It's so easy to cross the line from being a dark story filled with despair so that we might better understand the parts of ourselves that could lead us to do awful things (or better understand how we might cope with others doing awful things to us), and being a dark story that wallows in despair in a way that becomes sordid and unappetizing — especially because that line will be different for every single viewer.

An entree of double-cooked chicken thighs, however — which my husband ordered seasoned with garlic, ginger and scallions — was both undersized and overcooked; a vegetarian dish of Szechuan-spiced yu choy (a leafy green, akin to bok choy) was made squishy and unappetizing by the addition of soft, mochi-style rice cakes; and a wonderfully fiery stir-fried udon noodle dish, sauced with Korean chili paste, was nearly ruined by the tough chewiness of its main ingredient, baby octopus.
