The recent announcement that water ice resides within the permanently shadowed craters of the lunar poles was a confirmation of something scientists have suspected since the 1960s.
Astronauts living there will likely need to harvest water ice from the area so they can break it down into oxygen (for breathing) and hydrogen (for fuel).
This relatively unexplored part of the Moon is particularly tantalizing to scientists, as there is evidence that this region may harbor a significant amount of water ice.
The RP would have sent a rover to one of the lunar poles to prospect for resources, including water ice, with a drill and an onboard laboratory.

These findings could explain a variety of puzzling geological features on the Red Planet, like why reservoirs of water ice on Mars are located far away from the planet's poles and why rivers formed where they did.
This conclusion was cemented in a study published last December in Nature, which analyzed visible wavelength data from Dawn's Framing Camera, and concluded that the spots are probably magnesium sulfate salt with a smattering of water ice.

Importantly, the water ice is only visible where the processes of erosion are taking place, and the researchers speculate that ice near the surface may be more abundant than what they were able to detect in this study.
"Assuming the planets are composed of water ice, rock, and iron, we determine how much of each might be present, and how thick the different layers would be," said PSI senior scientist Amy Barr said in a statement.

One of the studies in the suite of research released Thursday determined that grains of silicate and water ice and atoms in the rings collide, which allows them to fall out of orbit and plunge into the atmosphere.
The latest dispatch from the distant probe contains the first composition data about Pluto's four small satellites, and includes confirmation that Hydra is covered in pristine water ice, which explains why it is such a highly reflective world.
"The observation of spectral features of H2O confirms that water ice is trapped and accumulates in permanently shadowed regions of the Moon," the authors write in the paper published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
"Until now, meteoric smoke has been neglected in general circulation model studies of the formation of Martian water ice clouds," said the study's authors, who were led by Victoria Hartwick, a graduate student at the University of Colorado Boulder.
Essentially, this explanation works because there are two different types of ice that we're seeing here: The nitrogen ice that is the most commonly found ice on Pluto and then something a little more familiar to us, water ice.
Another interesting (though not completely surprising) observation, said Harrison, is that the closer a moon is to Enceladus, the bluer it is—likely the result of all the water ice and vapor spewing out from Enceladus' south polar geysers.
The cavi unit rests about 3303 kilometers (1.2 miles) beneath the Martian north pole, and prior to the new study, scientists figured it was primarily composed of sand dunes and contained less than 50 percent water ice by volume.
New research published in Science surmises that water ice exists on Mars at depths of around 3 to 6 feet (1 to 2 meters) below the surface, and extending across vast sheets measuring 325 feet (100 meters) or more.
The instrument's observations suggest that the water-ice is present in two different grain sizes, he added — those on the micrometer (one-millionth of a meter) scale, and those with an average size of about 2 millimeters (0.08 inches).
Then he turned to the county's eight multiagency "points of distribution" — known as PODs — which have been handing out free drinking water, ice, canned goods, hot meals, diapers, garbage bags, and the most coveted item of all, toilet paper.
"The distribution of water ice around a young star is fundamental to planet formation and even the development of life on Earth," Zhaohuan Zhu, an astronomer at Princeton University and a co-author on the new work, said in a statement.
One of the more well-known such tipping points is Arctic sea ice, which could disappear in the summer in just 15 years, according to the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme's Snow, Water, Ice and Permafrost in the Arctic report.
"Ceres has evidence of ammonia-bearing hydrated minerals, water ice, carbonates, salts, and now organic materials," Simone Marchi, a senior research scientist at Southwest Research Institute, and one of the authors of the paper published in Science, said in a statement.
Also known as night clouds, they're composed of crystals of water ice and are the highest clouds in Earth's atmosphere, but they can only be viewed when the sun is below the horizon but they are still in the sunlight.
"The study confirms the impact that the water ice particles being launched from the plumes of Enceladus has across the Saturn system," Tracy Becker, a planetary scientist at the Southwest Research Institute who wasn't involved with the new study, told Gizmodo.
With countries and companies jostling to set up operations in the moon's most desirable sites—mainly the lunar poles, where water ice is supposedly abundant—life up there could quickly devolve into a dusty and chaotic mess, ripe for human conflict.
The "No Soup for You" (gin, dry vermouth, veggie broth, sweet potato puree, lemon, celery biitters, and a tomato water ice cube) sounds more like a meal than a drink, and it admittedly tastes like cold, spiked Maruchan ramen broth.

"Since the confirmation of lunar water-ice ten years ago, the question now is if the Moon could really contain the amount of resources we need to live off-world," Daniel Andrews, the new mission's project manger, said in the release.
More than half of the scientific instruments it carried to the moon are safe on the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter, which will spend the next year mapping the lunar surface and studying the deposits of water ice at the south pole.
But Cassini also found that a colossal amount of organic molecules and water ice (on the order of 22,000 pounds per second) are falling onto the planet's Equator through a different, potentially transient process that could help hasten the rings' demise.
This finding — which is based on an analysis of the distribution of water ice near the lunar north and south poles — sheds light on the structure and evolution of the moon, and also provides clues about where Earth's water came from, researchers said.
So says a report "Snow, Water, Ice, Permafrost in the Arctic" (SWIPA), produced under the auspices of the Arctic Council, a scientific-policy club for the eight countries with territory in the Arctic Circle, as well as observers including China and India.
In the year since New Horizon's flyby, the spacecraft has revealed the tall water-ice mountains of Pluto, the world's blue sunsets and other data suggesting there might be a liquid ocean beneath Pluto's surface, which is fueling some of it's unexpected geology.
Scientists still aren't sure if Pluto owes its geologically active surface to some kind of ocean beneath its crust of water-ice, or the specific processes that produced its tall mountains, but New Horizons isn't done sending back its data to Earth.
Details: According to NASA, the clouds can be found about 19 miles high and are likely composed of water ice, making them similar in concept at least to cirrus clouds here on Earth, though those are typically found at about 6 miles up.
Robotic spacecraft dating back to the Clementine mission of the early 85033s and most recently the Indian Chandrayaan probes and the NASA Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter have found indications of water ice stored away in darkened recesses of craters at the moon's poles.

New Horizons scientists think that some of the dwarf planet's blocks of water ice are "floating in that large nitrogen ice reservoir called Sputnik Planum," New Horizons principal investigator Alan Stern said during a presentation at the American Astronomical Society annual meeting on Monday.
Multiple views of Serenity Chasma allowed NASA to create topographical maps of this expanse, and its features are consistent with this proposed geological process; measurements suggest that Charon's water ice layer was at least partially liquid in its early history, and has since refrozen.
The descent sequence will last about 15 minutes and will ideally end with a gentle landing between two lunar craters called Manzinus C and Simpelius N. The Moon's south pole is dappled by shadowy deposits of water ice, which makes it a tantalizing unexplored destination.
Though China has not shared a specific timeline for the rest of the mission, the robots' goals on the moon's far side are to take photos of the barren landscape, study lunar geology, look for water ice, and scan the night sky for radio bursts.

According to Zurek, who is an MRO project scientist but did not participate in the new study, the newly-identified sites with water-ice are in the higher latitudes of Mars, meaning that sunlight and temperatures in those areas go through extreme swings throughout the year.
"Our analyses will test a longstanding prediction that water ice can survive just beneath Ceres' cold, high-latitude surface for billions of years," said Tom Prettyman, the lead for Dawn's Gamma Ray and Neutron Detector and Dawn co-investigator at the Planetary Science Institute, in Tucson, Arizona.

Another $529 million is set aside for the "robotic exploration of Mars," including a return mission to bring a Martian soil sample back to Earth for the first time ever, and a mission that will involve mapping water ice near the surface of the planet for the use of eventual human explorers.
