Zuma, who said he lost control of the car after a puddle caused him to aquaplane, initially avoided prosecution after the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) decided not to charge him.

Aquaplaning is a surface water sport which involves riding a board (aquaplane) over the surface of a body of water towed behind a motorboat.

Conditions were extremely difficult, and it saw Ayrton Senna display his mastery of wet-weather conditions. The Brazilian led the race from start to finish, and by the time he had finished, he had lapped everyone except 2nd- placed Alboreto. It was Senna's first victory – which was already very impressive considering the appalling conditions that caused drivers including Prost to aquaplane off the circuit.

Pearce came from a family of sporting champions. His father Harry Pearce (nicknamed "Footy" because of the size of his feet) was a world champion sculler. Sandy's brother Walter was an outstanding long distance cyclist, sister Lilly Pearce was also a noted sculler and the first woman to ride an aquaplane on Sydney harbour. Nephew Bobby Pearce was probably the most recognised – a dual Olympic sculling gold medalist.

Ingeborg followed the patrol officer on census taking trips, collected art and went bac to Agats. In order to reach Hollandia, she had to be paddled 15 night hours up the Eilanden river to an oil boring station from which once a week an aquaplane flew to Sorong at the extreme north point of New Guinea. In Sorong she caught commercial flight to Biak-Hollandia-Wewak-Madang-Lae-Port Moresby- Samarai, then Sydney. The crates with all her acquisitions arrived in New York.

All ultimately pitted for intermediates, but lost out for not having done so earlier dropping them to the back of the race. Daniel Ricciardo suffered an exhaust failure on lap 14, causing a virtual safety car. On lap 18, Carlos Sainz lost control of his McLaren at turn 16, causing it to run wide and aquaplane on the slippery, dragstrip area of the track, before narrowly avoiding the barriers. This caused a local yellow flag before he was able to drive off under his own power.

When over-riding the first officer's actions, the captain inadvertently left one engine at TO/GA power and as a result cancelled the preselected auto-brake settings. The landing continued, but manual braking did not commence until the aircraft was over 5,200 feet down the runway. The aircraft then began to aquaplane and skid its way down the runway, departing substantially from the runway centreline. Company standard operating procedures mandated that idle reverse thrust should be used for landings and that flaps should be set at 25 degrees, not the maximum of 30 degrees.

On May 3, 1998, during round 2 of the JGTC at Fuji Speedway, Ota was badly injured. There were 47,000 spectators in attendance for the JGTC round scheduled for 300km (67 laps). At the time of race there was torrential rain and visibility was limited. Following the parade lap, the safety car drove through the starting line at 150 km/h (93 mph) then suddenly slowed down. This caused 910 Racing's Porsche 911 RSR driven by Tomohiko Sunako to aquaplane and strike the rear of Kaoru Hoshino's 911 GT2.

Of the GT300 cars, the third car in front of the Porsches (and 22nd on the grid),AUTOBACS CUP GT Championship 1998 Round 2 – Qualify the BMW M3 of Yasushi Hitotsuyama, behind, managed to avoid the Porsche by driving onto the grass and then back to the circuit, while the Porsche struck a barrier and rested on the grass. A caution flag was waved out. Seconds later, the Team Ferrari Club of Japan's Ferrari F355 Challenge driven by Ota, slowed down, causing it to aquaplane and swerve left directly into the Porsche.

One 45-minute practice session on Sunday morning was held before the early afternoon race. Overnight rain saturated the track, and it recommenced just before the start of the third practice session, causing several drivers to aquaplane on standing water, as they all ran on the standardised all-weather tires. Abt set the fastest lap 15 minutes in with a time of 1 minute and 18.699 seconds before weather conditions deteriorated. He was followed by Evans, Félix da Costa, Buemi, di Grassi, Sarrazin, Lotterer, Vergne, Rosenqvist, and Bird.

An elastic ball that bounces on water, the Waboba water ball flattens like a pancake when it hits the water surface, increasing its lift and propelling it upward. When it hits the water at a shallow angle, it too creates a bowl- shaped depression. But because it is soft, the ball flattens into a disc-shape when it hits the surface and this allows it to aquaplane efficiently across the surface. And the angle of the bowl-shaped depression causes it to launch into the air where the ball regains its shape, making it look as if it has bounced.

Developed in the early 20th century, aquaplaning became popular for several decades but was superseded by the development of similar sports such as water skiing from the 1920s and kneeboarding from the 1950s. The Wisconsin Rapids Newspaper the Wood County reporter published a picture of woman aquaplaning on September 4, 1919. The article talks about how the board was developed from the Hawaiian Islanders surfboards and that by the time of publication thousands were participating in the sport. From 1935 a 44-mile aquaplane race held between Santa Catalina Island and Hermosa Beach, California endorsed by the American Power Boat Association attracted competitors from around the world.

Surrounding the entrance to the trap is a structure called the peristome (the "lip"), which is slippery and often quite colorful, attracting prey, but offering an unsure footing. The prey-capture effectiveness of the peristome is further enhanced in moist environments, where condensation may cause a thin water film to form on the surface of the peristome. When wet, the slippery surface of the peristome causes insects to ‘aquaplane’, or slip and fall, into the pitcher. Above the peristome is a lid (the operculum); in many species, this keeps rain from diluting the fluid within the pitcher, the underside of which may contain nectar glands which attract prey.

The third and final session was a washout following overnight rain with heavy storms predicted ahead of qualifying. The water on the track was so heavy that the FIA sent the safety car out for an assessment of the circuit. Although the one-hour session went ahead, just two drivers – Jaime Alguersuari and Timo Glock – recorded a lap time; Alguersuari, the fastest of the two, set that time that was twenty seconds slower than the fastest laps set by Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber during Friday practice. Several drivers reported that standing water on the circuit made driving very dangerous, while others complained about water running over the circuit that made the cars aquaplane.

The track's deficient drainage caused a large amount of water to cascade from a slope onto the tarmac surface at the Curva do Sol corner and made it susceptible for cars to aquaplane. The race began behind the safety car, with no formation lap; notwithstanding the slow speed drivers struggled for grip on the flooded track surface. Some drivers (including Verstappen, Frentzen, Pizzonia, Panis, Fisichella and Firman) elected to make pit stops for fuel under safety car conditions in an attempt to avoid having to make a second pit stop later in the race. After the rain had stopped, the safety car drove into the pit lane at the end of lap eight, and cars were allowed to overtake.

Four practice sessions were scheduled before the Sunday race, two each on Friday and Saturday. The Friday morning and afternoon sessions lasted an hour; the third and fourth sessions, on Saturday morning, lasted 45 minutes. The Friday practice sessions were held in cool and overcast weather conditions that turned to a downpour in the afternoon, causing several drivers to aquaplane on the wet track. In the first practice session, Michael Schumacher was fastest with a lap of 1 minute, 48.655 seconds, followed by Jordan's Jarno Trulli, Barrichello, Mika Häkkinen of McLaren, Ralf Schumacher, Jean Alesi in the second Jordan, the Saubers of Kimi Räikkönen and Nick Heidfeld, Juan Pablo Montoya of Williams and Giancarlo Fisichella's Benetton.

Sainz was caught out at turn 16 on lap 18, which caused him to run wide and aquaplane on the slippery drag strip area of the track before narrowly avoiding the barriers. Norris' car suffered a power loss on lap 26, prompting a deployment of the safety car. Many teams took the opportunity to enter the pits for a switch to dry weather tyres, however, Sainz and McLaren had decided otherwise, and instead switched to the intermediate weather tyres. Sainz was able to finish in P5 by the end of the race, his and the team's best result of the season. The result also raised McLaren's points total to 70, surpassing the previous year's total of 62 scored by Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne in the MCL33.

The results were overshadowed by a heavy hail storm from Lap 53, which caused three out of the top four cars (Jody Scheckter, James Hunt, and Mark Donohue), to aquaplane and crash in the same corner, bringing an early finish to the race, and a significant absence on the podium. A number of other cars crashed at the same corner as well, including Wilson Fittipaldi, Jochen Mass, and John Watson. The race results were finalised the lap after the lap most cars crashed, giving Brazilian Emerson Fittipaldi, who had been the race leader prior to the storm, a one lap win in his McLaren M23. Carlos Pace, who was one of the crashers in his Brabham BT44B was classified in second position with another of the crashers, Tyrrell 007 driver Jody Scheckter classified third.
