"I began to write Batman comics, which was my dream since I was eight years old," Uslan recalls -- a wish-fulfillment that panicked him for "ten minutes" until he formulated his next dream, one that had been percolating since 1966 when the much-anticipated "Batman" TV series starring Adam West and Burt Ward debuted, shocking the young Uslan with its campy, tongue-in-cheek take on the hero he knew had dark, gothic roots.

How fascinating that these two shows, which offer such alternative responses to art history, were found just a few blocks apart, an occurrence that prompts thoughts of the realms contained within an encyclopedic collection like that of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where electric guitars and campy fashion can be found just a few steps away from Japanese scrolls and Northern Renaissance painting (to name just a few of the current exhibitions).

My point is this: I witnessed some of the weirdest shit I have even seen humans partake in and prescribe to—capes, tons of campy patches sewn everywhere, stupid lyrics and slogans printed insanely large on the backs of black t-shirts, fat dudes passed out everywhere only a couple hours after being at sea, and even a full on Stormtrooper with a vocal processor that sounded like he was talking on an intercom.

Usually, the lesson appeared in the form of a boyfriend whose disability — in one episode from 22010, Rose brings home her date, a little person, for dinner, and in the fourth and sixth seasons, Blanche dates both a man with a visual impairment and a wheelchair user, respectively — provided fodder for the kinds of predictable jokes, sight gags, and campy commedia routines that the show was known for, as well as a message about acceptance and diversity.
