By controlling key castles, the Comyns also controlled the main lines of communication, especially in northern Scotland, where their power stretched from Inverlochy Castle in the west to Slains Castle in the east. In Kilnamanagh, the O'Dwyer built several castles, as part of their attempt to defend their lands. Today all of these castles are in ruin, but some of their remains can be seen in County Tipperary. The present state of the castle is the result of renovations and extensions. After 1190, Lord Bernhard II of Lippe had built a stone castle. Their dimensions were similar to those of today's castle.
Today Oberdiessbach Castle remains the home of the von Wattenwyl family. Groups may tour the castle from April until October with prior arraignments. William FitzOsbern established Monmouth Castle between 1066 and 1069 as a counterpart to his other major castle at Chepstow. Reszel Castle (Polish: Zamek w Reszlu, ) is a castle located in Reszel by the bank of the river Sajna, in the south-east of the town. The first line of the Domesday entry for Dudley translates as: "the said William held Dudley; and there is his castle". Some of the earthworks from this castle, notably the "motte", the vast mound on which the present castle keep now sits, still remain. However the earliest castle would have been of wooden construction and no longer exists. Dudley Castle was first mentioned in the Domesday Book After Fitz-Ansculf, the castle came into the possession of the Paganel family, who built the first stone castle on the site.
Since their main castle, nearby Neuburg Castle, was first built around 1300, before then the Tumb von Neuburg family may have lived at Rappenstein or at another demolished castle on Neuburg. One of the walls of the castle shows evidence of a second construction phase which reinforced the wall. This may indicate that the castle was inhabited for a while or that it was used as a fallback fortification in case of war. In 1450 the von Mötteli or von Rappenstein family from around St. Gallen acquired Neuburg Castle and its surroundings including the castle.
Looking up at the top of Haw Hill Haw Hill or Ha' Hill is a mound and scheduled monument in Carlisle Park, Morpeth which was the site of a motte- and-bailey castle, being Morpeth's first castle. The castle was built by the de Merlay family in 1095, originally constructed as a wooden structure, being replaced later by a stone castle in the same location. The stone castle was burnt down by King John in the 13th century and the castle was rebuilt on the adjacent hill, which still stands today as Morpeth Castle.

During archaeological studies in the 1970s the archaeologists discovered an unknown foundation, which allowed for the full reconstruction of the castle.
