And yet, this being Disco Inferno, things are never quite that straightforward. While noting that their first album sounded like Lifetime, Aubin Paul wrote that the band "found themselves" with Through Being Cool. At the same time, Paul argued that part of the album were derivative, highlighting in particular one song that he felt was "almost identical" to the Samiam song "Capsized".

Borland's last release during his lifetime was the album 5:00AM. A switch to Earth Records and a slight change of crew – Tim Smith of Cardiacs now co-produced with Borland – were the only ostensible differences between the new work and Cinematic. However, the money invested in the album allowed for much better production, a direct result of which was the recording and inclusion of "Baby Moon", a song which Borland had held onto since 1993 but did not want to waste 'on a lo-fi production'. The songs are generally punchier and more radio- friendly, such as opener "Stray Bullets", "City Speed" and "Redemption's Knees", but containing powerful, dark, indolent tracks which, at this point, Borland had made his solo trademark: "Vampiric" is arguably the best example of this in all of his discography.
K. Ross Hoffman of AllMusic gave Mariachi El Bronx four and a half stars out of five, saying that "If there was any doubt that the gringo Angeleno hardcore punks in The Bronx were dead serious about their Mexican folk alter-ego ... the outfit's second album offers ironclad reassurance that this is no novelty act." He remarked that the album was a "significant improvement" over the band's 2009 mariachi album "in almost every respect: both the production and the performances are notably crisper and punchier; the arrangements are richer and more complex, full of swirling, soaring strings; the stylistic range is successfully broadened (to encompass cumbia, norteño, and bolero), and the passion and fire on display are simply undeniable. And the songs, in particular, are uniformly strong and memorable".
Let It Ride garnered a mixed reception upon release. At the time the Shed's were deemed to be taking on a 'new', punchier sound following first hearings of their comeback single, "She Left Me on Friday", with various reviewers drawing comparisons to both Black Grape and Blur. The NME, who labelled the song "the most fiendishly clever Blur parody ever", went on to liken the album's sound to that of both The Rolling Stones and The Stone Roses in their lukewarm review; Writing for The Guardian in June 1998, Caroline Sullivan saw Let It Ride as an improvement on the band's previous album, stating that "it aspires to bigger things, and almost gets there [whilst] singer Rick Witter has even acquired a raspiness that complements the beefy music".

In a 1978 interview, Purdie claimed to have added drum overdubs to "several [tracks] of the Beatles' Hamburg recording" with Tony Sheridan, including "Ain't She Sweet", "Take Out Some Insurance On Me Baby" and "Sweet Georgia Brown", to give them a punchier sound for the US market. Purdie was contracted by arranger Sammy Lowe to play a session with James Brown in 1965 and recording session records also show that Purdie played on "Ain't That A Groove" at the same session. Purdie is credited on the James Brown's albums Say It Loud – I'm Black and I'm Proud (1969) and Get on the Good Foot (1972).
After 1973, to streamline production, labour-intensive handwiring was discontinued and Marshall valve amplifiers were switched to printed-circuit-board (PCBs). Much of the debate about the difference in tone between the plexi- and aluminium- panel Marshall amps originates from 1974 when a number of circuit changes were made to the 1959 and 1987 amplifiers; with the addition of 'mkII' added to the 'Super Lead' name on the back panel and 'JMP' ("Jim Marshall Products") added to the left of the power switch on the front panel. Marshall's US distributor Unicord also had them change all the amps sold in the US and Japan to the much more rugged General Electric 6550 instead of the EL34 output tube. The combined effect of different tubes and a modified circuit gave these mid-1970s Marshalls a very bright and aggressive sound that was punchier than the EL34 sound, but not as rich, compressed, and had less poweramp distortion. In late 1975, Marshall introduced the "Master Volume" ("MV") series with the 100W 2203, followed in 1976 by the 50W 2204.
