While asking Don's new secretary, Lois, where Don is, Peggy, Don's old secretary and now copywriter, upbraids and humiliates Lois. Meanwhile, the other people in the office wonder why Peggy left work for three months and returned after having lost a great deal of weight. One rumor is a fat farm, another is that Peggy was "knocked up" by Don and delivered his child.

Dermot and the wizard battle each other, and the wizard jumps into the well, leaving Dermot behind.

Moira walks in as Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) tells Liz to forget her appointment, as Liz had forgotten to check Leanne in, an hour after her arrival - Moira is cross. Moira upbraids Liz for her smoking breaks.

Johnny walks to a residential neighborhood and sits outside one of the houses. The house belongs to Ronda's sister Cara (Patrica Neal), and when Cara's teenage daughter Celia (Tessa Dahl) comes outside to fetch the morning newspaper, she sees Johnny and smiles. Noticing her daughter's interest in the young stranger, the cantankerous Cara upbraids Celia, then turns her anger on her son Porgie (Roy Applegate), and later abuses Porgie's wife Yolanda (Gale Garnett), whom Cara considers a tramp. As Johnny walks down the road, Roy (Simon Oakland), the town's police chief, pulls him over and takes him to the police station for questioning.

Our narrator Jimmy Corcoran spots Ukridge helping an attractive young girl onto a bus; intrigued, he finds the girl is one Dora Mason, secretary to Ukridge's Aunt Julia, a novelist. Later, having won some money on the Derby, Corcoran promises his friends a night out, but returning home to dress, he finds Bowles has let Ukridge borrow his evening suit. Dismayed, Corcoran must in turn borrow an ancient outfit from Bowles, which in addition to being rather snug, smells rather strongly of moth-balls, rendering his evening less than pleasant. Seeing Ukridge enjoying himself in his fine clothes, Corcoran upbraids him strongly, but hears that Ukridge is entertaining the pretty Dora.

Nathaniel has just seduced and abandoned Phyllis; when she upbraids him for his conduct to her, he tells her to turn whore. Nathaniel and his friends Vincent and Edmund are delighted to learn that Quicksands has married the beautiful young Millicent; they optimistically expect opportunities to cuckold the old moneylender. In the fight, Nathaniel is slightly wounded; Vincent and Edmund draw in his defence, so that Theophilus faces three-to-one odds.

Although Chremes approves of the match now between Clinia and Antiphila, because of his financial woe the dowry he can offer is too small. He asks Menedemus to help save his son by pretending that he, Chremes, is giving away all his estate to make a sufficient dowry. Clitipho is distraught when he hears this news, but his father tells him he would rather have his estate be thus disposed of than go to Bacchis by way of his heir. Menedemus upbraids Chremes for treating his son too harshly and Chremes relents, but on the condition that Clitipho give up Bacchis and take a different wife.

The Mother Superior, who accompanied him, notices Maria among the people in the train. The two men come to blows and fight until dusk, when the wizard dives into the well. Dermot kills and eats a deer that evening, and when he awakes the next morning, the Dermot finds the wizard waiting for him; he upbraids Dermot for eating his deer, then the same episode from the previous day occurs (fighting until dusk when the wizard disappears into the well).

As described in a film magazine, Betty Lawson (Ferguson), just in Arizona from New York City, takes pity on Les Artwell (Rollens), suspected of horse stealing, and upbraids 'Steel' Brannon (Jones), foreman of the Triangle L ranch, for dragging the fugitive from his saddle. Later, however, she learns that Artwell is a member of a gang of cattle thieves that is led by 'Satan' Latimer (Flynn). A raid is made on the cattle stock of the Triangle L and Steel is badly wounded in the clash between the ranch men and the outlaws. Betty assists Steel to Les's cabin but there is detained by Satan Latimer, who takes her to a cave in the mountains.

Joxer (who was present for both incidents, and did nothing to help) needles Jack about rumours that the inheritance is not forthcoming; this soon devolves into an argument during which Joxer openly mocks Jack's fortune as fraudulent. While Johnny upbraids his father for embarrassing the family, Juno returns alone and delivers the news of Mary's pregnancy. As Juno pleads with Jack to use the leftover money from the inheritance to move the family to a different city, he angrily reveals that they will receive nothing due to an error Bentham made while drafting the will (he failed to include the beneficiaries' names, referring to Jack only as "[my] first cousin"). As a result, numerous relations are claiming the inheritance, which is rapidly being eaten up by legal costs; to make matters worse, Bentham has apparently fled the country out of shame.

Wenrich is the author of an able controversial treatise on behalf of Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV during his struggle with Pope Gregory VII (the Conflict of Investitures). It was probably written in the summer of 1081, at the urgency of Bishop Dietrich of Verdun, to whom it has also been ascribed. The form is that of an open letter to the pope; the tone is friendly, as though what he had to say was painful to the author. Wenrich disputes the efficiency of the emperor's excommunication (1080), opposes the laws of celibacy promulgated by the pope, condemns the inciting of the people against the emperor, defends investitures by texts of Scripture and the history of the Church, upbraids Gregory for being an accomplice in the setting up of a rival king, and reminds the pope that he himself has been accused of unlawful striving after the papal dignity, and even of the use of force to attain this end.

The first part of the tale, Barbash indicates, related to Foster's early acceptance of the strategy of dual unionism — the establishment of radical rival unions to already-existing unions with a conservative, business-friendly orientation — and his growing realization of the "dangerous character" of such a plan and embrace of the alternative tactic of "boring from within" conservative unions to radicalize them. After joining the Communist movement, Foster's emphasis becomes one of detailing the "boring from within" process as practiced by the Trade Union Educational League which he headed, Barbash notes. Barbash is critical of the way that Foster failed to acknowledge the success of Samuel Gompers in establishing trade unions capable of withstanding the pressures of economic depression and his tendency to vilify his opponents as practitioners of "deliberate deception," calling them "ultra-reactionary, misleaders, and betrayers." He also upbraids Foster for an inability or unwillingness to admit error in explaining various tactical reversals of the Communists, which were transformed from support of third party Presidential politics in 1924 to a strategy of "defeating Landon at all costs" in the election of 1936.
