Cloud Foundry made an early bet on Docker containers, but with Kubo, which Pivotal and Google donated to the project last year, the project gained a new tool for allowing its users to quickly deploy and manage a Kubernetes cluster (Kubernetes being the Google-backed open-source container orchestration tool that itself is becoming the de facto standard for managing containers).

"[Docker and Kubernetes] are by far the most standard things that have developed in any new shop, or any existing shop that wants to build a brand new modern app or wants to lift and shift an app from on prem [to the cloud], or have the ability to migrate workloads from Vendor A platform to Vendor B," he said.

As TechCrunch's Frederic Lardinois pointed out in his article about the company's $2.5 million seed round in 2017, Windisch and Johnson bring impressive credentials: IOpipe co-founders Adam Johnson (CEO) and Erica Windisch (CTO), too, are highly experienced in this space, having previously worked at companies like Docker and Midokura (Adam was the first hire at Midokura and Erica founded Docker's security team).

The company says about a third of Fortune 100 and a fifth of Global 500 companies use Docker Enterprise, which is a statistic most companies would love to be able to highlight — and which makes this sale a bit puzzling from Docker's side, unless the company assumed that few of these customers were going to continue to bet on its technology.

OpsMx has received a modest but undisclosed amount funding from Foundation Capital — one of the original investors in Netflix — and Dell Technologies Capital, as well as several prominent cloud-computing executives such as Adrian Cockcroft, a 10-year veteran of Netflix's cloud build-out and vice president of cloud-architecture strategy at AWS; Scott Johnston, the chief operating officer at Docker; and Guido Appenzeller, the former longtime chief technology officer at VMware.
