The ice sheet itself is color-coded according to "concentration anomaly," cooler colors indicate lower than average ice coverage, while warmer colors indicate higher than average.
In 1961—the year before he became the anchorman for CBS News—Walter Cronkite visited Camp Century, an unusual military compound on the Greenland ice sheet.

We already know that meltwater ponds can accelerate ice sheet collapse, by placing additional strain on the ice, or seeping deep into cracks and causing them to expand.

Officials say hydro plants that could draw directly from the ice sheet could power a proposed new aluminum smelter and iron ore mines such as for iron ore.
We've been trying to figure out for a long time what's going on with this ice sheet, and the latest science is suggesting it could go fairly quickly.
If the entire Greenland ice sheet were to melt — granted, this would take place over centuries — that would cause a 23-foot rise in sea level, on average.
However, the ice sheet -- a major contributor to a rise in global sea levels -- continued to lose mass in 2017, as it has since measurements began in 2002.

Fires in Alaska and Siberia also deposited soot on Greenland's ice sheet, which darkened the surface and caused it to absorb more heat, which leads to faster melting.
On August 1, Greenland's ice sheet lost 12.5 billion tons of ice — more than any day since researchers started recording ice loss in 1950, The Washington Post reported.
"Somewhere between 1.5 and 2 degrees, there's a tipping point after which it will no longer be possible to maintain the Greenland Ice Sheet," told Inside Climate News.
The Antarctic ice sheet is about one and a half times the size of the continental United States, and it's more than 9,000 feet thick at the pole.
The mission known as GRACE (short for Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) has allowed scientists to detect trends in ice sheet thickness, surface water depth, and groundwater depletion.
Another study found Greenland's entire ice sheet is melting at its fastest rate in at least 400 years, and that the melt rate sped up drastically in 1990.
"What we're showing in our paper is [the AMOC] will weaken further as the ice sheet melt from Greenland continues to pour into the North Atlantic," he said.
Ice sheet and glacier melting are significant contributors to the rising water level, according to the study, as is "thermal expansion" where warming waters caused oceans to expand.
Melting this early in the season generally does not contribute to sea level rise immediately, as most of the water remains near the surface of the ice sheet.
The Greenland ice sheet had a record-setting day on June 12 when melting was seen on more than 45 percent of its surface — about 275,000 square miles.
The bowl of the crater presses right against the edge of the glacier, giving the wandering ice sheet a semi-circle-like appearance that is visible from above.
He was even more terrified when he swam below the Antarctic ice sheet, through melting tunnels -- though he said it was the most beautiful swim he's ever done.
The amount of ice loss from the West Antarctic Ice Sheet has accelerated, increasing by 70% in the past decade, according to research published in the journal Science.

According to the NWMO, the Greenland ice sheet is comparable to the kinds of ice sheets that could cover both Canada and Scandinavia again in the far future.
Air parcels rolling over the ice sheet used to arrive in the summer from the North, bringing in cold arctic air and keeping the melt rate in check.

Scientists also often focus on regions of extreme vulnerability, such as Bangladesh or the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, which for most Americans are very remote, both physically and psychically.
A few degrees of warming may cause tremendous amounts of ice—particularly in the West Antarctic Ice Sheet—to fall and melt into the sea over centuries to come.
He has published research for the past 25 years on Arctic climate change and the use of regional climate models and remote sensing to monitor the Greenland ice sheet.

The Arctic spring thaw has begun with a bang, with extensive melting of the Greenland ice sheet and sea ice loss that is already several weeks ahead of normal.
The first drone images I made were on a trip to Greenland's ice sheet, where I captured images of a meltwater river flowing across the top of the ice.
The University of Washington team plans to focus on Pine Island Glacier in West Antarctica, the continent's fastest-melting ice sheet, where a huge iceberg broke off last year.
People attracted to the Greenland ice sheet tend to be the type to sail up fjords or to fly single-engine planes, which is to say they enjoy danger.

"The amount of ice lost annually from the Antarctic ice sheet increased at least six-fold between 1979 and 2017," Nullis added, citing images showing cracks in glaciers in Antarctica.
Melting from Greenland's ice sheet is also likely contributing to colder sea temperatures south of the island, and could have dramatic impacts on ocean circulation and even inhibit hurricane production.
It had sat buried in Greenland's ice sheet since September 2017 when one of four engines on Air France flight 2323 abruptly disintegrated en route from Paris to Los Angeles.
Recent studies suggest that parts of this icy fortress—particularly the West Antarctic ice sheet—could be far more sensitive to a few degrees of warming than we had hoped.
And, of course, I hoped to see the Arctic ice sheet, the frozen top of the planet that I had dreamt of setting foot on since I was a child.

Camp Century was one of these facilities, and it was used to test the feasibility of basing nuclear missiles within the ice sheet to help deter the then-Soviet Union.
The near vertical line on June 28500 was due to the rapid expansion of melt following the incursion of warm, humid air from the Atlantic Ocean over the ice sheet.
But after the first tunnels were built, the military discovered that the ice sheet was not as stable as it needed to be: It moved and shifted, destabilizing the tunnels.
He urged his colleagues to consider what would happen as a warming climate attacked huge shelves of floating ice that help to protect and buttress the West Antarctic ice sheet.
Researchers had long assumed the worst effects of global warming on the great ice sheet (which is larger than Mexico) would take hundreds — if not thousands — of years to occur.
And if the West Antarctic ice sheet continues to melt, sea levels around the world could rise as much as 12 feet, or enough to wipe out entire coastal cities.
Professor Bentley made more than 15 trips to the Antarctic, the last in 2009, mapping the structure and physical properties of the ice sheet and probing the continent beneath it.

"An anticyclone over Greenland favours advection of warm air masses along its west side but also sunny and dry conditions over the ice sheet," Fettweis told Motherboard in an email.
Arctic ice melting matters because, as Brad Plumer wrote for Vox, Right next door to all that Arctic sea ice is the massive ice sheet sitting atop land in Greenland.
Meanwhile, in some places, like the eastern Arctic, which is close to the Greenland ice sheet, the sea level could actually drop a bit in years to come, according to Han.
Jason Box, a climate scientist who researches the Greenland ice melt, says the timing of these melt events is critical because they affect the reflectiveness, or albedo, of the ice sheet.
It&aposs well understood that the West Antarctic Ice Sheet lies on top of a large or major volcanic rift system, but there has been no current magmatic activity, Loose noted.
And while most of Greenland's ice is on land above sea level, large parts of the Western Antarctic ice sheet are below sea level, making them more vulnerable to warming oceans.
We now know that if the Antarctic ice sheet does melt, it could trigger a catastrophic spike in sea levels that would inundate major US cities like New York and Miami.
This site had been rejected in the past as a candidate for continuous ice cores, because the base of the ice sheet—where it meets the bedrock—appeared to be disturbed.
Its expansive ice sheet measures 1.5 miles (2.5 km) thick on average, and its outer edges go really deep—about 2.2 miles (3.5 km) below Pluto's "sea level," or mean elevation.
