It's why the waypoint marker is so crucial to games like Batman: Arkham City, Infamous, Gravity Rush, and The Amazing Spider-Man, which emulate the superhero's experience of the city, knowing that you couldn't possibly navigate those indistinguishable rooftops by yourself.
Listen to Waypoint's Austin Walker and Patrick Klepek talk all about God of War spoilers in this bonus episode of Waypoint Radio: But in games, rigidity in visual storytelling is the thing developers have been trying to surpass for years.
Like most of the country, all of us at Waypoint spent the last month processing the horror of yet another school shooting, while admiring the bravery of the student survivors from Parkland, Florida rising up, demanding change, and taking no bullshit.
In today's Waypoint Radio, we talk about our extensive interview with Sean Murray of Hello Games (the creators of No Man's Sky), about the game, PR and hype, its politics, and the controversy that the team dealt with at launch.
And I wasn't the only one at Waypoint that was true for: (Danika and her palico's fit is fire, by the way.) Patrick had not only hit the same wall I had, but had the same exact experience I did.
A lot of video game villains are cartoonish and over-the-top, but as Danika Harrod argued in a piece on Waypoint this week, sometimes games go too far in trying to make the point that evil people are evil.
But the cornerstone of this investigation are a series of articles about the culture of play at Guantanamo Bay's detention camp and naval base by journalist and war crimes researcher Muira McCammon, whom Waypoint sent to Gitmo earlier this year.

"Five star podcast, five star runtime" has become the unofficial mantra of Waypoint podcasts in the last year or so, a way of admitting we have a very hard time getting any of us to shut up once we get going.
Austin and I managed to tiptoe around a bunch of stuff on Waypoint Radio, but with both of us having recently finished the game, it seemed like a good idea to sit down and talk through the whole damn experience.
It's a disjointed week at Waypoint, with most of the crew headed to Boston for PAX East, but Austin, Natalie, Patrick, Rob, and Cado still found time to sit around some microphones and yap about the games we've been playing.
It's a full crew on Waypoint Radio today, with Austin, myself, Danielle, and Rob huddling around a microphone to discuss our thoughts on the weekend's big event: while streaming PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, the most popular YouTube personality, PewDiePie, used the N-word.
Waypoint published a piece this week about a professor who's cataloged more than 2,000 soda machines in video games, which got Danielle, Rob, and myself thinking about the different ways games choose to represent the most innocuous parts of real-life.
There are only a few more days before the Waypoint staff has to finalize their game of the year lists, which means everyone is hurrying through various games, trying to figure out if there's a game they missed (or forgot about).
Designer Yoko Taro's latest slice of emotional weirdness struck several us at Waypoint, and by the time the credits were rolling for the fifth time, the only thing on our mind was finding a place to spoil the shit out of the game.
The round was led by the private equity firm Novator Partners out of London, with participation from Shasta Ventures, entrepreneur Max Levchin, and earlier backers, including the Swiss investment firm Waypoint and Samchuly, a maker of bicycle parts that's headquartered in Korea.

Video games can't and shouldn't replace seeking professional help in these circumstances—and Gareth Dutton's 'The Problem with Using Video Games as Panacea for Mental Health Issues' 2016 article for (a pre-Waypoint) VICE is a very interesting exploration of this point.
On this episode of the fortnightly Waypoint UK Podcast, senior ed sort Mike Diver and regular co-conspirator Kate Gray are joined by Paul Kilduff-Taylor of Oxford's Mode 7 Games, to discuss the studio's forthcoming releases: Frozen Synapse 2 and Tokyo 42.

She's even assembled a ridiculously accurate model of the Normandy and a slew of classic game characters (as I previously covered here on Waypoint), all in a program ostensibly designed to spawn customized, cartoonish critters who dance at and/or eat each other.
We've had, for years upon years, stories and statistics proving all of this, decades of anonymous interviews with artists and coders desperate for something to change, from EA Spouse to the Rockstar Spouses, from The Guardian to Kotaku to here at Waypoint.

And yet — both Bains and Steven Leigh, of the Mid Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, agreed — it is a place trying to shake off the sense of being a waypoint, a place defined not by what it is, but by what it is near.
In 2016, when I joined VICE to launch what was then called Waypoint, I was regularly working 60 hour weeks, plus whatever I was putting into Friends at the Table, the actual play podcast that was at that point still just a hobby.
At this point, I've written and spoken about my love of the game a dozen times (hell, we announced that "VICE Gaming" was becoming "Waypoint" with a love letter to the game), so I don't need to waste words on praise here.

In a meaty 2-hour-long Waypoint Radio, Rob, Austin and Danielle get down to business talking about E3 Judges Week, slightly broken games that we love (like State of Decay 2 and STALKER), and the ARG Danielle fell all the way down last week.
So, when I went to our forums to ask for suggestions for the final Waypoint 101 of the year, I brought some requirements: After looking at a ton of great suggestions from y'all, we decided to go with Klei's 2012 Mark of the Ninja.
My personal reading of God of War informed the 2,000-something word review published on Waypoint, but it reflects a fixed moment in time, when I played through a very long game largely in isolation, left only to my own thoughts, impressions, and reactions.
Above: Illustration by Stephen Maurice Graham You've almost certainly seen the work of Belfast-based illustrator Stephen Maurice Graham on the pages of Waypoint—in addition to several article commissions, he's responsible for the artwork that adorns our social accounts (like Facebook, and Twitter).
Waypoint Editor-in-Chief Austin Walker, Managing Editor Danielle Riendeau, and yours truly huddled around the warmth of a microphone to discuss Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Watch Dogs 2, a tiny bit of Dishonored 2, and the politically-aware platformer Even the Ocean.

As this very smart piece above by our friends over at Waypoint elaborates on, the dynamics between white gun ownership and black gun ownership in America are worlds apart, as the former has historically used firearms as part of their ongoing oppression of the latter.
While my employer has changed plenty of times over the years—Giant Bomb to Kotaku to Waypoint, in the past three years—I've managed to stay connected with my most ardent fans because they have a way of keeping track of what I'm up to.
That's a core tenet of Waypoint, that representation and visibility are important, that it means a great deal to people to see themselves reflected in the media they are exposed to, be it fictional or, in the case of athletic contests, a real-life analogue.
Welcome to a bonus Waypoint UK Podcast, recorded live at London's EGX Rezzed show—a wonderful place where a plethora of indie video games, and their makers, come together with players to have three days of sharing, caring and, hopefully, just a little raving.
But, again, of course that's how Crew Expendable, which only lasts about 30 minutes if you're a scaredy cat like me, and significantly less if you bolt to each waypoint without too much caution (good luck with that), is always going to play out.
Not only can you make a (relatively) quick trip to check out Estacion Federal — the hip Tijuana commons its developer recently described as "part artistic community, part commuter waypoint and part gastro-utopia" — but you're also in a good position to check out El Jardín.
All week, Waypoint will be exploring how games intersect and engage with the carceral state through a collection of new articles and essays, key material from the archives, and a new documentary that picks up the thread of my favorite stories that we've published.

I know, it took a long time for Friday to arrive, and it'd be nice if Friday just gave you a heads up that it was going to be late, but look: Friday's here, and Friday means it's time for another episode of Waypoint Radio, too. See?
But there's one question I'd pose to you, readers of Waypoint, who have more game knowledge collectively than I ever will: If you started from scratch, tell me over on Waypoint's forums what kind of game library would you build for the remaining 41 detainees at Gitmo?
Like you  said in the Waypoint podcast a little while back, protagonist Marcus Holloway is a black man who doesn't have to stand in for all black people; by virtue of two central characters being black, we get to see a wider range of black life.
Offering a welcome waypoint between NoMan's Sky and the tantalizing promise of fall's packed release schedule, it had quite a few of us tweeting blurry pictures of our 3DS screens at one another, sharing tips, and subtweeting the hell out of our more troublesome fictional customers.
One reason I keep playing is because I want to recapture the same feeling, and I want to avoid the problem Waypoint writer Cameron Kunzelman hit with Baldur's Gate: World charmed and thrilled me for a long time, though, far longer than I could have ever anticipated.
" Mike Diver, Waypoint "I felt like something that I had never needed to feel inside wasn't there anymore; an unspoken connection to people that I always considered myself a part of, but here I was being told: nope, sorry, those French folk, we're done with them.
Perhaps to battle this situation and have more control over the market when it tanks, the largest single-family rental firms in the US, Invitation Homes and Starwood Waypoint Homes, are merging to form one giant landlord with 82,000 single-family homes, concentrated in the low tier.
The little piece in question, by regular Waypoint writer, Kiss and Tell columnist and UK Podcast guest extraordinaire Kate Gray, was more about getting people chatting away about the best (loads) and worst (not much at all) about Mario Kart 8, than it was a definitive statement.
In this episode of Waypoint Radio, Danielle, Patrick and Rob gather to talk about the piece, sexualized ladies in games, depictions of desirable bodies in games and movies, and what it means to reclaim a character for your own, whether they were intended for your demographic or not.

Throughout this week, we'll be giving out senior superlatives to our favorite games, digging into the year's biggest trends and stories (by way of the clubs, teams, and extracurriculars of Waypoint High), and we are following our favorite characters through their adventures together via original art… and fanfic. Yes.
As our friends at Waypoint astutely noted in their review, Far Cry 5's writing tries to capitalize on the fact that it takes place in America for the first time in the series while Donald Trump is president, but it fails to say anything meaningful about that.
As discussion swirled around how future embassies would build on this first iteration, the curators returned to the show's title as a philosophical waypoint, which is drawn from a paper by Jon Ippolito, "Death by Wall Label" that posits that for digital culture, staying put is tantamount to death.
Waypoint Leasing Holdings Ltd in a filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York said the bid it received from Macquarie Rotorcraft Leasing Holdings Ltd after a four-month marketing campaigns is its best available option for maximizing value for stakeholders and averting a potential piecemeal liquidation.

I'll have more fully formed thoughts on Friday's episode of Waypoint Radio, alongside a longer essay on how Capcom approached a remake/reboot/reimagining, but a few quick thoughts, since the review embargo just lifted: I'll save the rest for later this week, but there's so much to chew on.
I'm not the only one with lingering doubts about the future of E3 or the ESA, which is why on today's episode of Waypoint Radio, we dig into this topic (along with conversations about Anodyne 2, Rebel Galaxy Outlaw, Star Wars: Outer Rim, and (of course) more Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
Whether it's the hugely popular The Adventure Zone, the extensive list of Dungeons & Dragons streamers on Twitch, or even the Waypoint team roleplaying it up, it seems like there is a constant stream of content that you can find if you want to listen to people playing some kind of tabletop game.
The pilot is told by Gander which point to head towards, programs the ending waypoint into autopilot, and the rest is smooth sailing—all because Gander does the difficult organizational work of keeping the hundreds of planes making the crossing on non-intersecting tracks with at least 140 miles separating each plane.
For more, check out this excellent documentary about the game and its maker from our friends at Waypoint: I spent way too much time this year thinking about Gears of War 4 as part of my feature about the state of big budget games and why they're so hard to make in 2016.
Now, ten years later, the Waypoint gang has to work through their complicated feelings about the Slate Political Gabfest and, in particular, the worldview they bring to their work as expressed by their recent episodes on the passing of George H.W. Bush and the assault allegations against now-Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
We also find time to answer a handful of questions from Waypoint friends and readers (thanks for sending them over), consider how going ahead with Brexit will impact the British video games industry, and look ahead to the possibility of a return to Fighting Fantasy, as it celebrates its 35th anniversary in 2017.
Above: "The Killing of Bruiser Borody" from Dark Side of the RingOn a special bonus episode of Waypoint Radio, Austin Walker sits down with Evan Husney, producer and co-creator of Dark Side of the Ring, VICELAND's new docu-series that digs into the human stories behind six tragedies of wrestling history.
The Westborough, Massachusetts-based company is a leader in what's known as hyperconverged infrastructure for IT. In this case, the customer was Waypoint Capital, who, after using SimpliVity's infrastructure solution at five of its global sites — and being impressed with the results — decided to lead a $175 million round of financing last year.
Our demo—I play beside developer Moo Yu (who later guested on a bonus Waypoint Podcast, with his Foam Sword colleague Rex Crowle and Gang Beasts makers Boneloaf's James Brown)—leads us through a battered old amusement park to "the librarian", one of several islanders that need saving by our two heroes.
Waypoint met with experiential gaming collective Kokoromi to discuss the game's retro-future aesthetic and what's next for the world of VR. VICE Meets: Marina Abramović Nearing 70, Marina Abramović talked to us about building a career off of subversive performance and how she's still pushing boundaries, causing controversies, and influencing the youth.
On the first page, drone operators were asked to provide the following details about their mission: type of mission (out of six pre-set options that they could select, two indicated weaponized drone missions: 'Bombing' and 'Explosive Plane'), group members who were involved, location of the mission, and waypoint coordinates for the flight.
Phantom Dust may not be the easiest game to describe: it has roots in the competitive shooter genre, with collectable card game elements, and a very unique aesthetic—but it made a huge impression on Waypoint Editor-in-Chief Austin Walker, since it is one of his favorite games of all time.
But before a few days off arrive, it's time for another episode of Waypoint Radio, wherein Rob, Danielle, and myself discuss my article about Telltale's ongoing technical problems, the tiny details in video games that make us happy, and Danielle's love for Capcom's Disney Afternoon Collection, a wonderful tribute to the company's NES games.
The Cane and Rinse episode on the game repeated a sentiment I expressed on VICE Gaming, in the days before Waypoint, back in January 2015—that this game needs a reissue, a remaster, a remake, anything to get it back into player hands in a form that's easily acquired, outside of naughty-naughty emulation.
Waypoint is pleased to publish a chapter from the book here, focusing on the release and reception of hit mobile app Ridiculous Fishing—a game that emerged from the troubled waters of a cloning scandal—and moving into the development of the singularly styled shooter LUFTRAUSERS, a game that would go on to be a little controversial itself.
And from today's vantage point, the mix of mostly self-contained procedural stories and connect-the-dots mythology episodes makes it feel like a waypoint in the evolution of TV drama: Occasional viewers could enjoy the show's dry wit and honest-to-goodness scares, while more attentive fans were rewarded for their devotion via the overarching plot line.
The first episode is all about our Future of Technology Issue: Elizabeth Renstrom, our photo editor, explains how we made the cover image; author and investigative journalist Emily Witt helps us explore the world of virtual reality porn; guest editors from Motherboard, Waypoint, and the Creators Project host a roundtable discussion; and, of course, we have much more.
Watch more, from Waypoint: I'm purposefully skimming over a lot of the deeper, more particular mechanical aspects of both Hearthstone and Gwent here, so as to not confuse those who've not spent much time with the former, but are tempted to take the latter out for a hand or two, after enjoying it in The Witcher 3.
Waypoint EIC Austin Walker had an in-depth chat with the game's writer, Charles Webb, on the game's approach to race as a lens for players to view this character and this (admittedly pulpy, crime-thriller) world through: Interestingly, and effectively, the game actually makes systemic racism an actual mechanic in the world—one that directly impacts the gameplay.
"Whereas peasants and serfs were dispossessed of land and forced to urbanize and take up wage labor, internet users are being dispossessed of their time and attention, which are being enclosed through surveillance, then quantified and monetized," writes Dr. Daniel Joseph, a political economist (and Waypoint contributor) at the University of Toronto, who wrote his dissertation on Steam.
When I first spoke about my love of the criminally underappreciated Unexplored on Waypoint Radio a couple of weeks ago, I focused on its most novel aspects: Its ability to foreshadow what will happen in deeper depths of the game's dungeon; its unique, "cyclical" level generation, which alleviates the amount of backtracking you need to do; its simple, yet deliberate combat.
Listen to Austin discuss Frozen Synapse 2 on Monday's episode of Waypoint Radio: First of all, the church is a faction in its own right, one that will immediately cut their direct funding for you—up until you have a direct negative encounter with them, they'll hope that you'll go light on Sonata, and let it gather relics in peace.
To understand what it was like to build Vox Populi, and if there was any tension over a patch that implicitly criticizes Firaxis' design, I spoke with designers Cristoph and Jeff Grooms (Cristoph asked for his last name to be kept private.) (This interview has been lightly edited for length and clarity.) Waypoint: Why'd you originally fall in love with Civilization?
While the viewer still has some control issues, and the handling of pausing and playing is a little clunky, I have still been able to make some interesting documents of what it is like to play PUBG right now (if you're interested in talking about edited videos of PUBG, go check out the thread I made on the Waypoint forums).
Article continues after the video below Waypoint caught up with Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aimé at E3 2017 Which just serves to highlight, by contrast, just how lost Forces feels—neither here nor there in terms of which Sonic era it can hang onto, and failing fans of both the 2D and 3D games by coming across as just barely competent in each discipline.
None of these aspire to Naughty Dog levels graphical representation of their respective cities (real or fictional), but each has shown me sequences equally as cinematic, yet also offer me the ability to determine where and how to go about my set objectives (just listen to the most recent ep of Waypoint Radio at timestamp 42:00 for an example.)  To be clear, I'm not dissing Naughty Dog here.
Only five episodes of Doctor Who: The Adventure Games were ever made—four making up the first season, to accompany season five of the show, and only one episode was ever released from its second season, alongside the sixth season of TV. Watch more, on Waypoint: It's a shame because, in the end, the series turned out to be much more than just a video game tie-in.
The latest episode of the Waypoint UK Podcast—as always hosted by the site's senior editor Mike Diver (who is me, hello)—welcomes Laura Kate Dale of Let's Play Video Games and several freelance gigs and Julian Benson of Kotaku UK to go over what it takes to break news in the gaming industry, when publishers and PRs are doing whatever they can to keep information under wraps.
I spoke about the game briefly at the end of Monday's Waypoint Radio, but briefly: Sky Rogue is an arcade-y flight sim roguelite that feels like a blend of the Ace Combat series and Sega's arcade output in the mid 90s, and I don't just mean that it reminds me of Sega's Wing War in terms of lighting, visual design, and music (but you know, that too).
Waypoint: I've been watching you play this running, modded game of Fallout 4 (and now New Vegas ) for like eighteen months now, but I think I only wrapped my head around what you were fully doing a earlier this year: Through a combo of mods, you're playing the games as post-apocalyptic sandboxes, taking the role of random characters associated with factions, and with randomly rolled motivations/allegiances/moral codes.
It's a long interview, and we didn't cut much from it because A) Sean is an interesting speaker and B) We figured you would want to hear what Hello Games—well, Sean, specifically—has to say in their own words: Patrick Klepek (Senior Editor, Waypoint): You haven't really spoken publicly about the game since the launch and I'm curious what does it feel like to talk with us?
Discussed: Resident Evil 563 5:06, Outer Wilds 16:200, Kingdom Hearts III 21:227, Anthem 247:21, Greedfall 228:13, The Waypoint Tech Corner 21:245, Sekirio: Shadows Die Twice 229:01:25, Metro Exodus 1:19:, Ace Combat 7 1:453:09, Apex Legends 1:24:00, Slay the Spire 1:27:47, Eliza 1:28:56, Telling Lies 1:45:29 You can subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Google Play, and Stitcher.
Every few weeks we get a question in to Waypoint Radio from a player who can't quite leave the game worlds they love behind: Andy in Sweden felt heartbroken to leave behind his "virtual hunk of a husband, Iron Bull," while Mike in Glasgow noted that beating The Witcher 3's main quest made the world feel lifeless and empty, because all of the memorable characters of the game's story seemed to have vanished.
Article continues after the video below Watch: Waypoint speaks to Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aimé at E3 2017 But to leave them unstocked is to suffer in the field, as your town, your oasis in the middle of an otherwise pretty inhospitable desert, effectively has a happiness meter—and the higher that is, the more extra health points you (and your party of up to three) receive on leaving its sanctuary for exploration and combat.
I've put more time and energy into heavier lifts than a story like this—there's one I spent the better part of a year working on for Waypoint, only to watch it all fall apart in the most frustrating way possible—but you have to be prepared to cut losses and realize not every story pans out, or the answers you end up with might not be interesting to anyone but you, and sunk cost just not justify publishing.
One way or another, this election is almost over, which is why myself, Waypoint EIC Austin Walker, and Managing Editor Danielle Riendeau spent the opening minutes of this week's Monday podcast breathlessly talking about this… ...before we avoided talking about any of the "real" announcements at this weekend's BlizzCon—a Diablo remake coming to Diablo 3, the formal announcement of hacker character Sombra for Overwatch—and mulled what Blizzard's decision to embrace regional professional teams, ala the NFL or NBA, for Overwatch means.
