Miners could ascend and descend at the same time: the pause at the changeover point was made long enough (typically between two and eight seconds) for two men to change places. To facilitate this some installations (such as at the Devon Great Consols mine, Tavistock) had a fixed platform at both sides of the shaft, one side for miners descending and one for those on the ascent. Counterweights – large boxes filled with stones attached through "see-sawing" horizontal beams – were installed to avoid the full weight of the shaft and men bearing on the top linkage. In the deepest mines, which could sink to more than 350 fathoms (640 metres), extra counterweights were provided at regular intervals, in horizontal side galleries.

Glenorchy and North Hobart would battle it out in the First Semi Final on 5 September at North Hobart Oval. North Hobart, after a slow start and trailing Glenorchy by a point at half- time, went on a ten-goal third quarter rampage as a powerless Magpie outfit could do nothing to stop an ominous-looking Demon team from racing away to an impressive 73-point win.

Perry also excelled throughout the limited-overs fixtures, which included an unbeaten 90 off 95 to steer her team across the line by four wickets with three balls remaining in a one-dayer at Bellerive Oval. Due to the structure of the points system, England regained the Ashes, although Perry was nevertheless awarded Player of the Series.

A see-sawing action followed over the next couple of days, in which the main Australian force, consisting largely of Captain Arthur Dean's 'C' Company, was pushed back along the track to the battalion's headquarters around Deniki. Dean was amongst those killed in the fighting and as the pursuers followed 'C' Company back to Deniki, Cameron hastily organised the defence of his headquarters, which had to fight off an attack over several hours. Elsewhere, 'D' Company, under Captain Maxwell Bidstrup, took Pirivi to the east of Eora Creek, thus placing pressure on the Japanese rear, while another Australian company - Captain Noel Symington's 'A' Company - retook Kokoda, finding it practically undefended.

After retiring from playing, Lawry worked as a commentator on radio and television, firstly with Channel 7 and then Channel 0 Melbourne, joining Channel 9 television, beginning in the days of World Series Cricket in the 1977-78 season. His distinctive, enthusiastic and excitable style has often been parodied, especially in The Twelfth Man series; in addition for his persistent use of cliches, the Victorian was known for his signature catchcries, particularly "Got him, yes he's gone!" whenever a wicket fell, "It's all happening!" in reference to a see-sawing or chaotic passage of play, and "bang" (when a batsman attempts a long hit) and for his love of racing pigeons. Lawry's long- running, argumentative but humorous commentary partnership with the South African-born former English captain Tony Greig was a mainstay of the Nine Network's commentary offering for 33 years, ending with Greig's death in December 2012. During the 1983–84 summer Lawry criticised a player for "fielding like a girl".
" He considers the distinction drawn with that case to be flimsy and not "clear, sound, or convincing."Note, The Right of the Patentee to Control the Resale Price, 12 394 (1914). A contemporary Note in the California Law Review also observed that in light of the A.B. Dick decision it was natural "that some slight surprise should be occasioned by the decision of the Supreme Court in the so-called Sanatogen case which holds that a patentee is without right to make or enforce a resale price stipulation." More accurately than the Michigan note, this note attributed the see-sawing in recent years to the changes in the personnel of a closely divided Court and successive replacements by new Roosevelt, Taft, and Wilson appointees: Granville Munson, in a 1917 article on post-sale restraints, found the A.B. Dick and Bauer cases irreconcilable: "It is submitted the Sanatogen case and the Dick case cannot both be upheld, although the court professes to distinguish the latter.
An example of a push-rod suspension setup (rocker arms are mounted at the top) Push-rod and pull-rod suspension are similar yet distinct in design, with the main difference being the placement of the rocker arm that controls shock damping in relation to the upper control arm. In effect, this means that both push-rod and pull-rod systems are functionally the same design. In a push-rod suspension system, there is an upper and lower control arm, similar in design to a double- wishbone frame, which provide a structurally integral connection between the wheel hubs and the chassis. These arms are able to pivot inwards towards the centre of the vehicle, meaning that as the wheels experience shocks from the ground, they move up and down. Between these two wishbone control arms, the wheel hubs connect to a rigid ‘push rod’. Here, as the wheels move latitudinally, this rod will push upwards against an oscillating rocker arm, creating a ‘see-sawing’ motion that transfers latitudinal forces from the ground into longitudinal forces inwards towards the chassis.
Fire's trip to the playoffs was yet again a frustrating one, as the #1 seeds fell 4–0 to Heartland Division runners-up Des Moines Menace in the conference semi-final. Dave Leung was Fire's top scorer, with 8 goals (closely followed by Brown and Mehreioskouei with 6 each), while Leung, John DiRaimondo and John Michael Hayden all contributed 3 assists. The team changed its name to Chicago Fire Premier in 2006, and made it six for six in league play, taking Great Lakes Division once more with an impressive 14–2–0 regular season record, 12 points clear of perennial bridesmaids, Michigan Bucks. Chicago actually lost their second game of the season, 2–0 at home to Kalamazoo Kingdom but recovered quickly to rattle off eleven consecutive victories over the next two months. Striker Ryan Anderson scored a hat trick in the 4–0 win over Indiana Invaders in late May, and then held on to take a 4–3 victory in the see-sawing return fixture in South Bend in June.
Ricky Ponting chose to bat when he won the toss for the visiting Australian cricket team in an extremely tense and see-sawing match at The County Ground, Bristol. It looked like a great decision when Jon Lewis and Darren Gough were smashed about early on, as Australia made their way to 57 for 0 after 11 overs with Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden taking sixes off Lewis over midwicket. However, with the entrance of Steve Harmison, everything changed. In his third over – the 12th of the game, he removed Gilchrist with a bouncy ball that the batsman edged behind, then Ponting with a yorker that he didn't play at – resulting in lbw – then a dot ball, and then Martyn with a slog shot to Pietersen at third man. Australia tried to consolidate, but when Hayden tried to hit out off Harmison four overs later, Paul Collingwood jumped up to pick the ball out of the air with his right hand – a magnificent catch, and Australia had lost four wickets for six runs, reminiscent of their collapse in the Twenty20 match earlier on in the week.
