As a founding board member of Hazing Prevention—and someone who has worked with fraternities and sororities for more than 20 years—Bureau has a feel for why fraternities drag their feet when it comes to change.

It might not be the typical way to celebrate the American national holiday dedicated to the leader of the civil rights movement, but for some sororities and fraternities in the Pacific Northwest, it's a long-running tradition.

Angered by a campus rule that forbids sororities from hosting their own parties, these sisters, led by a mouthy Chloë Grace Moretz, are determined to exercise their right to drink, dope and grope as enthusiastically as men.

A University of Maine study from 2008, the most recent year for which such research is available, found that 73% of students in fraternities and sororities experienced what they called some form of hazing at least once.

" The University at Buffalo this weekend suspended all official activities of its more than 35 social fraternities and sororities after a freshman was taken to the hospital in what the school has called a "suspected hazing incident.

And Florida State University suspended all frats and sororities for two months after the November 2017 death of Pi Kappa Phi pledge Andrew Coffey, which has since been determined to have been due to hazing, according to police.

"Although the fraternities, sororities, and final clubs are not formally recognized by the College, they play an unmistakable and growing role in student life, in many cases enacting forms of privilege and exclusion at odds with our deepest values," Faust wrote in the email.

After Harvard instituted a policy that barred students in single-gender social clubs from holding leadership positions and opportunities for prestigious fellowships and scholarships, several sororities and fraternities are suing the school, saying the policy is sex discrimination under Title IX and the U.S. Constitution.

There's some evidence that students in fraternities maintain higher-than-average grades, and the Gallup-Purdue Index, a far-reaching survey of American college graduates, found that those who belonged to fraternities and sororities reported more career and life satisfaction later on than those who didn't.

Black sororities notably don't post recruitment videos on YouTube; you're much more likely to find personal vlogs about Greek life, videos of live step shows, or probate ceremonies — the introduction of a new recruit into the community, which tends to come with lots of uplifting messages about the sorority and the women in it.

But until we find ways to talk about systemic problems in Greek culture without shaming the women who join it, sororities online will continue holding a precarious position: between (mostly white) sisters defiantly doing it for themselves, and (mostly everyone else) attempting to shame them out of existence — or at least off the internet.

Hannah from Hope, Pa., has ideas for reasonable enforcements: I think that fraternities and sororities are part of the reason that many kids want to go to college, so in no way is there a part of me saying they should be abolished, but the universities should maybe keep a tighter leash on them.

At a "Black Women's Weekend of Action," in South Carolina, Harris made a woman stand up and plug her own small business when she asked the senator a question, introducing the woman's work to a massive audience of women that looked like her, including members of black sororities like Harris' own Alpha Kappa Alpha Inc.

Activities like fraternity parties and initiations have been suspended or curtailed at colleges including Ball State, Indiana University, Ohio State and the University of Michigan, as well as at least five where deaths have occurred this year: Florida State, Louisiana State, Penn State, Texas State and Iowa, where fraternities and sororities on good behavior have been permitted to hold one strictly monitored party per semester.

The lawsuits call for an injunction to halt Harvard's policy that punishes members of single-sex organizations on the basis that it violates rights to free association given by the Constitution and equal treatment based on sex from Title IX. "As a result of this policy, almost all of the once vibrant sororities and women's final clubs open to Harvard women have either closed or had to renounce their proud status as women's social organizations," said Renee Zainer, International President of Alpha Phi, a plaintiff organization in the state case.
