Little by little, however, illustration has worked its way onscreen, whether in the form of Fergus "Fergadellic" Purcell bringing his sketchbook images to life in a short animation, Peter Saville and the artist Julie Verhoeven creating an interactive Shibari-bondage wallpaper design or footage of Stephen Jones and the textile designer Celia Birtwell giggling as they "finger paint" with nail-mounted pen nibs.

Through a playful blending of words and drawings (conveyed in a smooth English translation by Mara Faye Lethem), the illustrator Gusti, who was born in Argentina and now lives in Barcelona, offers an autobiographical account — part sketchbook, part collage and part fragmentary story — of how he, his wife and their older son dealt with the fact that his younger son, Mallko, was born with Down syndrome.

In another room, we are shown a glimpse of her method with a film that presents source images and paintings side by side — photographs of sunsets and roads that become the lines of her canvases — and a selection of pages from a sketchbook where compositions are tried and tested in watercolor, the page cut up and rearranged into the Tetris-like stepped forms for which she is best known.

A few minutes later, I spotted an older man on a bench sketching a marble Roman statue called "Marble torso of a youth" dating back to roughly 118 A.D. His name was David Farrell, a 67-year-old artist visiting from Hillsboro, N.M. He said he had been regularly coming to the Met since the 1970s, filling up his sketchbook, and he was up to around 70 visits.

She reads by bat-light and sees two William Bartrams as she reads: the bright-eyed thirty-four-year-old explorer with the tan skin and sinewy muscles and the sketchbook, besieged by alligators, comfortable supping alone with mosquitoes and with rich indigo planters alike, and also Bartram's older paler self, in the quiet of his Pennsylvania garden, projecting his joy and his younger persona onto the page.

When she's not hanging out at the bowling alley with her friends ogling the "hot older guy" (Adam Scott, in a casting choice that Hollywood keeps trying to feed us, and that I can't quite get behind) who spends his nights there, and documenting the dicks she's come into contact with in a sketchbook, she's leaving messages for her father on the prison's messaging system, updating him about her life, and her growing budget.

Along with these items, we see a bottle of beer; two pretzel sticks, one of which is broken and perhaps partly eaten, complete with crumbs; a BLT sandwich; two books stacked on top of each other, with the famous Mark Rothko-emblazoned cover of Irving Sandler's Triumph of American Painting on top; an open sketchbook filled with drawings and notes; brushes and a bottle cleaner; a pencil and handsaw; and a rolled-up diploma tied with a red ribbon.

Yet even as his art became more figurative, he never relinquished Surrealism's Sadean idea that any living body partakes in its own haunting unreality, a realm encapsulated by the unimaginable specter of its death, a parsing manifested in the pair of sketchbook drawings from 1951, labeled "Sketches of a Woman and a Man Wielding a Sword," in which a naked woman lounges with legs spread while, on the facing page, a man ominously brandishes a long blade.
