His belief that a plant-derived medicine could work against a major global disease is anything but farfetched: To take one example, the widely used drug for malaria called artemisinin, which is derived from the sweet wormwood plant, was discovered by in the 1970s by the scientist Youyou Tu. She learned how to successfully extract this compound by studying ancient texts of traditional Chinese medicine, an achievement that earned her a Nobel Prize last year.
