The eighteen- story Biltmore has undergone a number of renovations over the years, the most recent of which was conducted in 1981, when the Kuhlmann Design Group redeveloped the property into elderly housing. Today, the building houses 230 apartments ranging in size from 500 sqft 1-bedrooms to 713 sqft 2-bedrooms. Known as Biltmore Towers - Senior Living, it caters to residents 55 years and older. The building is situated alongside the Great Miami River, steps away from Riverscape Metropark, Victoria Theater, Cooper Park, and Courthouse Square.

The River Wear Commission was formed in 1717 in response to the growing prosperity of Sunderland as a port. Under the Board of Commissioners (a committee of local land owners, ship owners, colliery owners and merchants) a succession of civil engineers adapted the natural riverscape to meet the needs of maritime trade and shipbuilding. Their first major harbour work was the construction in stone of the South Pier (later known as the Old South Pier), begun in 1723 with the aim of diverting the river channel away from sandbanks; the building of the South Pier continued until 1759. The Howard Smith Wharves site is recognised as a Brisbane landmark, and makes a significant contribution to the Brisbane riverscape. Abraham van der Waeyen Pieterszen, Mountainous riverscape with Romanesque church The tomb of Abraham van der Waeyen Pieterszen in Horebeke Abraham van der Waeyen Pieterszen (14 May 1817 in Middelburg – 16 April 1880 in Sint- Maria-Horebeke) was a Dutch-born painter, trained in Antwerp. From 1844 Pieterszen worked as a deacon, later as a preacher for the Protestant Union of Belgium in Antwerp, Brussels, Mecheln and Leuven, finally in Horebeke. For 22 years, from 1857 to 1877, Pieterszen served as agent-général of the committee of evangelisation (Comitée Synodal d'Evangelisation); from 1860 to 1867 as editor of L'Union, the official paper of the Belgian Protestants, too - but this additional task proved to be too much for him. Pieterszen was among the six founders and governors of the Evangelical College (Vlaamsche Opleidingsschool) in Laeken, near Brussels, established in 1875 under the direction by N. de Jonge.

Initially, the need for water power was quite modest, for example Lombe's Silk Mill in Derby, which is considered to be the forerunner of the later cotton mills, only needed to use the power provided by a small mill stream, and Richard Arkwright's Cromford Mill, the world's first water-powered cotton spinning mill, only used a small tributary of the Derwent in conjunction with a lead mine sough. The later mills at Belper, Darley Abbey and Masson Mill were much larger and needed to harness the full power of the river to drive their complex machinery. This required the construction of large weirs across the Derwent that still remain as significant features in the riverscape. These sites were all important in the development of the Industrial Revolution, and Arkwright's innovation, along with several local competitors, is recognised today by the designation of the area as the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.
