When buying Alcatel-Lucent in 2016, Nokia pledged to hire 500 people in research and development in France, but the firm said earlier this month it would cut nearly 600 jobs in France by end-2019 as part of a cost-cutting plan.
Unlike the deep restructuring in past years at recently merged rivals Nokia and Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson's cost cuts have been gradual, with additional measures announced in the two past quarterly reports on top of a big cost cutting program in place since 2014.
Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld had previously been CEO of GD Searle and General Instrument and served on the boards of Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Gilead Sciences and Tribune Co. Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill was CEO of Alcoa and director of Eastman Kodak and Lucent Technologies.
"Having worked with lots of Lucent, Avaya, HP, United, and other employees in the 2001 recession who lost their shirts by being over-invested in company stock, I'm leery of the employee stock purchase plans," said Kristin Sullivan, a certified financial planner in Denver.

Nokia, which bought rival Alcatel-Lucent this year in a bid to cope, forecast at an investor meeting in Barcelona that its network equipment sales were likely to fall around 2 percent next year, in line with the broader market, and return to modest growth in 2018.

One notable name absent from the line-up is Lucent Dossier Experience, the Cirque du Soleil-meets-Burning Man performance troop that has been a a fixture at The DoLaB since 2006 (sans 2014 when the group got its own slot on one of the primary festival tents).
