In September, the world soccer body, FIFA, said it had proof that a Saudi company had been pirating the television stream of beIN Sports, a Qatari state-owned company that has spent hundreds of millions of dollars for the exclusive TV rights to major soccer matches in the Middle East.

Of course, there are always some bad actors pirating content in the world, but their behavior isn't contingent upon whether the FCC approves a policy that saves cable customers up to $15 billion in overcharges and makes it easier for subscribers to control their own experience when accessing the programming they've paid for.

By pirating Swiss and other major brands, metal that has been mined or processed in places that would not otherwise be legal or acceptable in the West – for example in parts of Africa, Venezuela or North Korea – can be injected into the market, channeling funds to criminals or regimes that are sanctioned.

A game could be set in the pirating Caribbean or in Ancient Greece or in a cave in 20,000 BC. We could have a game take place ten minutes ago or in the far future, starring one surly kid on the way to a 7-11 or a heroic super spy who shoots people with those non-lethal bean bag things.

For some reason, though, I couldn't find a downloadable copy (these were my pirating days, folks—forgive me) back at my parents' house, so I asked my friend Nick (names have not been changed to protect those involved) to download it for me from his parents' PC. A few weeks later, I was sleeping over his house with a few friends and we'd just smoked some suburban weed in the guest house bathroom, getting ready to do something else with our time.
