As the Culver Studios grew in size and stature, a 28.5 acre backlot was used to build full-scale outdoor sets. The Back Forty, also known as Forty Acres, sat on a triangular plot of land a few blocks from the main lot. It was initially leased from landowner Harry Culver during Cecil B. DeMille's tenure and was continuously used to build the plantation Tara, the Atlanta Depot and other Atlanta buildings in Gone With the Wind (1939). RKO Forty Acres was a film studio backlot owned by RKO Pictures and later Desilu Productions, in Culver City, California. Best known as Forty Acres and "the back forty","Back 40" is a term used colloquially in America to describe a parcel of land, specifically, forty acres (16.2 ha) or one sixteenth of a section, constituting the smallest unit of agricultural land commonly surveyed ("back 40", "front 40"); "back 40" also refers to an undeveloped plot of land (as on a farm, ranch, etc.) of unspecified size. The "Back Forty" project was launched in mid-2013/early 2014 and is a collaboration between Johnson, Kenny Anderson and Chris Roberts—Johnson asserted in a March 2014 interview that, while the project sells products, it is not a "company." On the "About" section of the Back Forty's Facebook page, the project is self-defined as a commitment to: "Becoming the voice for what skateboarding has to say for itself." Johnson further explained: "We have tons of ideas that don't belong anywhere else ... Back Forty's a home for all the ideas that we have that don't really vibe with anything else that we're involved in." Johnson appeared on episode #36 of The Nine Club hosted by Chris Roberts.

While technically unrelated to The Back Forty, The Nine Club podcast shows a clear vision of furthering the missions of the latter project and generating skateboarding culture, history, and business content by and for skateboarders. Forbidden Zone has been criticized for its uses of blackface. In a 2018 article on Dread Central addressing the topic, Elfman stated his initial intentions of making Forbidden Zone "simply an expression of wild, balls-out absurdity" and "unabashedly politically incorrect, with something to offend everyone", but ultimately regretted the use of blackface, saying: > From today's perspective, if I could go back forty years, I certainly > wouldn't have included the brief blackface bits in Forbidden Zone.
