In 1933 Cairns joined the Police Force in order to have more time for athletics. While working, he studied at night and completed an economics degree at the University of Melbourne.
Its standards were derived from a NAPFA study, in which the results were scientifically compiled and calibrated to fairly address the various physical fitness abilities of different age groups. Prior to 2015, the IPPT consisted of five stations: sit-up, standing broad jump, chin-up, 4 x 10 metres shuttle run and 2.4 kilometres run. On 1 April 2011, the Enhanced NS IPPT system for NSmen was implemented, incorporating principles of physical training science to enable servicemen to train more effectively and giving them greater flexibility in managing their training schedules. In late 2013, Singapore's Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) announced that it is considering implementing key changes to the IPPT system to put it in line with the fitness tests used in the Australian and United States armed forces.
In Singapore, pupils from primary school through junior colleges are required to have two hours of PE every week, except during examination periods. Pupils may play games like football, badminton, captain ball, and basketball during most sessions. Unorthodox sports such as fencing, and skateboarding are occasionally played. In more prestigious secondary schools and in junior colleges, sports such as golf, tennis, shooting, and squash are played An Biennial compulsory fitness exam, NAPFA, is conducted in every school to assess pupils' physical fitness in Singapore. This includes a series of fitness tests (pull-ups/inclined pull-ups for girls, standing broad jump, sit- ups, sit-and-reach and 1.6 km for primary [10- to 12-year-olds]/2.4 km for secondary and junior college levels [13- to 18-year-olds]).

He won a total of thirty Irish titles the last in 1956, as weight thrower, sprinter and long jumper (tying for the 1941 NACA senior long jump championship with international soccer and rugby player Kevin O'Flanagan (1919–2006). Prior to the NFL Combine, Burfict was ranked as the fifth best linebacker prospect in the draft by NFL analyst Mike Mayock. He attended the NFL Scouting Combine and performed the majority of drills, but skipped the short shuttle and three-cone drills after injuring his hamstring on his second 40-yard dash attempt. His overall performance was described as "disappointing" due to a 5.09 sec in the 40-yard dash, which was the slowest among all linebackers. Burfict also finished last among linebackers in the broad jump and finished second to last among linebackers in the vertical jump. On March 16, 2012, Burfict attended Arizona State’s pro day and performed the bench press (16 reps), vertical jump (30”), short shuttle (4.56s), and three-cone drill (7.51s). Burfict described his overall pro day performance as “average”.
Foster's subpar senior campaign caused his draft stock to plummet, as well as scouts' concerns about his below- average pass-blocking, issues with ball security, character issues (partly due to his earlier arrest) and the less-than-stellar reviews from Tennessee staff members that portrayed him as selfish and hard to coach. Foster ranked 24th among running backs available in the 2009 NFL Draft, according to Sports Illustrated. A pulled hamstring prevented Foster from working out at the NFL Scouting Combine, and he had a poor showing at Tennessee's Pro Day when he registered a 4.65 40-yard dash, 4.50 short shuttle, vertical leap and 9′7″ broad jump. The combination of factors led to Foster being undrafted at the 2009 NFL Draft; after several teams showed interest in him as a rookie free agent, he chose to sign a contract with the Houston Texans in May 2009 because he thought the situation suited him.
NAPFA involves a series of five stations and a 2.4-km (1.5-mile) Walk-Run for secondary school students or a 1.6-km (1-mile) Walk- Run for primary school students. All of the 5 station tests are attempted on the same day, with a 2-5 minute rest period permitted between stations. The Walk-Run item is usually attempted on a different day, although sometimes a 2-week window limit is set. The test items are: # Sit-ups: Maximum in one minute # Pull-ups (secondary schools)/Push-ups (ITE/Poly/JC/MI) (for males 15 years old and above) or Inclined Pull-ups (for females and males below 15 years old): Maximum in half-a-minute # Sit-and-Reach: Maximum distance # Shuttle Run: Minimum time for two laps of fixed distance # Standing Broad Jump: Maximum distance # 2.4-km Run (1.5-mile Run) [1.6-km Run (1-mile run) for primary schools]: Minimum time on firm and level surface Performances are then compared to a chart and the grades from A to F for each test item.
Taylor was one of Western Military Academy's top athletes, captaining the track and field team; he also played football and basketball. While the long jump (then usually called the "broad jump") was already his best event, he competed in and won other events for his team, including the sprints, high jump and pole vault. His best jump in 1949 of 22 ft in (6.79 m) ranked him among the top Illinois high schoolers that year, although it was nowhere close to the national leader, George Brown, who had jumped 25 ft in (7.68 m) to break Jesse Owens's national high school record from 1933. Taylor graduated from high school in 1949 and went to Princeton University on a scholarship. He played defensive back for a Princeton Tigers football team that went 26–1 over three seasons. In 1952, his junior year at Princeton, Taylor reached the international top level as a long jumper. In early May he jumped 25 ft in (7.68 m) in a dual meet against Yale, a new meeting record and Princeton school record. Four weeks later he won the IC4A long jump championship, defeating the previous year's winner, Cornell's Meredith Gourdine.
Due to a shoulder injury, he appeared only briefly as a backup to kick for extra points in the final two games of the season, but he still led the Wolverines in passing, punt returns, and scoring. During the 1943–1944 academic year, Hirsch also won varsity letters in basketball (as a center), track (as a broad jumper), and baseball (as a pitcher), becoming the first Michigan athlete to letter in four sports in a single year. He averaged 7.3 points per game for the 1943–44 Michigan Wolverines men's basketball team, compiled a 6-0 record as a pitcher for the Michigan baseball team, placed third in the long jump in the 1944 indoor championship, and led all three teams to Big Ten Conference championships. On May 13, 1944, Hirsch starred in two sports in the same day, winning the broad jump with a distance of 24 feet, 2-1/4 inches at a track meet in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and then traveling to Columbus, Ohio, where he pitched a one-hitter to give Michigan's baseball team a 5-0 victory over Ohio State.
National Service (NS) is the national policy in Singapore mandated by statutory law that requires all male Singaporean citizens and second- generation permanent residents to serve a period of compulsory service in the uniformed services. It was first instituted in 1967 to help build Singapore's military forces soon after its independence, and has since been expanded to involve the police and civil defence force as well. Upon enlistment, male Singaporean citizens and second-generation permanent residents serve for 2 years in active duty as full-time national servicemen (NSFs) in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), Singapore Police Force (SPF) or Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), following which they transition to an operationally-ready reservist state as operationally-ready national servicemen (NSmen).
