But what saved all this seriousness of purpose was the way Meirelles and Thomas blended those darker themes with more joyous moments, like a mashup of the past several decades of Brazilian pop, or a gorgeous cross section of a cityscape that called to mind the city's favelas, but in a way that allowed for much more dancing than you might expect.

The album reminds me less of any other contemporary meditative electronica (chill vibe music is an industry now) than, say, the instrumental passages on a late Sonic Youth album (NYC Ghosts & Flowers, maybe) — a dazzled, skewed tour through a concrete pastoral cityscape, frequently stopping to admire the light refracting through windows and between skyscrapers, with occasional hushed voices that rustle like street conversations faintly overheard.

Mark Machado, the homegrown tattoo and graffiti legend known as Mister Cartoon (he has tattooed Mr. Bryant) fashioned two pieces: a paleta ice cream cart in black and purple with the initial "K" and a slithering black mamba snake (a nod to Mr. Bryant's nickname) and a cityscape mural accented in white and yellow gold with another snake, and the sugar skulls the Mexican holiday is famous for.

Without much money, he and his studio partner Phillip Lloyd Powell even got their wood from the reject pile of George Nakashima, their neighbor in New Hope, Pa. A number of promotional images for the show are popping up around town — Redditor-style mashups inserting a present-day ancestor of one of Leonardo's inventions into a Renaissance or Baroque painting: a passenger jet coasting into for a landing in a classical landscape; a military destroyer docking in a Venetian lagoon; a bicyclist riding through a Renaissance cityscape (in the background, Jesus, caught up in some parable or another, is completely oblivious); and a tank riding herd behind a charging cavalry in a battle scene.
