Some researchers and public health experts have already embraced vaping as a way to wean people off of smoking, arguing that even if it's not completely harmless, it's much better than traditional smoking (though vape products could potentially be a gateway into actual smoking for some teens).
"We've known for a while that the more you see smoking on screen, the more likely you are to see youth smoking cigarettes in real life," said Michael Tynan, lead author of the report and a public health analyst at the CDC's Office on Smoking and Health.

Although the benefits of not smoking are calculated to offset damage from the increased risk of obesity, the obesity tide is eroding some of the gains in life expectancy from reduced smoking.
Japan lags many countries in efforts to fight smoking, with attempts to tackle tobacco often stymied by pro-smoking politicians, restaurateurs and Japan Tobacco, which is one-third owned by the government.
This was true after researchers adjusted for a variety of other factors that could influence fitness, such as age, weight, diet, physical activity, smoking behavior, maternal health and smoking and household income.
The bills, which are designed to curb teen smoking and include raising the legal smoking age to 21, have lumped in the use of vaping devices, to the chagrin of the industry.
And a lot of the hand-wringing about this report on smoking heroin flies in the face of years of harm reduction research which suggests that smoking is less risky than injecting.
"After trying to figure out a way to quit smoking for so long, and finally seeing success with vaping, there is no way I go back to smoking," one Redditor told me.
That is despite the fact that smoking marijuana for fun is legal in Alaska, Colorado, Oregon and Washington, and smoking it for certain medicinal purposes is legal in nearly half the country.
