In Nishimura's psychedelic "Epigraph I, Dash Toward Life" (2017), the crumpled frame of a bicycle floats over an active background of splattered light-blue, lavender, and muted cantaloupe orange, and in "Death Flowers" (2015), a cluster of thickly painted, golden-yellow spirals creates a richly textured batch of mystery plants poking out of a large, squat vase.

After an opening image of the Westworld saloon's now-iconic piano splattered in blood like a House remake, we see androids Dolores and Teddy slaughtering humans on horseback, Thandie Newton's Maeve surveying the employee corpses she mowed down during her big escape, and Ed Harris's Man in Black waking up after taking a gunshot to the chest.

These streams of color are then manipulated by an artist into patterns — there are dozens of traditional ones, some dating back to the mid-15th century, including the fanned "peacock," the splattered amoeba-shaped "Turkish spot," the spiraling "French curl" and the Carrara-like "Italian pattern" — using everything from wooden combs and squirrel-hair brushes to swan- and goose-wing quills.

At the Columbus Circle women's store, I spied one garment that appeared to encapsulate it all: an off-the-shoulder blue and white pinstripe shirt-cloth top, tied at the waist, and with emerald-color beads embellishing the front of the top in small, splattered patterns ($118, with a satchel of extra beads, though you could hardly do more damage to the top).

It wouldn't be like not just sleeping with your ex, but continuing to live in their house and seeing their big spiteful face every morning until you start to feel your body stewing and boiling in impotent rage and you find yourself entertaining violent fantasies of murder-suicide and body parts splattered all over their obsessive imitation of a happy home; it wouldn't be like that; it wouldn't be like that at all.

After disposing of what becomes a brain-splattered Chevy Nova, Jules and Vince are hungry for breakfast and opt for a cheapy diner (Tarantino reportedly wrote the diner scenes of Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs with Denny's in mind, but the company wouldn't give him permission to film there), which winds up being the same diner that partners-in-crime Ringo (Tim Roth) and Yolanda (Amanda Plummer) decide to rob at gunpoint.

For the music nerds who have followed this band's fascinating career over the last eleven years, there's still flecks of impeccable reference points that have cemented MGMT as quite possibly the strangest major-label act in existence: jittery opener "She Works Out Too Much" is a hat-tip to legendary Japanese pop aesthetes Yellow Music Orchestra, while "Days That Got Away" and "When You Die" bear the unmistakable splattered pastels of Ariel Pink (who, not coincidentally, has songwriting credits on the latter, as well as several other songs on Little Dark Age).

It may have gone relatively unnoticed at the time because tectonic MMA shifts were happening all over the place back then, but in the July 28 issue of The New Yorker, that paragon of cerebral sophistication and literary fussiness (the very opposite of the blood-splattered, manic world of MMA), there was a profile of Ronda Rousey, who earlier that month had demolished Alexis Davis in just 16 seconds, further solidifying the commonly held belief (echoed in that profile) that the women's bantamweight champion was a culture-changing figure, an unprecedented athletic force single-handedly dragging her sport and the whole human race into the future by pure will and talent.
