The album was supported by the controversial "Dead to the World Tour", which was heavily criticized by elements of the Christian right. Nearly every North American venue the band visited was picketed by religious organizations, predominantly because of unfounded, exaggerated claims of onstage drug use, bestiality, and Satanic rituals, including animal and even human sacrifice. Meanwhile, the band was also reaching new heights of controversy, finding themselves the target of congressional hearings, led by Senator Joseph Lieberman, to determine the effects, if any, of violent lyrics on young listeners. Lieberman would famously go on to refer to Marilyn Manson as "perhaps the sickest group ever promoted by a mainstream record company." Nearly every performance of their Dead to the World tour was picketed by religious organizations. The band, however, embraced the controversy and catapulted themselves into one of the top rock acts of the late 1990s.

Traditionally, legal scholars acknowledge that a central purpose of civil law has been to keep men from violating one another; however, violation of women by men had historically been largely considered a private matter beyond the purview of law.Heyes, C., 2016. “Dead to the World: Rape, Unconsciousness, and Social Media,” Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society, 41: 361–383.

In 1997, Rasputina joined the Arena Tour leg of the year-long worldwide concert tour of American rock band Marilyn Manson, Dead to the World Tour, wherein they served as a "musical interlude" between opening act Helmet and the main act. By mid-April, the eponymous frontman of Marilyn Manson and his bassist Twiggy Ramirez entered the studio with Rasputina to record a remix of the latter's song "Transylvanian Concubine" off of their 1996 release Thanks for the Ether. The resulting sessions produced three tracks, which were previewed online at Rasputina's website. Rasputina went on to join the European Festival Tour leg of the tour as its main opening act.
The series was written by Roy Thomas, who would create a first draft for each issue by working off of the episode's script, then watch the actual episode and modify his work to account for changes made on the set. Topps also published Ground Zero, a four-issue mini-series (December 1997 – March 1998). Tony Isabella reported difficulties with The X-Files creator Chris Carter over the Topps Comics' series: The digest consisted of three issues published at five month intervals beginning December 1995 through September 1996, each featuring separate titles: "Big Foot, Warm Heart", "Dead to the World", and "Scape Goats". Season three loosely follows the plot of the third novel of The Southern Vampire Mysteries, Club Dead, and introduces werewolves to the show's mythology through Alcide, a werewolf hired by Eric to help Sookie find Bill. It also introduces the characters of Russell Edgington, the Vampire King of Mississippi, who wishes to overturn the Vampire Authority. In addition, some characters from the fourth novel Dead to the World are introduced: Crystal Norris as Jason's love interest, her family of werepanthers from Hotshot, and Sookie's "faerie godmother", Claudine. Sookie's heritage as part faerie is also revealed later in the season, a major plot element from the eighth and ninth novels From Dead to Worse and Dead and Gone.
The band is known for their bombastic and controversial stage theatrics involving a massive production. In his tour diary, Manson noted the difference in venues and energy from their previous outings compared to the Dead to the World Tour. Manson often wore his signature costume consisting of an elastic back brace, a jockstrap over a G-string, sheer stockings, leather straps around his calves and heavy-soled black shoes. The shows consisted of multiple set changes including a crumbling church vitral of Jesus depicting a statuary of figures impaled on spears and accompanied by a set of long stairs from which Manson walked down in order to perform the opening piece, "Angel with the Scabbed Wings".
While the band was in Japan for the Japanese leg of the Dead To The World Tour, MTV broke that Manson was involved in a project with Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan who, at the time, was involved with multiple projects of his own. There were no details provided but MTV noted that both frontmen became fast friends at the premiere screening of the 1997 Howard Stern film Private Parts in New York City. Manson wrote about meeting Corgan for the first time during the premiere at length in his tour diary. The reported joint project was never released although Corgan went on to serve as the band's unofficial music consultant for their next studio LP Mechanical Animals.
Their mutual flip-flopping on candidates gives Randy cause for suspicion. After being offered a pie filled with member berries by Stephen, Randy goes to visit the Old Farmer whose crop is being dwarfed by hundreds and hundreds of member berry bushes. Cartman and Heidi Turner, who are both apparently dead to the world for having left Twitter, begin to converse with each other to compensate for the lack of a social media presence, and begin spending time in the park with others who have quit Twitter. Cartman explains to Heidi that his attempt to prove that women are funny at a school assembly was sincere and that he is genuinely trying to change himself.
The band's live performances have also come under fire—the Dead to the World Tour, in particular, was followed by protesters at nearly every North American venue it visited. Several states, including Utah, South Carolina and Virginia, passed legislation specifically targeting the group, which banned them from performing in state-operated venues. These laws would later be repealed, following separate lawsuits from fans, the American Civil Liberties Union, and Ozzy Osbourne, who sued the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority after they forced the cancellation of the New Jersey date of the 1997 Ozzfest at Giants Stadium. On June 30, 2003, the mutilated body of fourteen-year old schoolgirl Jodi Jones was discovered in woodland near her home in Easthouses, Scotland.

Calvin is a full-blooded werepanther and leader of the werepanther community in Hotshot, a close knit and secretive community ten miles from Bon Temps. He is first introduced in the fourth novel, Dead to the World, and he is portrayed as a man in his late forties, with trimmed beard salted with gray, short hair and green golden eyes. He is a small man, around five foot seven inches with an agile build and muscular arms. Because Hotshot takes care of its own justice, Calvin has a good deal of power over its residents, including the power to decide who is executed for their crimes. Calvin is Crystal’s uncle. When he first meets Sookie, she senses that Calvin and Crystal’s relationship is more than the authority of an uncle.
Like most Christian groups, the protesters believed the band's music advocated "murder, rape and pedophilia" and feared it "gets inside of you and you dwell on that and some people can act it out." Republican State Senator Mark McDaniel of North Carolina participated in the protests and printed three hundred leaflets calling the concert, "objectionable for children", which he and a handful of volunteers handed out to passing motorists around the coliseum. McDaniel also gave a speech at an alternative concert, that featured three local Christian rock bands, held by the local First Assembly of God. The alternative concert was organized around the same time it was announced the Dead to the World Tour was coming to town and was meant to counter the Manson show by offering an "alternative" to concertgoers.
The Nightwing title concluded in April 2014 at issue #30, and was replaced with a new title, Grayson, which depicts Dick having given up his life as Nightwing at age 22 and going undercover as an agent of the Spyral organization where the former Batwoman Kathy Kane works. Written by Tim Seeley and former CIA counter-terrorism officer Tom King, the career change for Dick Grayson comes from the urging of Batman himself, who convinces him to remain dead to the world. Seeley stated that the series will be "leaning into" Grayson's sex symbol status. The character's look also is redesigned with no mask, but a blue-and-black outfit calling back to his pre-New 52 Nightwing counterpart with an addition of a "G" on his chest, said to be reminiscent of the Robin "R".
