In one of his most detailed pronouncements about history, religion and the state, a speech in Montpellier last October, he waxed eloquent on the subject of Protestant-Catholic warfare half a millennium ago: France was given up to fire and bloodshed, she experienced famine, she experienced the worst of things, she was nearly chopped up in pieces forever because of the decision…to exclude, to brand one party as guilty and annihilate them... The "excluded" party to which he referred were the Protestants.

On Saturday, at a presentation staged by Tod's at the historic Villa Necchi Campiglio, the designer Andrea Incontri updated his continuing project of creating apparel that fits plausibly into a business built on footwear with what he called a "utility wardrobe" organized around a down-stuffed waxed leather "Pash" jacket and — perhaps more interesting — a group of handsome bomber, field, peacoat, caban and Montgomery jackets in leather laser-etched in a way that lent them some resemblance to Ms. Prada's corduroys.

I am not advocating against cultural specificity, and have taken into account the pragmatics of such curatorial practices (buoyed usually by private money in the designated regions), but it is harder and harder to look at these snow-globed, bikini-waxed samplings of the contemporary art "of" or "from" a particular region (usually a non-Western one, crudely speaking), especially when some kind of social or political urgency is evoked, as if their reality isn't steadily bleeding into ours while ours oozes right back.

From the souvenir shop on the ground floor, with its wooden cases of shells, toy boats and leering papier-mâché masks sold for Ostend's springtime carnival, to the stuffy parlors with vases of feathers, elaborately patterned wall-to-wall Brussels carpeting, damask curtains and bric-a-brac everywhere, it's a stifling terrarium-like place where it's easy to imagine Ensor in his waistcoat and waxed mustache playing his harmonium in front of one of his best-known works, "The Entry of Christ in Brussels," today hanging at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
