The modern history of PUO begins with the appointment of the orchestra's present Music Director, Michael J. Pratt, in 1977. Published in 1974, Western Attitudes Toward Death from the Middle Ages to the Present was French historian Philippe Ariès's first major publication on the subject of death. Ariès was well known for his work as a medievalist and a historian of the family, but the history of death was the subject of his work in his last decade of scholarly life. Ariès wrote several major books and articles on death mentalities and is credited with introducing death as a topic for historical inquiry. Western Attitudes Toward Death began as a series of lectures presented to Johns Hopkins University, which he gave for the express purpose of translation and publication.

Humira Saqib (born 1980) is an Afghan journalist and women's human rights activist. She is one of the leading activists who through her writings in the magazine Negah-e-Zan (A Vision of Women) and in Afghan Women's News Agency, has been protesting against extreme forms of harassment against women in her radically Islamic country. She pleads that the parliament should enact laws for "Elimination of Violence against Women and enforce it vigorously.... Education, is also a key to changing mentalities around women's roles in society." She is now pursuing her efforts to further women's rights by working for the women's news agency as a writer and editor.

Since the magazine never intended to purchase Curry's painting there has been little success finding documentation regarding the financial aspects of the commission. Curry's Hoover and the Flood was created to celebrate the humanitarian and relief efforts of Secretary of Commerce Herbert Hoover before his presidential election in 1928. Curry's painting demonstrates many of the major scenes and events that were associated during the Mississippi Flood of 1927 such as flood waters, National Guardsmen, the Red Cross relief, refugees, stranded farm animals, praying African Americans and a Mississippi riverboat. John Steuart Curry's work often supported the mentalities of the African American population that were common during the first half of the twentieth century.

Darnton concerns himself greatly with the ways in which people viewed the world around them. He interprets the symbolic significance of journeymen printers massacring neighborhood cats as a display of frustration with the growing bourgeoisie class. One of the soldiers witnessing his execution was an intellectually curious, noble teenager named Antonio Nariño, who was deeply impressed by both the insurrection and the execution. Nariño went on to become a politician in Santafé, and he became acquainted with the liberal ideas in vogue in Europe. In a subsequent collection of studies on the idiosyncratic hermit pope Celestine V, Frugoni used contemporary descriptions and discussions of Celestine to illuminate the theological and political controversies surrounding the papacy in the late thirteenth century. To analyse government is to analyse those mechanisms that try to shape, sculpt, mobilise and work through the choices, desires, aspirations, needs, wants and lifestyles of individuals and groups [Dean, 1999:12]. Dean's main contribution to the definition of the term, however, comes from the way he breaks the term up into 'govern' 'mentality', or mentalities of governing—mentality being a mental disposition or outlook. This means that the concept of governmentality is not just a tool for thinking about government and governing but also incorporates how and what people who are governed think about the way they are governed. He defines thinking as a "collective activity" [1999:16], that is, the sum of the knowledge, beliefs and opinions held by those who are governed.

Approval of interracial marriage has slowly increased in Trinidad and Tobago and one Chinese man reported that his Indian wife did not encounter any rejection from his parents when asked in a survey. In Trinidad, Europeans and Chinese are seen as acceptable marriage partners by Indians, while marrying black men would lead to rejection of their daughters by Indian families. According to the Douglas' consciousness, there were twice as many Indian men with black women than black men with Indian women, the statistics for Chinese men are not clear since the majority of Indians were from honour killing prevalent states whereas the Tamil labourer families had more open mentalities. Some Indo-Trinidadian and Tobagonians can trace their ancestry to indentured labourers who immigrated to Guyana, Jamaica, St. Vincent, Grenada, or other islands in the Caribbean.

The Association of LGBTI Journalists (which became the LGBTI journalists’ association ) was founded in May 2013 shortly after the Marriage Equality Bill (known as Mariage pour Tous) was passed in France. Its founding members were shocked by the careless manner in which the media platformed the homophobic arguments of the bill's opponents. These journalists regretted that « the space given to the opponents and their hate speech had been justified by the need to give a « balanced treatment » of this issue ». The creation of the AJL was marked by the publication of a collective article for an LGBT journalists’ association published in the daily newspaper Libération on the 16th of May 2013. « Through its scrutiny of the « Fourth Estate », the association probably hopes to contribute to the change in mentalities », later wrote the news weekly L'Express.

It was visibly Czech-biased; moreover, Slovak nationalists were dismissed as Magyarones, traitors supportive of Magyarization,Bakke 1999, p. 313 a reference to 19th century theory which opposed buildup of Slovak language as an attempt first to separate Slovaks from Czechs and then to turn them into Hungarians.

Modern Information and Communication Technology (ICT) offers today the opportunity to explore and to promote a new dimension in the engineering activity: the collaborative work of team-partners residing at different locations and working at different time using the Internet as common working and communication platform. Collaboration in this environment demands for new skills and a new 'technological culture' to be generated just by doing. This is a challenge for the European dimension where in future experts and engineers from different countries with different languages, different mentalities as well as different specialization and professional experience have to collaborate in research, teaching and practice. Training of collaborating in such new environment is the challenge of this project which by collaboration of the seven HydroEurope partners will help to establish common high quality university teaching courses and establish links between students from the involved countries.

On her return to France, she started to prepare her doctorate in modern history on Le vol d'aliment à Paris au XVIIIe siècle (The Theft of Food in Paris in the 18th century), defended in 1974 under the supervision of Robert Mandrou, a pupil of Lucien Febvre, and the pioneer of the history of mentalities. She then specialised in the study of the poorest communities of the capital. In 2016 she was awarded the Dan David Prize. With her research team from the "groupe d'histoire des femmes" (women's history group), she next worked on the themes of popular identity, gender relations and historical narrative in the 18th century. After having co-hosted the show Les Lundis de l’histoire (History Mondays) on France Culture, she regularly collaborates on La Fabrique de l’Histoire (The History Factory), a broadcast from the same radio station.

Graus made important contributions to several areas of medieval history which in the 1960s and 70's did not yet receive a great deal of attention from most scholars in the West German historical academy. Graus's Czech doctoral thesis, published in 1965 as Volk, Herrscher und Heiliger im Reich der Merowinger (People, Ruler and Saint in the Merovingian Kingdom) was a groundbreaking study of how the early medieval hagiographic texts – dismissed by most historians then as pious fictions with little or no historical value – contained important insights on popular religious sentiments and social mentalities. His later work attempted to draw broad connections among diverse social phenomena, such as anti-Semitism, urban poverty, and religious fanaticism. Graus's methodologies and historical views were certainly informed by Marxism, though his conclusions and interpretations were not always Marxist in a doctrinaire way.

At a national level, siege mentalities existed in Soviet Union, Communist Albania, Rhodesia, Apartheid South Africa, Northern Ireland, as a result of ideological isolation; while a similar mentality is currently to be seen in North Korea, Russia, United States, West Bank, Israel, Taiwan, and Venezuela where it is arguably encouraged by both the government—to help justify their continuance in power—and the opposition—to help justify their overthrowing the government through violent means. Sociologically, the term may refer to persecution feelings by anyone in a group that views itself as a threatened minority, as with the early psychoanalysts.A. Samuels, The Father (1985) p. 8 This can be used for example in the field of sports, where coaches or managers often create a siege mentality in their players by highlighting an environment of hostility from outside the club (whether the hostility is real or exaggerated is irrelevant).

But it had not been enough to simply acknowledge the mistakes made by the nation in the past, rather since their dissolution in 1968 Cuba has made significant strides in supporting it's homosexual and youth communities. Through the use of sex education campaigns and the empowerment of gay communities through their open visibility, Cuba was able to turnover it's inherited "macho" conceptions. With the homosexual community taking a paramount role in the proliferation of art and culture during the 70s and 80s through the support of the government, with some even taking prominent roles as leaders in large aspects of communist governance, championed as evidence of revolutionary non-discrimination. The sex education campaign brought an understanding of sexuality to the forefront of schooling, building in an acceptance of sexualities and effectively cutting off colonialist mentalities by educating the population into a different cultural paradigm.

Kuehnelt-Leddihn believed that Americans misunderstood much of Central European culture such as the Austro- Hungarian Empire, which Kuehnelt-Leddihn claimed as one of the contributing factors to the rise of Nazism. He also highlighted characteristics of the German society and culture (especially the influences of both Protestant and Catholic mentalities) and attempted to explain the sociological undercurrents of Nazism. Thus, he concludes that sound Catholicism, sound Protestantism, or even, probably, sound popular sovereignty (German-Austrian unification in 1919) all three would have prevented National Socialism although Kuehnelt- Leddihn rather dislikes the latter two. Contrary to the prevailing view that the Nazi Party was a radical right-wing movement with only superficial and minimal leftist elements, Kuehnelt-Leddihn asserted that Nazism (National Socialism) was a strongly leftist, democratic movement ultimately rooted in the French Revolution that unleashed forces of egalitarianism, conformity, materialism and centralization.

Lithuanian pagan customs included ritualistic human sacrifice, the hanging of widows, and the burying of a warrior's horses and servants with him after his death. The Knights would also, on occasion, take captives from defeated Lithuanians, whose condition (as that of other war captives in the Middle Ages) was extensively researched by Jacques Heers. The conflict had much influence in the political situation of the region, and was the source of many rivalries between Lithuanians or Poles and Germans, the degree to which it impacted the mentalities of the time can be seen in the lyrical works of men such as the contemporary Austrian poet Peter Suchenwirt. The conflict in its entirety lasted over 200 years (although with varying degrees of aggression during that time), with its front line along both banks of the Neman River, with as many as twenty forts and castles between Seredžius and Jurbarkas alone.

Kocka (1988) and Sheri Berman are historians who emphasise the central importance of a German Sonderweg ("special path") or "exceptionalism" as the root of Nazism and the German catastrophe in the 20th century. Fritz Fischer and his students emphasised Germany’s primary guilt for causing World War I. Hans-Ulrich Wehler, a leader of the Bielefeld School of social history, places the origins of Germany's path to disaster in the 1860s-1870s, when economic modernisation took place, but political modernisation did not happen and the old Prussian rural elite remained in firm control of the army, diplomacy and the civil service. Traditional, aristocratic, premodern society battled an emerging capitalist, bourgeois, modernising society. Recognising the importance of modernising forces in industry and the economy and in the cultural realm, Wehler argues that reactionary traditionalism dominated the political hierarchy of power in Germany, as well as social mentalities and in class relations (Klassenhabitus).

Serbian rock critic Petar Peca Popović made the following comment in his Džuboks review of the album: :Đorđe Balašević was and still remains a masterful poet with a simply unbelievable gift for conjuring all the diversity of Vojvodina's clashes of culture, mentalities, customs and characters in a way that does not offend anybody, yet leaves nobody indifferent. Cesereanu dedicated part of her work to researching the impact of communist-organized state persecution, and to the historical investigation of political imprisonments during the 1950s and 60s, as set in place by the communist secret police, the Securitate. Dan C. Mihăilescu, who referred to Cesereanu as one in a "Cluj-Napocan, Transylvanian 'trident' " of essayists, alongside Marta Petreu and Ştefan Borbély, indicated she was "one of the most industrious literary historians, analysts of mentalities, of the ethno-psychologies etc." Speaking in 2004, she noted that her contributions in the study of what she calls "the Romanian Gulag" aimed to provide material for a "trial of communism" in Romania. Paul Cernat argues that there may be a subtle connection between Cesereanu's fiction and her historical studies, indicating that the "archeology of nocturnal phantasms", a common theme in Cesereanu's poetry, may share focus with her interest in " 'domesticating' a savage imagination" Romanians have developed around the issue of communist terror.

If previous Romanian novels with similar themes (those of Ioan Slavici and Liviu Rebreanu) were centered on dramas involving acquiring plots, Moromeţii shifted focus on preserving ownership of the land. The example of Ilie Moromete, who sees his peasant mentalities and way of life (reliance on land ownership and family), traces the destiny of his social category between not long after the land reform to what has later been deemed "the obsessive decade" of the 1950s; Moromete and his peasant dignity are crushed by deep changes brought about by capitalism, industrialization, and finally communism. A minute and complex picture of the Romanian countryside life during the period, Moromeţii distinguished itself by the characters' depth and inner strength—especially those of the main hero, a contemplative archetype of "man- living-of-land-labor". Preda heavily relies on the use of his characters' use of language (comprising their particular humor, reflexion, and subtle meditation on deep questions of existence).

Jean Léon Marie Delumeau was born in Nantes on 18 June 1923 and obtained his early education in several Catholic boarding schools. In 1943 he entered the École Normale Supérieure, and he later studied at the École Française de Rome, where Fernand Braudel was one of his mentors, and he taught history at École Polytechnique, University of Rennes 2, and University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne.. He was director of the Armorican Center for Historical Research (1964–1970), director of studies at the École pratique des hautes études (1963–1975) and at School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (1975–1978), and professor emeritus at the Collège de France, where he occupied the chair of "History of Religious Mentalities in the Modern Western World" (1975–1994). He was a member of the editorial board of several academic journals and a visiting professor at several universities in North America, Europe and Asia, and was also an honorary member of the Institut Universitaire de France and the Academia Europaea.. On 26 February 1988, Delumeau was elected a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles- Lettres in the chair of Georges Dumézil. He was given his épée d'académicien on 27 September 1989 by .
