La Chingada is a town in the municipality of Perote in the Mexican state of Veracruz. The place is famous for its name, the Mexican Spanish vulgarism La Chingada. It means, roughly, 'the fucked', a vulgar but common reference to La Malinche, the Indian mistress of Hernán Cortés, the Spanish conquistador who conquered Mexico. Les Onze Mille Verges ou les Amours d'un hospodar is a pornographic novel by French author Guillaume Apollinaire, published in 1907 over his initials "G.A.". The title contains a play on the Catholic veneration of the "Eleven thousand Virgins" (French: les onze mille vierges), the martyred companions of Saint Ursula, replacing the word vierge (virgin) with verge (rod) due to a slip of the tongue by the protagonist and as an omen of his fate. On July 24, 2018, MetalSucks reported on a 2017 Facebook post belonging to the Pestilence vocalist and guitarist Patrick Mameli. In the post they alleged that Patrick Mameli, on his personal Facebook page, response to a photo of him with blonde dreadlocks, responding to a comment that compared his look to Milli Vanilli with the statement in his native Dutch, "Je zegt dat ik een neger ben?" The site alleged that the use of "neger" translated to English as the discriminating vulgarism nigger. Along with the comment, MetalSucks also alleged that the singer also "propagates Jewish stereotypes", pointing to his support of United States President Donald J. Trump moving the nations embassy in Israel.

"The Fappening" is a jocular portmanteau coined by combining the words "happening" and "fap", an internet slang term for masturbation. Though the term is a vulgarism originating either with the imageboards where the pictures were initially posted or Reddit, it didn't take long before the event was referred to by this name even in respected media such as the BBC. The term has received criticism from journalists like Radhika Sanghani of The Daily Telegraph and Toyin Owoseje of the International Business Times, who said that the term not only trivialized the leak, but also, according to Sanghani, "[made] light of a very severe situation"; both articles used the term extensively to describe the event, including in the headlines.
