If your digital identity included available biometrics from your mobile device — iris- or thumbprint-recognition, as examples, so that only they could unlock your phone while also being cross-referenced with your bank account, phone number and other personal information — then you'd have a very large-scale, very strong digital identity that you could use for all sorts of things, easily and securely.

Unlike most of Apple's other devices, the Apple Watch doesn't currently have any sort of built-in biometrics for unlocking — there's no thumbprint sensor for Touch ID, or camera for Face ID. Unlocking your Apple Watch means poking at the screen to punch in a PIN (or, if you've configured it to unlock when you unlock your phone, doing that).

On the one hand, watching you enter your smartphone PIN at a coffee shop is a lot easier for a would-be thief to do than build a working replica of your thumbprint; but on the other hand, your fingerprints, voice, iris and other biometrics are all vulnerable to being spoofed to some extent, and can't ever be changed in the event of a breach.

With guests agreeing at the outset to "practice consent and ask before touching people or things" — this is in the contract written on a wooden pillar that each person signs with a candy-colored thumbprint — it felt like a safe space in the least rigid sense of the term: a place where the agenda was the joyous freedom to be yourself, whatever pronouns you use.

This sounds like a minor thing, but one of my main uses for Google Pay is tapping my way through the London Underground's ticket barriers to pay my fare, and in a crowded ticket hall I want to be able to keep my eyes on where I'm going rather than making eye-contact with my phone's face-scanning biometric security, or looking for the specific part of the screen that's able to scan my thumbprint.
