Visionary politicians and scholars appear in a wash of blue, representing what the artist calls the "nurturing spirit" of Yemaya, the goddess of the ocean; women of the arts float in yellow, for the goddess Oshun, who is "sensuous, of the world, a physical spirit"; and activists are set against a fiery red, the color of Oya, a warrior spirit.

She has a zest for bold assertions, and some of them land: Her attention to the physical intimacy between Creole women and their black servants, the domestic eroticism of "gospel mothers," the sensuous intimacy of soft rock, and the puritan sexual disgust of punk are all useful diversifications from the bawdy journey through national puberty that is the book's primary narrative.

That changes only toward the end, with the dawn of an era in which such newcomers as the post-minimalist sculptors Eva Hesse and Lynda Benglis could at once pioneer important developments in art and invest them with peculiarly sensuous qualities that are not about what the female body is like—the fascination of male artists, for millennia—but about what it's like to have one.

Raising three daughters in Delhi, she was well situated to observe Indian society post-independence, with its Westernizing, marriage-minded middle class — and, at the same time, to apply her well-developed irony to the many European seekers of the 1960s she encountered, people for whom India was a semi-mythical destination, a warm, sensuous alternative to their own lumpen postwar continent, as it was for Jhabvala herself for a time.
