And then, to top it all off, Ms. Versace invited some of her brother's favorite models, the ones who had been most associated with his glamazon ideal — Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Helena Christensen, Naomi Campbell and Carla Bruni (or Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, as she is now) — to create a finale tableau for the show that mimicked a 1994 ad campaign shot by Richard Avedon of many of the same models in gowns of gold chain mail.

It proved a fortuitous frame for their collection, as attenuated of line and serene of shade as always, but with a certain new generosity of proportion and nod to modernity: coats pulled off the shoulder and belted to blouse, like a gown, at the back; halter jumpsuits tied in a rope bow on one shoulder with a palazzo width (and no waist); space-age suiting made from white paper, and crocheted chain mail evening hoodies poured over silk.

Christopher Kane, for example, titled his 10th anniversary collection "Make Do and Mend" after the rallying cry of 1940s wartime rationing, and the imperative to create something new out of whatever was at hand: "road kill" fur pencil skirts with stretch tulle T-shirts boned like corsets; squiggle yarn dresses and prints crafted from his own runway archive; knits and chain mail strewn with sparkling geodes, and frilled stretch lace dresses and Lurex pleats spliced with sheer panels, dug up from his own past.

True to form, in a presentation titled "Hunting" and shown under black lights in a friend's apartment hung with a huge Gilbert & George work and decorated to look like a forest, the Spanish designer sent out a giddy assortment of his frilly, sometimes feminine, often historicist, always ornamented and minimally concealing designs for brocade chaps, opera cloaks, sleeveless jerkins with shoulder ruffles, peekaboo lace surplices, trailing gowns (yes, for men), velvet lounge suits, tunics resembling chain mail, marabou-trimmed tabarro capes and ruched velvet bloomers from which the models' skinny hairy legs protruded obscenely.
