The song debuted on the New Zealand Singles Chart at number one the day of its digital release, and remained on the chart for twenty-three weeks. "Hold Out" was also used as TV One's theme tune in the summer of 2006–07.
It arrived at Manila in September 1941. It was understood that a fleet consisting of more than PT boats would be required for a successful defense of the Philippines. As early as 1907, U.S. naval and military planners had concluded that it would be impractical to repel an invasion of the Philippines. The best that could be hoped for was that the garrison could hold out on the Bataan peninsula until help arrived. In the 1920s it was estimated that they could do so for about 60 days.

As originally conceived, it anticipated a blockade of the Philippines and other U.S. outposts in the Western Pacific. On November 25 the 119th was tasked with the liberation of Surovikino, relieving 1st Tank Corps, and then with a drive across the lower Chir. This town proved a tough nut to crack, and the German defenders were still holding out in the evening of November 27, when the division was joined by the 333rd Rifle. 24 hours later Surovikino continued to hold out. On the morning of the 30th the division penetrated into the town's northern outskirts, where it entered into street fighting with the defenders of composite Group Schmidt, while the 333rd carved out a bridgehead over the Chir to the east.

Early on 9 October German troops found some of the forts of the inner ring empty; Beseler had the bombardment stopped and summoned the Military Governor, General Deguise to surrender. As German made their way to Antwerp, four civilian representatives, including the Mayor of Antwerp Jan De Vos, reached Beseler at Kontich, to request an end to the bombardment of the city. During the afternoon, under threat of a resumption of the bombardment, the civilian representatives signed a capitulation of the city and such fortresses which continued to hold out. On the morning of 10 October, when the Chief of Staff of the Military Governor appeared with authority to discuss surrender, he was presented with a fait accompli and had to agree to the terms already accepted.

In addition to "I Could Never Miss You", Lulu featured two other songs from the 1978 album, being the title track, "Don't Take Love for Granted" and "You Are Still a Part of Me", all of which had been written by Neil Harrison. A new Harrison track, "Can't Hold Out on Love", was included, being one of seven new tracks produced by Mark London. Lulu reached No. 126 on the Billboard albums chart, making it Lulu's third US charting album—her first in eleven years—and her last to date.

This was the first time in athletics history that four teams had broken the 3-minute barrier in the same race and Australia placed 4th in a new national record of 2:59.70, which still stands in 2018. It is one second faster than the Australian that finished second in the 4 × 400 m relay final at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.
