Restaurant owners and other merchants were accorded more availability, but had to collect ration stamps to restock their supplies. In late 1941, Tammens became a teacher at a BLO school, special education for boys with learning difficulties. She found refuge for a Jewish boy from her school and his brother at a farm, which marked her first act of resistance. Her activities increased, and soon her house was used as a temporary shelter for refugees, and storage for stolen ration stamp and arms. In the summer of 1943, her house became the meeting place for the Groninger Top, the heads of the provincial resistance group.

The timing of the product's launch had much to do with its success: during World War II, rationing of milk and dairy products, an increased reliance on meatless meals, and more women working outside the home, created a nearly captive market for the product, which was considered a hearty meal for families. Its shelf life of ten months was attractive at a time when many Canadian homes did not have refrigerators. Also, consumers could receive, for one food ration stamp, two boxes. The original box was primarily yellow.

Ration stamps were widely used during World War II by both sides after hostilities caused interruption to the normal supply of goods. They were also used after the end of the war while the economies of the belligerents gradually returned to normal. Ration stamps were also used to help maintain the amount of food one could hold at a time.
