An opening in the roof served to carry off smoke, and the doorway was a narrow opening in front from ground to roof. As many as three families occupied one of these little houses, with all persons cooking at the same fire. For summer camps, brush lean-tos were set up. The dog was the only domesticated animal.

Pitro Zalenko, known as the "Hendy Hermit" or the "Boonville Hermit," lived in Hendy Woods State Park in California for more than 18 years during the 1960s and '70s in huts of his own construction consisting of redwood plank lean-tos, one of which was located on a hollowed- out tree stump. He subsisted on small game such as chipmunk and produce from nearby farms and obtained clothing discarded by others.

MLM houses in Grandin, Missouri, In addition to the headquarters building and other commercial and service structures in Grandin, MLM built homes that it rented to employees with families. Over 475 houses were built, which it rented for $1 per room per month. Many were two story, with painted weatherboard siding, and gable roofs. These houses were two room-wide, one room-deep rectangular structures, often with front porches and rear lean-tos added.

Tuscarora Scout Reservation is a Boy Scouts of America camp located on 1200 acres (4.5 km²) around Summit Lake in New York State's Southern Tier. By 1743, there were 10 families settled at Number 4. The fortification within Number 4 was established in 1744 when the people of the town voted to move several of their homes to created a fortified section of the town. The "fort" was a rectangle of six houses connected with lean-tos. The southern end of the fort consisted of a two-story structure with a Great Hall on the second floor and an attached guard tower.

Locust Grove, also known as the Goodwin Farm, is a historic home located at Rapidan, Culpeper County, Virginia. The original section was built about 1730, and expanded in at least four major building campaigns over the next half- century. It had its present configuration by 1840. The house is a 1 1/2-story, four bay, log and frame structure featuring a central chimney, two-room plan main block flanked by early gable-end lean-tos and rear additions.

The line was completed and opened for business on 1 October 1877. The line was mostly served by whistle stops consisting of lean-tos with green flags that would be displayed to call for a stop. A large wharf was built on the lakeshore in 1879, giving rise to the village of Jackson's Point. The main services for the LSJR were summertime passengers visiting the beaches to the west, and a major wintertime service shipping cut ice to Toronto.

Elmore State Park is located in northern Elmore, a rural community in southern Lamoille County, Vermont. The park covers , set between Lake Elmore and the summit of Elmore Mountain. Its developed area is located at the northern end of the lake, where Beach Road runs west from Vermont Route 12. The campground facilities, located north of the beach include 44 tent/RV sites and 15 lean-tos, two restrooms with hot showers, and a sanitary dump station.

Early in the 1900s, recreational use increased dramatically. The State Conservation Department (now the DEC) responded by building more facilities: boat docks, tent platforms, lean-tos, and telephone and electrical lines. With the building of the Interstate 87 in the 1960s, private lands came under great pressure for development. This growing crisis led to the 1971 creation of the Adirondack Park Agency (APA) to develop long-range land-use plans for both the public and private lands within the Blue Line.

Allegany State Park's section of the trail includes 4 lean-tos, two in the Quaker Area, and the other two in the Red House area. The Black Snake Mountain trail is also unique due to its direct contact with the Pennsylvania state line. One of the attractions on this trail is a concrete marker shows the exact line where New York and Pennsylvania meet. It is short enough that one could sit on the marker, and be in two states at once.

In 1693, the old farmhouse burned down. However, the foundation and the creamery survived the fire, and were incorporated into the reconstruction of the house, which was completed in 1698. This project was spearheaded by tradesmen, mainly masons, carpenters, and woodworkers. The architecture of the rebuilt house, mainly the two-storey body, the oak frame and ash beams, and the lean-tos, contributed to the heritage value of the house because it captured the essence of 17th century structural design.

The DCNR recommends that people planning to hike the whole Susquehannock Trail System plan for at least a week. The East Branch of the Oswegatchie is a fine canoeing stream and is used as such to reach interior wilderness points of interest. The river has received increasing use in recent years and care must be taken that such use does not result in resource degradation. There is a 3.5 mile canoe carry at approximately 18 miles upstream that leads the traveler to Lows Lake via Big Deer Pond. The existing lean-tos on the river will be phased out and ultimately replaced by primitive tent sites.

Yavapai homesAn early hut which served as a home of a Yavapai family The Yavapai built brush shelter dwellings called Wa'm bu nya:va (Wom-boo-nya-va). In summer, they built simple lean-tos without walls. During winter months, closed huts (called uwas) would be built of ocotillo branches or other wood and covered with animal skins, grasses, bark, and/or dirt. In the Colorado River area, Ɖo:lkabaya built Uwađ a'mađva, a rectangular hut, that had dirt piled up against its sides for insulation, and a flat roof.

Batek houses in Taman Negara, Malaysia. The Batek normally live in familial groups, in tents and lean-tos, with about 10 families forming an encampment. Each encampment generally has control of the land immediately around it, but since the Batek do not believe in the concept of private land ownership, the encampment considers it to be the caretaker of the land, rather than its owner. Also since they are nomadic once most of the usable wild plant resources have been depleted from a given location they will move to another spot, within their habitat.

Law enforcement officers believe Dugard was later kept in concealed tents, sheds, and lean-tos in an area behind the Garridos' house at 1554 Walnut Avenue in Antioch, California, for 18 years. During her confinement, Dugard gave birth to two daughters, who were 11 and 15 at the time of her reappearance. On June 2, 2011, Garrido was sentenced to 431 years to life imprisonment; his wife, Nancy, also received 36 years to life. Garrido is a person of interest in at least one other San Francisco Bay Area missing-person case.

On February 2, the party held church services for the first time under a large oak tree. A drawing of an old fort built at Dorchester The new settlers first built crude wooden lean-tos to live in, and set to work on the more important task – building a church. They named the church Old White Meeting House, after the Reverend John White of England, who had supported their emigration. They also recycled the name Dorchester for the new town, and intentionally built it to resemble other Dorchesters they had come from.

There are currently seven national hiking areas in the country. The planning of national park management and utilisation began in 1974 with a national park working group set up by Metsähallitus. Building up of the service offering for hikers, such as routes, lean-tos and campfire sites, began in 1978 according to the first management and utilisation plans. National parks and a number of other nature conservation areas today offer hiking and recreational possibilities across the country. For many years, Metsähallitus’ nature conservation tasks were handled as a part of forestry operations.

The camp offers many camping opportunities for Scouts. Campsites range from primitive to rustic sites with lean-tos, to buildings with wood-burning stoves, winterized buildings, training centers with kitchen equipment that can support large groups, and the theme buildings that house the Cub Scout Adventure Camp. The camp is staffed by professional forest rangers, assisted on week-ends by BSA volunteers known as "Camp Masters". The Cub Scout Adventure Camp, also known as "CSAC," was dedicated in 1993 and operates at Camp Cutler in July and August.

There are a number of campsites and lean-tos in the area, and trails lead from the dam to most of the high peaks; Mount Marcy is to the southeast. During Hurricane Irene, the dam was damaged due to flooding and the pond was partially drained.

The Pharaoh Lake Wilderness Area, an Adirondack Park unit of New York's Forest Preserve, straddles the Essex County-Warren County line in the towns of Ticonderoga, Hague, Horicon and Schroon. The county road along the east shore of Schroon Lake forms the western boundary; to the north, private land and NY 74 form the boundary. The state land boundary forms most of the remaining perimeter except for a stretch of NY 8 on the south. The area contains 39 bodies of water covering 1,100 acres (4.4 km2), 62.8 miles (101 km) of foot trails, and 14 lean-tos.

The Seha Sorghum Mill stands on a farm about east of Elysian, Minnesota. It was built onto a low hill, allowing gravity to move the liquid through the various processing stages without the need for pumps. The oldest portion of the building is in the northwest corner, and includes the west-facing main door, three small windows on a south-facing eave, and the evaporator ventilator monitor along the roofline. Various lean-tos and additions have expanded the building, most notably an enclosure for the steam engine and boiler that is topped with a tall pipe chimney.

Button Bay State Park is a 253-acre state park in Ferrisburgh, Vermont on the shore of Lake Champlain. Activities includes boating, swimming, camping, fishing, hiking, picnicking, wildlife watching, water sports and winter sports. Facilities include a swimming pool with lifeguards, canoe and kayak rentals, a large picnic shelter and picnic areas, a play area, 73 campsites including 13 lean-tos and 4 cabins, flush toilets, hot showers, and a dump station. The park includes the Button Point Natural Area, a 14-acre site including the 2-acre Button Island and an 8-acre peninsula with a mature forest stand.

The camp has a lakeside waterfront, hiking trails and 10 campsites equipped with tent platforms and lean-tos. In 2007 a gravel road was put in from the entrance to the Dining Hall and in 2008 a new Science and Tech Building was built to promote Science and Technology for 14- to 18-year-olds.[2] In 2010 Pooler's Pond was added for Cub Scout fishing and boating. In 2017 an ATV safety program was added, in partnership with Honda and the ATV Safety Institute, for summer and off season use by individual 14 and older.

Recreation is limited to passive activities such as hiking, camping, hunting, birding and angling which are themselves subject to some further restrictions to ensure that they leave no trace for later recreationists. Special restrictions were recently imposed to limit impact on the largest and most popular wilderness area, the High Peaks Wilderness Complex in the Adirondacks. Powered equipment, such as chainsaws, may be necessary to keep trails open but such use is permitted only with the express written authorization of the DEC commissioner. Structures other than those that facilitate recreational use, such as bridges and lean-tos, are generally not allowed, either.

Most of the huts began as caravans to which annexes and lean-tos were added, with walls and roofs of galvanised iron and "billy boulders" (large irregular-shaped stones of hard siliceous material) and other light materials, on frames of poles. Toilets and showers usually were built some metres distant from the hut. Designated as a fossicking area, and remote from the townships, Tomahawk Creek has not been machine mined but has been explored and mined by hand miners and tourists. The last Mining Claim expired about 1991, when two occupants applied for Permits to Occupy.

There were few homes on Dead Island, so the Harveys and some of the survivors built lean-tos for shelter. When Captain Grant of HMS Tyne arrived about eight days later, after receiving word of the wreck, they found no bread, flour or tea left in the Harvey home, their winter provisions all gone. Grant replenished the food stocks of the Harveys and removed the survivors to Halifax, where news of the heroism of Ann and her father travelled throughout the island. From Government House, Governor Thomas Cochrane applied to the Royal Humane Society for recognition of the family and a special medal was struck.

The Silver Lake Wilderness Area, an Adirondack Park unit of the Forest Preserve, is located in the towns of Lake Pleasant, Benson, Wells and Arietta in Hamilton County and is roughly bounded on the north by NY 8 and private lands near Piseco Lake, Oxbow Lake, Hamilton Lake, Sand Lake and Lake Pleasant; on the east by NY 30; on the south generally by the Hamilton County line; and on the west by NY 10, the West Branch of the Sacandaga River and the Piseco Outlet. The area contains 48 bodies of water covering 569 acres (2.3 km2), 26.5 miles (42.6 km) of foot trails, and 2 lean-tos.

The fire in the 4th Ward The fire spread quickly up to Edgewood Avenue and from there throughout the main residential areas of Sweet Auburn, sparing little. The area between Decatur and Edgewood was crammed with shanties and lean-tos, which provided fuel for the fire to grow very strong and move fast through the area. A corridor was burned due north between Jackson (now Parkway and Charles Allen) and Boulevard, with a few prominent bulges at Highland and just south of Ponce de Leon Avenue. At Houston Street, the fire was still being stopped on the east by Boulevard (just sparing John Wesley Dobbs' block).

The phenomenon blossomed after the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War: with refugees rushing into the unoccupied concessions from the Chinese zones in Hongkou and Zhabei, and further afield, there was dramatically increased demand for housing in the concessions. "Second landlords" used increasingly creative ways to sub-divide rooms and build add-ons and lean-tos in the courtyards and on the terraces.

In addition to summer camps, the camp hosts other Scouting events. In 1952 the camp added a "new trading post, handicraft lodge, year-around troop lodge and four Adirondack lean-tos" On September 29, 1953 the camp hosted the election of Ben Belchic, who succeeded Bonn A. Poland, to Shenandoah Area Council president. The Shenandoah Area Council held two weekend training sessions at the camp for 45 Scouts selected to represent the council as a troop at the 1969 National Jamboree. One Scout later remembered being asked, “What do you think of the Vietnam situation?” at his interview before inclusion in the delegation. September 29–30, 1945 the camp hosted the first ever Shenandoah Area Council Cub-o-ree.

The names Blagden Alley and Naylor Court were derived from two 19th-century property owners, Thomas Blagden and Dickerson Nailor. After the Civil War, residential development in Washington, DC, expanded north from downtown to the Blagden Alley-Naylor Court area and attracted several prestigious, affluent residents, including Blanche Bruce, the first African-American to serve a full term in the U.S. Senate, whose historic house is adjacent to the south entrance to Blagden Alley. Many African-Americans migrated to Washington during this time and came to live in the alley itself in simple dwellings, including lean-tos, and shanties. Local residents saw the alley dwellings as a nuisance, and Congress passed a law banning their construction in 1892.

At one time the view was even more expansive, but since camping on the summit is now banned except during winter and in emergencies, the balsam fir has grown back in around the edges of the clearing, giving the area a more natural look. Close inspection, in fact, can find remnants of the two lean-tos that once stood here before 1975 when camping was permitted. There is also a spring 0.25 mile (400 m) down the trail to the east. On June 15, 1985, the summit received its most visitors ever at a single time when at least a hundred hikers, nature lovers and DEC officials gathered there to commemorate the centennial of the Forest Preserve.

The Blue Ridge Wilderness Area, a unit of New York's Forest Preserve in the Adirondack Park, is located in the towns of Arietta, Lake Pleasant and Indian Lake in Hamilton County. It is roughly bounded on the north by NY 28; on the east by Route 28 and private lands immediately west of this route; on the south by private lands immediately north and west of Cedar River Flow; and on the west by the Lake Kora and Sagamore Lake properties and the South Inlet of Raquette Lake. It contains 19 bodies of water covering 275 acres (1.1 km2) and features 15 miles (24 km) of foot trails and three lean-tos.

By 1931 the trail that had been built up Belleayre for tourists to reach its lookout tower had been extended over Balsam and was marked as a state-maintained trail on maps. The other two trails had been built by that time as well, the Oliverea-Mapledale trail possibly following an old cattle-herding route over the ridge. A few years later, the pairs of lean-tos in McKenley and Rider hollows were built. The large tract of state land on the range west of Esopus Creek and extending south toward the Beaver Kill Range was designated a wilderness area in the 1980s following a recommendation made in the first Catskill Park State Land Master Plan.

A 19th- century engraving of an indigenous Australian encampment, representing the indigenous mode of life in the cooler parts of Australia before the arrival of Europeans Indigenous Australians are traditionally semi-nomadic, rotating between different areas in conjunction with the seasons in order to harvest and maintain crops. They managed the land through controlled burning practices involving a biennial burning-off which stunted forest growth and encouraged crop germination. The housing of the Eora people first encountered by Europeans in the Sydney region were shelters constructed of a semicircle of stick, covered with large sheets of bark which could be conveniently stripped off Melaleuca trees which grew profusely along waterways. Other types of simple structures were seen including lean-tos and in tropical regions raised sleeping platforms.

Hiking options include Scarface Mountain, Boot Bay Mountain and Shingle Bay Mountain, Panther Mountain, the Fernow Nature Trail, and the Lake Placid Peninsula Nature Trails. There are over of marked trails, including about of snowmobile trails, of canoe carries, of mountain bike trails, and of cross-country skiing trails. There are nearly 250 designated campsites, including 82 in the Saranac Islands Campground on Weller Pond and Middle and Lower Saranac Lakes, eighteen on Upper Saranac Lake, 31 on Follensby Clear Pond, and sixteen along Floodwood Road, along with twelve lean-tos on several of the lakes, ponds, and rivers. There are fifteen boat launches and fishing access sites, located on the Raquette River, Upper and Lower Saranac Lakes, Follensby Clear Pond, Second Pond, Lake Colby, Lake Placid, Lake Flower, Hoel Pond, East Pine Pond, Moose Pond, Little Green Pond, and Little Clear Pond.

Homes in the frontier lands of Kentucky were often unfloored, the shelters ranged between humble lean-tos and more sturdy cabins. Only in the better cabins were hearths made with stone. Daniel Drake, a Cincinnati born physician, described his 18th century Kentucky home: > "I know of no scene in civilized life more primitive than such a cabin > hearth as that of my mother. In the morning, a buckeye backlog & hickory > forestick resting on stone andirons, with a Jonny cake on a clean ash board, > set before it to bake, a frying pan with its long handle resting on a split > bottomed turner's chair, sending out its peculiar music, and the tea kettle > swng from a wooden 'lug pole' with myself setting the table, or turning the > meat, or watching the Jonny cake..." Thomas Ashe mentions salt bacon, squirrel broth and homily in his report of a Kentucky dinner.

The Siamese Ponds Wilderness Area, an Adirondack Park unit of the Forest Preserve, is located in the towns of Lake Pleasant, Wells and Indian Lake in Hamilton County and the towns of Johnsburg and Thurman in Warren County. It is one of the larger wilderness areas of the Northeast; extending about 18 miles (29 km) from north to south and about 13 miles (21 km) from east to west at its widest part. It is roughly bounded by NY 28 on the north; by private land tracts near Thirteenth Lake, Gore Mountain and Bakers Mills and by New York State Route 8 on the east; by Route 8 on the south; and by Route 8, International Paper lands and Indian Lake on the west. The area contains 33 bodies of water covering 945 acres (3.8 km2), 33 miles (53 km) of foot trails, and 4 lean-tos.

The model thus established would hold, more or less, for the next 50 years. Within the Blue Line, the state would acquire land (first through the State Parks Council and successor agencies, later through the Conservation Department) and, as time and money permitted, would develop trails, lean-tos and towers on it, without reference to any greater plan and often with little coordination or knowledge of what other state agencies or officials were doing. Important steps were nonetheless taken. Bond issues approved by voters in 1916 and 1924 for a total of $12.5 million led ultimately to the addition of to the state's holdings. The economic collapse of the late 1920s and 1930s made a lot of desirable land available at low prices, and with the notably aggressive Robert Moses in charge of the state parks, valuable properties like the Devil's Path Range, the summit of Slide Mountain and Windham High Peak became part of the Forest Preserve.
