Known as "King Carl" and "The Meal Ticket", Hubbell gained fame in the first two innings of the 1934 All-Star Game (played at the Polo Grounds) by striking out five future AL Hall of Famers in a row: Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons and Joe Cronin. Ott succeeded Terry as manager in 1942, but the war years proved to be difficult for the Giants.

Carl Hubbell, American baseball player and Hall of Famer, was raised in Meeker. Hubbell was born in the rural community of Red Oak, near Carthage, Missouri, and moved to Meeker at the age of four. Nicknamed "King Carl" by the fans and "The Meal Ticket" by his teammates, Hubbell's first major-league victory was a 4-0 shutout of the Philadelphia Phillies. Making a late entry to the majors at age 25, Hubbell would go 10-6 in his first season, and would pitch his entire 16-year major league career for the New York Giants. With a slow delivery of his devastating screwball, Hubbell recorded five consecutive 20-win seasons for the Giants (1933–37), and helped his team to three NL pennants and the 1933 World Series title.

In the hallways, he is often seen chatting with cheerleaders and is usually surrounded by friends and fellow Panthers players. Under his happy-go-lucky and sometimes brash exterior, Smash is a loyal and caring individual who tries hard to please everyone, particularly Coach Taylor, his (ex) girlfriend Waverly and mother Corinna. In season 1, he is repeatedly worried about his mother and his future, once describing himself as the family's "meal ticket" and often reminding his mother of his promise to buy her a house after playing college football and eventually going pro. Unfortunately, his desire to go into professional football as a way out of poverty leads to his using performance-enhancing drugs and he found himself in a moral dilemma before his guilty conscience and Corinna's discovery of the drugs forces him to confess to it.

Led by Ralph (Billy West), the sentient, tune-savvy insects scare away the thugs in an act of enlightened self-interest that endears them to their human meal ticket. Tired of living on handouts from mom back in Iowa and after a series of dead-end jobs ruined by his well-intentioned six-legged roomies, Joe finds himself the unskilled drummer in Walter Shit's band. Hanging posters for SHIT, he encounters Senator Dougherty's daughter Lily (Megan Ward) promoting her own project, a community garden to occupy the vacant site surrounding Joe's building. A gift to Lily while working on her garden is enough to woo her back to Joe's apartment, where the cockroaches break a promise to keep out of his business and a panicked Lily flees, only to discover the garden she'd worked on has been burned to the ground.
