his regiment from 24th of the previous month, the date at which a vacancy had appeared at the rank of colonel.

The Tuyên Quang garrison, 400 legionnaires and 200 Tonkinese auxiliaries under the command of chef de bataillon Marc-Edmond Dominé, beat off all attempts to storm their positions, but lost over a third of their strength (50 dead and 224 wounded) sustaining a heroic defence against overwhelming odds.

After the reformed division had shaken down, on 4 May, 167th Brigade took over part of the line facing the Gommecourt Salient, where it was due to attack in the forthcoming Battle of the Somme. On 5 May, the battalion received a large draft of veterans of Gallipoli and Egypt from the 2/3rd Bn which was being disbanded (see below). The Gommecourt sector was static – the division's first action was on 18 May when 1/3rd Bn beat off a German raid – but working parties of the battalion were required to dig new communication trenches in preparation for the offensive, and these parties suffered a trickle of casualties from German artillery. The working parties alternated with periods holding the frontline trenches and sending out night patrols. On the night of 25/26 May, 167th Bde dug a new jumping-off trench half-way across No man's land.

This compelled Perdiccas to flee in the direction of his homeland. At daybreak, Brasidas, seeing that the Macedonians had gone, and that the Illyrians and Arrhabaeus were on the point of attacking him, formed his hoplites into a square with the light troops in the centre, and prepared to retreat. Posting his youngest soldiers to dash out where ever the Illyrians and Lyncestians should attack them, Brasidas and 300 picked men went to the rear intending to face about during the retreat and to beat off the most forward of their assailants. Meanwhile, before the Illyrians approached, Brasidas sought to sustain the courage of his soldiers, clearly shaken by the fearsome appearance of a new enemy:Thucydides 4.126 > The present enemy might terrify an inexperienced imagination; they are > formidable in outward bulk; their loud yelling is unbearable; and the > brandishing of their weapons in the air has a threatening appearance.

Wright was 27 years old, and a company sergeant major in the 3rd Battalion, Coldstream Guards, British Army during the Second World War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC. On 25 September 1943 near Salerno, Italy, a steep, wooded hill was being assaulted by the 3rd Bn. Coldstream Guards, and Company Sergeant Major Wright's company, most of its officers killed, was held up near the crest. Sergeant Major Wright took charge and single-handed he silenced with grenades and bayonet three Spandau posts and then led his men to consolidate the position. He then beat off a counter-attack, and disregarding the heavy fire, brought up extra ammunition. Wright's Distinguished Conduct Medal was substituted for the VC on the instructions of King George VI. Wright was born in Mettingham, near Bungay in Suffolk on 10 August 1916.

Halifax Town avoided relegation despite a final-day defeat, because Altrincham also lost, but they faced liquidation and were eventually demoted, giving Altrincham a reprieve. Halifax were demoted and applied to join the Northern Premier League Division One North, but instead Wright moved back to the Conference Premier, by signing for Crawley Town in June 2008. He had played 63 league games for Halifax during his two years. After an impressive season making 41 League appearances, Wright attracted the interest of Football League clubs including Charlton Athletic and Colchester United. On 27 July 2009, Wright was invited for a trial at League One side Brighton & Hove Albion and featured during the 1–0 pre-season friendly defeat to Torquay United. Brighton beat off competition from an unnamed Scottish Premier League club to sign Wright and completed the transfer with Wright signing a two-year contract with the Seagulls.

The Queers had a reputation as heavy drinkers and regular drug users, and by 1993 the members had developed problems with heroin use. Lookout! Records head Larry Livermore, who was in the studio with the band for 1993's Love Songs for the Retarded and for Beat Off, later recalled that singer and songwriter Joe King had decided to sober up, but that while he was able to cut back his alcohol consumption, heroin remained an issue for both him and drummer Hugh O'Neill: > When Joe decided to clean up, there would be no half measures. The guy who'd > helped litter the cover of Love Songs for the Retarded with empty Budweiser > bottles laid down the law: no booze allowed in the studio or backstage > anytime he was playing, recording, or practicing. Joe talked a good game > about alcohol, but his real problem, like Hugh's, was drugs.

On 15 August 2008, Huddersfield beat off the competition and signed Denton from Northern Premier League Division One North side Wakefield for a fee of £60,000, possibly totalling up to £100,000. On 27 November 2008, he joined Conference National side Woking for a month. He made his debut on 2 December, in the Conference League Cup win over Salisbury City, where he scored one and set up two in a 3–0 win. He made his league debut for Woking in their 1–0 defeat at Histon on 6 December. He scored his first goal for Woking in their 1–1 draw with Rushden & Diamonds on 9 December. He returned to Huddersfield Town on 30 January 2008. On 6 March, Denton rejoined Wakefield on loan until the end of the season and scored 12 goals in 13 games, including four in an 8–1 victory over Salford City. Denton joined Cheltenham Town on a six-month loan deal during the summer of 2009.

The minenwerfer barrage lifted from the embankment itself and fell on the 52nd Battalion's support line that ran through the CCS to the rear, although it did not hit any of the occupied posts there and mainly began the destruction of the tents and huts in the CCS itself. Many German machine guns, including one apparently mounted in the Dernancourt church tower, played over the heads of the assaulting troops and concentrated their fire on the edge of the embankment and on the positions of the 24th Machine Gun Company in the quarry and adjacent trench on the slope behind. The combined fire of Vickers guns, Stokes mortars, Lewis guns and rifles beat off the first wave of Germans. Some of the assaulting troops, unable to reach the embankment, began to dig in on the flats between it and the Ancre. They were hard hit by the pair of 13th Machine Gun Company guns farther west, which caused them further casualties.

Ansah, the son of former Southend United player Andy Ansah, had spells with Sydenham Sports club and Charlton Athletic before joining the academy at Arsenal at the age of 10, who beat off interest from several other London-based clubs including Tottenham Hotspur and AFC Wimbledon. Ansah made his way through the club's youth system, making his debut for their under-18 side at the age of just 14 and later impressing in the NextGen Series youth competition. On 4 December 2012, with Arsenal already qualified for the next round of the competition, Ansah was named as a substitute for the club's Champions League group stage match against Olympiacos but remained on the bench during a 2–1 defeat. He suffered a tear of his ACL in July 2013 that ruled him out for eight months, the second time he had suffered the injury, but returned to the development squad in March 2014, scoring in a 5–3 win over West Ham United.

On November 26, in Lviv, the commander of the corps Khan Nakhchivanski conducted a muster of the division. Right from the muster, the regiments of the division were moved to the south-west of the city of Sambor, where they took up indicated combat site on the bank of the San River. A heavy fighting winter work began in the Carpathians. The division fought hard at Polianchik, Rybne, Verkhovyna-Bystra. Especially heavy and bloody battles were fought in December 1914 on San and in January 1915 in the region of Limna-Lutowiska, where the division beat off the enemy's attack on Przemyśl. In February 1915, the division fulfilled a number of successful offensive operations. On February 15, the Tatar regiment fought a fierce battle near the village of Bryn. After a heavy battle, close to melee fights, the enemy was knocked out of this settlement. The commander of the regiment, Lieutenant-Colonel Polovtsov, was awarded the Order of St. George of the 4th degree.

The gunner, John Bulkley, objected strongly to this proposal. He argued to make the secondary squadron rendezvous, the Island of Juan Fernandez, their primary destination, since it was not as close to the mainland as Socorro and was less likely to result in the wrecking the ship on a lee shore. Bulkley was recognized as probably the most capable seaman on the ship; as gunner, he had officer rank. Navigation was technically the responsibility of the master, Thomas Clark, but he, along with most of the officers on board, was held in thinly-disguised contempt by Cheap.Pack, S (1964), p. 35 Bulkley repeatedly tried to persuade Cheap to change his mind, arguing that the ship was in such poor condition that the crew's ability to carry the required sail-plan to beat off a lee-shore or come to anchor was compromised, making Cheap's decision to head for Socorro too hazardous, especially given that the whole area was poorly charted.

Other songs, such as "Muttersprache" (German for "mother tongue") or "Code/Anticode" work with on-beat/off-beat, interplay between two guitars and/or the rhythm and melody section, incorporating jazz chords and dissonant intervals to create tension and form the basis for a mixture of jazz fusion and progressive rock/metal.

Marconnet who was subbed at half time due to the Georgian's dominance over him called Kakovin "a phenomenon" after the match. As well as with Georgia, Kakovin went past Khinchagishvili as Brive's first choice prop, and later he was named in the Midi Olympique team of the first half of the season, the newspaper described him as a "little bull" who was “very mobile, dynamic with ball in hand, and also excels at the scrum area”. His success meant that several much bigger teams than Brive were hunting his signature, in the end the four times European Champions Toulouse beat off competition from Clermont, Toulon and Racing-Métro, and signed him to replace the retiring South African international Daan Human at the club.

Jackson signed for Ipswich Town on 9 August 2018 on a three-year deal (with an option of a further 12 months) for an undisclosed fee. The move reported to cost £1 million, which was described by the Lancashire Telegraph as "Accrington Stanley's first million pound sale", and saw him reunited with manager Paul Hurst, having previously played under him at Grimsby Town. Ipswich Town managed to beat off competitions from "a number of Sky Bet Championship clubs" to sign him. He made his Ipswich Town debut on 11 August, coming on as a substitute for Ellis Harrison, in a 1–0 loss against Rotherham United two days after signing for the club. Three days later, on 14 August 2018, Jackson scored his first goal for the club against Exeter City in the first round of the EFL Cup, with Ipswich eventually losing 4–2 in a penalty shootout after the game finished 1–1.

Agyei came through the ranks at AFC Wimbledon, scoring 35 goals for the club's under-21 team in the 2014–15 season to draw the attention of a host of top clubs, reportedly including West Ham United, Chelsea and Fulham. Agyei eventually signed for Burnley, on a long-term contract to initially play for the club's development squad. After impressing for Burnley's development squad in the 2015/16 season and making his senior Burnley debut in a pre-season friendly against Bradford City, Agyei was made available for a loan move by manager Sean Dyche. Coventry City beat off competition from several clubs in League One and the Championship to secure the loan signing of Agyei on a five-month loan deal. Agyei was handed the number 9 shirt by Coventry City manager Tony Mowbray upon arrival at the Ricoh Arena. Agyei made his professional league debut against Bradford City on 20 August 2016, handing Coventry City the lead with his first goal in professional league football in a 3–1 defeat at Valley Parade.

John William Sayer (12 April 1879 - 18 April 1918) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He was 38 years old, and a Lance Corporal in the 8th Battalion, The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment), British Army during the First World War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC. On 21 March 1918 at Le Verguier, France, Lance Corporal Sayer held the flank of a small isolated post for two hours. Owing to mist the enemy approached from both sides to within 30 yards before being discovered, but the lance corporal, on his own initiative without assistance, beat off a succession of attacks, inflicting heavy losses. During the whole time he was exposed to heavy fire but his contempt of danger and skill in the use of his fire-arms enabled the post to hold out until nearly all the garrison had been killed and he himself wounded and captured.

Adams was born in Stoke-on-Trent and began his career with local side Stoke City making his professional debut against Coventry City in the Full Members Cup in 1985–86. He made a huge impression with his performances for Stoke in his debut season, with his attacking creativity and deadly accurate crossing ability earning him a call up to the England U21 side for their European Championship semi-final tie in Italy. With Stoke's finances poor and many top-flight sides showing an interest in signing him, he was sold to Everton in June 1986 for a fee of £150,000 after the Toffees beat off competition from Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, much to the annoyance to the Stoke supporters who feared that their club was becoming a 'selling club'. In his first season at Everton he helped the side win the First Division title in 1986–87. During his three years on Merseyside he also won two Charity Shield medals and earned his first England U-21 cap in an away game against Sweden.

On July 9, 1755, a force of British Army regulars and the Virginia militia under General Edward Braddock advancing into the Ohio river valley was almost completely destroyed by the French and their Indian allies at the Battle of the Monongahela. Johnson, who had the task of enlisting the League Iroquois on the British side, led a mixed Anglo-Iroquois force to victory at Lac du St Sacrement, known to the British as Lake George. In the Battle of Lake George, a group of Catholic Mohawk (from Kahnawake) and French forces ambushed a Mohawk-led British column; the Mohawk were deeply disturbed as they had created their confederacy for peace among the peoples and had not had warfare against each other. Johnson attempted to ambush a force of 1,000 French troops and 700 Canadian Iroquios under the command of Baron Dieskau, who beat off the attack and killed the old Mohawk war chief, Peter Hendricks. On September 8, 1755, Diskau attacked Johnson's camp, but was repulsed with heavy losses.

This was a fight between a fleet of East India Company merchantmen under command of Commodore Nathaniel Dance and a French naval squadron under Admiral Linois; it was unusual for merchant ships to engage in combat, but they successfully beat off the French in series of engagements, convincing them they were actually facing a powerful force of Royal Navy vessels; this action was later used as the basis for the climactic battle in the book H.M.S Surprise, part of the famous Aubrey and Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian. Government House, Bermuda The East India Company (EIC) also used carronades, and these appear to be larger, and heavier than those that Royal Navy used. In his discussion of the single-ship action in which the French frigate Piémontaise captured the East Indiaman Warren Hastings on 11 June 1805, the naval historian William James compared the 18-pounder carronades on Warren Hastings with the 18-pounder carronades that the British Royal Navy used.

On 28 January 2015, O'Keefe signed for Championship club Cardiff City, who beat off competition from Millwall, for an undisclosed fee on a two-and-a-half-year contract, joining former Palace teammates Danny Gabbidon and Kagisho Dikgacoi at the Cardiff City Stadium. He made his debut against Derby County, having trained with the team for just two days following the completion of his transfer, in a 2–0 loss. He featured in the following two matches but, with heavy competition from Peter Whittingham, Joe Ralls and Aron Gunnarsson, he did not appear for the first team again until 11 April and made a total of just six appearances during the second half of the season for Cardiff. The start of the following season continued the same trend for O'Keefe as he made just eight appearances during the first five months of the season before returning to the starting line up against Wolverhampton Wanderers on 16 January 2016, in a match that Cardiff went on to win 3–1.

On 14 November 2014, Sheffield United of League One beat off competition from clubs in higher divisions to sign Adams on a two- year deal. The fee was officially undisclosed, but the Sheffield Star reported it as a six-figure deal, and the Ilkeston club confirmed "a substantial up- front payment in non-league termsplus a percentage of any sell-on fee." Adams made his professional senior debut on 16 December in a 1–0 home victory over Southampton, replacing Jamal Campbell-Ryce at half time as United made it to the semi-finals of the League Cup. Four days later he made both his first career start and his first Football League appearance, in a 1–1 draw with Walsall at Bramall Lane. In the League Cup semi-final second leg against Tottenham Hotspur on 28 January 2015 at Bramall Lane, Adams replaced Campbell- Ryce after 74 minutes. Five minutes later he had scored his first goals for Sheffield United with two goals in just over two minutes, which would have taken the game to extra time had Christian Eriksen not scored for Tottenham Hotspur in the 88th minute to win 3–2 on aggregate.

Bothroyd playing for Cardiff City in 2010 Bothroyd remained in the Championship, joining Cardiff City, who beat off interest from newly promoted Premier League club Hull City, on 4 August 2008 in a three-year contract for a fee of £350,000. At the start of the season Bothroyd found himself in and out of the team as manager Dave Jones attempted to find his best strike partnership and, after a number of matches, Bothroyd assumed the role of first choice strike partner to Ross McCormack. On 30 September 2008, Bothroyd scored his first goal for the club when he found the net against one of his former clubs, Coventry City during a 2–1 win. It took Bothroyd just under a month to find the net again for the club when he scored twice during a 2–2 draw at Watford. Bothroyd continued in the first team but, on 1 November, he suffered a tear of his hamstring after just 13 minutes of a 2–1 defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers, which was expected to rule him out for between 6 and 8 weeks. He made his return to the team ahead of schedule after three weeks when he played 66 minutes during a 2–2 draw with Reading before being replaced by Eddie Johnson.
