Formic acid is obtained by aqueous catalytic partial oxidation of wet biomass. A Keggin- type polyoxometalate (H5PV2Mo10O40) is used as the homogeneous catalyst to convert sugars, wood, waste paper or cyanobacteria to formic acid and CO2 as the sole byproduct. Yields of up to 53% formic acid can be achieved. It is possible to convert water-insoluble biomass in a suspension with the catalyst.

The Bridge Inn One of the main focal points of the town is Topsham Pool. Topsham Pool is a community run project in the centre of the town. It was funded by a large fundraising exercise in the 1970s which included collecting waste paper and glass bottles, jumble sales and donations. This was part of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) program to provide locally made Makapads to women and girls throughout refugee camps in Uganda. The pads are made out of dry papyrus and mixed with waste paper and then stitched with non-woven absorbent pieces of cloth. This results in a large amount of recyclable waste, paper especially, being too soiled to reprocess, but has advantages as well: the city need not pay for a separate collection of recyclates and no public education is needed. Manufacture of paper with hemp as a raw material has shown that hemp lacks the qualities needed to become a major competitor to the traditional paper industry, which still uses wood or waste paper as raw material. Several manufactures claim up to 90% volume reduction of briquetted paper waste versus traditional shredding. Decreasing the volume of shredded waste allows it to be transported and stored more efficiently, reducing the cost and fuel required in the disposal process. In addition to the cost savings associated with reducing the volume of waste, paper briquettes are more useful in paper mills to create recycled paper than uncompressed shredded material.

In April 2017, Chinese Communist Party general secretary Xi Jinping in a speech during the 34th meeting of the Reform Enforcement Task Force emphasized the country's focus on environmental issues related to foreign "waste". China then notified the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 18 July 2017 that it intends to ban additional "solid waste" imports by year-end. This includes plastics waste, unsorted waste paper and waste textile materials. China also announced that the percentage of contaminants allowed in recycled materials would drop from 5–10% to 0.5%.

The Owl Club maintains a tradition of monthly dinners for members and their male guests; “black tie” is the customary plumage. J. W. Spear and Sons was a significant manufacturer of board games during the 20th century. The company was founded by Jacob Wolf Spier (1832-1893) in Fürth, near Nuremberg, Germany in 1879, producing goods such as table mats, photo frames, and waste-paper baskets. By the turn of the century, games had become the main product, and output gradually expanded until the company become one of the best-known international manufacturers of games and children's activity kits, employing up to 600 people. In 1932, they set up a factory in Brimsdown, Enfield, Britain to avoid customs duties.

With the escalation of the Sri Lankan Civil War during the 1990s in the Eastern province, then government implemented new changes in the market policies with regard to the import of paper. In the spring of 2004, while emptying a container of waste paper, the owner of a recycling company in Kerkrade, Netherlands found an extensive set of documents from the Dora Trials as well as original photographs of the initial liberation of Mittelbau-Dora and its auxiliary camps. It was not possible to identify how these documents came to be in the waste container. However, it is clear they were from the estate of William Aalmans, the Dutch citizen who served with the U.S. Army in the liberation of Mittelbau-Dora and then worked for the prosecution in the Dora Trial. The pocket-sized hardback Ladybird measured roughly four-and-a-half by seven inches (11.5 cm by 18 cm). The papyrus sanitary pad aims primarily to help make sanitary pads an affordable and accessible necessity for young girls in developing countries. They help tackle the problem of girls' absenteeism in school owing to menstruation and associated behaviours for which they do not have adequate facilities (for example: lack of privacy for cleaning, poor availability of pads, lack of education about menstrual hygiene, lack of separate toilet facilities, and lack of access to water). "Salvage Scrap to Blast the Jap" propaganda poster The Salvage for Victory campaign was a program launched by the US Federal Government in 1942 to salvage materials for the American war effort in World War II. On January 10, 1942, the US Office of Production Management sent pledge cards to retail stores asking them to participate in the effort by saving things like waste paper, scrap metal, old rags, and rubber. Later that month, the Bureau of Industrial Conservation of the War Production Board asked all American mayors to salvage the same kinds of materials from municipal dumps and incinerators. In New York City, the Department of Sanitation began picking up materials collected for the drive outside of homes and apartment buildings at 11:00 am Sunday mornings.

The old cider apple orchards are slowly disappearing, accelerated by the closure of the Cider Mill in the 1950s and the unrealistic price offered by modern apple juice and cider factories. Not far from the Church along the Mill Stream is the site of the old tannery, also used later as a cider mill, a waste paper reclamation works and now a modern housing estate. Next door is the old water grist mill, converted to a private house in the late 1960s, and the ancient Gatehouse, a fine 14th-century stone-built house, named after a family of linen weavers. On Ham Street a commercial business was built on the legendary site of the birthplace of St Dunstan in 909AD, to whom the Church is dedicated, later to become abbot of Glastonbury and Archbishop of Canterbury.

Ernest Lendrum, a self-made successful businessman Ernest Samuel Soames Ledrum, born in London 1876, became a self-made man in his twenties creating Lendrum & Co, a successful waste-paper business, 3 Temple Avenue EC4 and Frederick Hartman, son of a wealthy Anglo-German industrialist, partner in Suter Hartmann, now a stockbroker invalided out of the Royal Naval Air Service met in 1917 at a City of London function,made a Freeman of the City of London by the Company of Stationers, 18 Sep 1917 struck up a friendship realising a mutual interest in motor cars.Maud Coleno's Daughter, The Life of Dorothy Hartman 1898-1957, John Dann, Troubador, 2017, page 180 They recognised the sales opportunities there would be after the First World War, particularly American cars, as the whole of British industry had been devoted to the war effort. In May 1919 they travelled to New York to secure a deal with General Motors. Their initiative was successful.

Koops was born in Pomerania, the son of Matthias and Katherina Dorothea Koops. By 1789 he had emigrated to England, for he leased a house in Edmonton, London, that year. In 1790 married Elizabethe Jane Austen at St Marylebone Parish Church. He was naturalized on 1 April 1790. From 1800-1801, Koops operated the Neckinger Mill in Bermondsey, London, where he experimented with making paper from straw, hay, wood pulp, recycled paper, and other items, without the necessity of cloth.

In 1977 the club joined the Northern Alliance, winning back-to-back championships in their first two seasons in the league, also winning the League Cup in their first season. Although they only finished fourth in 1979–80, the club entered the FA Cup for the first time, and reached the first round. Drawn at home to Bradford City, the match was moved to Spennymoor United's ground, with Bradford winning 3–0.

In the Damon Runyon short story, ‘Romance in the Roaring Forties’, Nick the Greek is mentioned by name, as a guest at the Prohibition-era New York wedding of Miss Billy Perry. Other guests are Waldo Winchester (a thinly-disguised Walter Winchell), Skeets Boliver, Feet Samuels, and Good Time Charley Bernstein, showing Nick as part of the louche guys-and-dolls culture of Broadway in the Roaring Twenties. He also appears in Runyon’s short story “Blood Pressure”, playing at Nathan Detroit’s floating crap game in New York. The unnamed narrator has been dragged into the game by a gangster, and notes that it is more than somewhat full of very tough guys indeed, there with some of the towns highest rollers: “...there they are wedged up against the table with Nick the Greek, Big Nig, Grey John, Okay Okun, and many other high shots, and they all have big coarse G notes [thousand dollar bills] in their hands which they are tossing around back and forth as if these G notes are nothing but pieces of waste paper”. A brief appearance is made by Nick at a party in Runyon’s short story “Madame La Gimp”, where he impersonates Heywood Broun.
