But in its effort to reuse as much of a rocket as possible, SpaceX attempted to recover one-half of the rocket's payload fairing—a cone-like structure that protects satellites, equipment, food, and apparently Telsa Roadsters as they make their way to orbit and beyond.

SpaceX also attempted to land and recover all three boosters, and it'll also be trying to catch the fairing from the Falcon Heavy's cargo capsule using a barge positioned at sea that will attempt to navigate a net under it as it falls back to Earth.

Over this period, the spacecraft was attached to the payload adaptor of the Vega launcher, encapsulated within the half-shells of the rocket fairing, transferred to the launcher assembly area, and installed on top of Vega inside the mobile gantry, which was withdrawn shortly before liftoff.

The nosecone parts (each launch has two, one fairing for each half of the payload capsule) have been able to control their descent using small thrusters and a parachute that SpaceX can steer to a degree from the ground since the company's 2017 SES-10 mission.
|
|
SpaceX says it had a "soft landing" on the water, however, and it will be attempting to recover that half, too — though its purpose in using the ships is to avoid the much more difficult, costly and damaging process of fishing the fairing out of the ocean.
|
|
SpaceX's latest launch took place on Monday, and it was a success in just about every regard — except in terms of one of its secondary missions, which was an attempt to catch the two fairing halves that together cover the payload as the rocket ascends to space.
|
|
South Korea's navy retrieved what it believes to be a fairing used to protect the satellite on its journey into a space, a sign that it is looking for parts of the discarded rocket for clues into the North's rocket program, which it did following the previous launch.

And then, depending on its destination and how big the satellite is, the site will help you calculate the size of your payload fairing — the nose cone that encases the satellite on the top of the rocket — as well as how many additional boosters you're going to need for thrust.

Launching objects from Earth to space doesn't just carry a financial burden; escaping our gravity and atmosphere is not a gentle process, and there are limits to the fragility, shape and materials that can be used in payloads delivered to orbit on a rocket, even when covered by a protective fairing.
|
|
The two larger ones, at least one of which was labelled as a Sammad-3, did not appear to have surveillance payloads, but had bulges above the area where their wings join their fuselages, possibly to accommodate a larger explosives payload, as well as a fairing in front of their engines.

It later began attempting to recover it using a barge recovery ship to keep from having to fish it out of the sea, and managed to do that successfully for the first time with one half of the two-part fairing used in a Falcon Heavy launch this past June.

The Type 072, which was used, is more easily retrofitted with… …The third clue, a set of shipping containers mounted just aft of the gun; if it's anything like the railguns we've seen, there's a bunch of power and operational infrastructure that wouldn't fit inside that fairing, but would fit in a couple of containers.

Prior approaches to recovering the fairing used on SpaceX missions have had mixed success, and one key element was that previously the protective covering, which houses the rocket's payload and separates once the rocket clears the atmosphere, basically just landed in the ocean (as it ended up doing today) and SpaceX would attempt to pull it out.

The exact time of the launch has yet to be set, though SpaceX has set a two-hour window beginning at 8pm ET.Zuma's launch was delayed two months for what SpaceX called "fairing testing," referring to the part of its rockets that house the payload, and a few additional days after extreme weather hit the East Coast.

The boat was put into service during a SpaceX launch from Vandenberg for the first time in February 2017, but the fairing missed the net and the boat, and the same was true for three subsequent attempts in 2018, during which SpaceX also decked the boat out with larger nets to give it a better chance of success.
