"The vulnerability of SS7 is a sincere threat to communications privacy and it is extremely irresponsible of CTIA to claim otherwise," Cooper Quintin, a security researcher and technologist at the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), told Motherboard in an email.
"You would think they would be interested in feedback from a more diverse set of stakeholders even before releasing the draft text, but here we are," said Joseph Lorenzo Hall, Chief Technologist at the Center for Democracy and Technology.

"It's something that people are starting to get more aware of and have better tools to handle, so naturally we are seeing the attacks are going to evolve," said Hannah Quay-de la Vallee, a senior technologist at the Center for Democracy and Technology.
"While the thrusters of a normal underwater remote-operated vehicle can jet-blast delicate algaes off the bottom of ice sheets during close encounters, Bruie gently tiptoes beneath them," said Daniel Arthur, a technologist who works with Caltech and the University of Western Australia.

Eventually, however, he realized he didn't need to make a choice, the 29-year-old told CNBC Make It. By embracing all of his interests he could truly grow as an artist and a technologist, allowing his office job and his side gig to fuel one another.
"Defense lawyers who are working on these cases are looking to see what others are doing, and if a strategy looks like it's working, they're going to copy it," Christopher Soghoian, principal technologist at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) told Motherboard in an encrypted phone call.
"We are witnessing the widest, most sophisticated, and dangerous phishing and spearphishing campaign against independent human rights groups and activists in Egypt," Ramy Raoof, the senior research technologist at Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR), one of the targeted organizations, told Motherboard in an online chat.
And all of this is on top of their "real" jobs: Ashley is a radiology technologist; Aneesha and Alexis are college students; Alex is a nursing student working as a nurse assistant; and Emily is a grad student who works with autistic students at an elementary school.
"There are many Telegram users who think they are communicating in an encrypted way, when they're not because they don't realize that they have to turn on an additional setting," Christopher Soghoian, Principal Technologist and Senior Policy Analyst at the American Civil Liberties Union, told Gizmodo.
Uber's former chief executive Travis Kalanick and Anthony Levandowski, the incredibly talented and incredibly ambitious technologist whose decision to leave Google's self-driving car program for Uber set off the lawsuit in the first place, both came out of the proceedings looking appropriately terrible (they acted terribly).
Sydney Li, staff technologist at activist group the Electronic Frontier Foundation, said in an email that if HTTPS stops working because a browser blocks the certificate, the easy thing to do for users would be to switch to a browser where the certificate is still allowed.
"The industry has realized that all of these guys are a pretty big threat and nation-states are turning more toward using these private industry third-party hacking solutions than rolling out their own program from scratch," said Cooper Quintin, a technologist at the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
Here, CNBC takes a look at which sectors of society are likely to be affected from VR. VR devices could be used to simulate training scenarios for doctors and first aid responders, according to Karl Woolley, creative technologist and VR lead at visual effects company Framestore.
There's a simple explanation why the agencies don't seem to be working together, said Chris Soghoian, the ACLU's lead privacy technologist: Because the government's true goal isn't unlocking the shooter's phone, but establishing a legal precedent for compelling companies like Apple to hack their own products.
" Or, as the technologist at the Center for Democracy and Technology Joseph Lorenzo Hall put it, "if people are concerned about the confidentiality and integrity of their communications, they will have to treat the internet at large as a hostile network over which one must tunnel securely.
"Journalists, human rights defenders, environment campaigners and civil society activists working on any number of sensitive issues can quickly find themselves targeted by well-resourced and highly capable adversaries," said Andrew Ford Lyons, a technologist at Internews, a nonprofit organization that focuses on international media issues.

If Trump or his aides insist on carrying commercial-grade phones, they should never be taken into high-level meetings, since there are known exploits that can power on the device's microphone, Tom Lowenthal, a digital security technologist at the Committee to Protect Journalists, told Recode.
"Something like this would not have been technologically possible a year ago but now with some of the recent advances in AR the phone has the ability to recognize vertical surfaces and images and react accordingly," Brendan Ciecko, a technologist at Cuseum told Motherboard over the phone.

"By and large you get very little constitutional protection for data housed by third parties, and that's mostly a result of a Supreme Court case from the 1960s — before email, before search engines, before social networks," said Chris Soghoian, the principal technologist at the American Civil Liberties Union.

"Essentially, they built an 'auto-pilot' system that would launch Chrome and use it [to] automatically submit the login details phished from the user to the targeted service, including two-step verification codes sent for example via SMS," said Claudio Guarnieri, a technologist at Amnesty, in a tweet.
Researcher and technologist Aviv Ovadya, one of the first to identify the fake news catastrophe in early 2016, tells Buzzfeed he is worried about an "Information Apocalypse," which could lead to "reality apathy," or people just giving up on finding the truth because it is too indistinguishable from misinformation.
"There's a great deal of pressure by Congress to do something and the issue is that the agency is somewhat limited in their enforcement authority, particularly around the ability to extract a large fine," said Ashkan Soltani, a former chief technologist for the FTC under the Obama administration.
"The attacks have been coming irregularly throughout the year, and have always been complemented with direct conversations with the targets," said Claudio Guarnieri, Amnesty International's senior technologist and a senior researcher at the University of Toronto's Citizen Lab, which traces state hacking against dissidents, journalists and other civilian targets.
"HTTPS provides confidentiality (traffic is unintelligible to those without [encryption] keys) and integrity (traffic is verified when it arrives at its destination as being the same traffic that was sent)," Joseph Hall, the chief technologist with the Center for Democracy and Technology, told Motherboard in an online chat.
Joseph Lorenzo Hall, chief technologist at the Center for Democracy and Technology, told Politico that the government appears to want to "protect the periphery of the country from threats externally, but there's a really horrible track record interpreting...comments on social media, and interpreting them as meaning grave threats."

Joseph Lorenzo Hall, chief technologist at the nonprofit Center for Democracy and Technology, said the suspension reflected a need for Twitter to be more transparent about its ability to control accounts but also demonstrated the perils of a head of state relying on digital technology as a primary mode of communication.
The routing information was analyzed by American Civil Liberties Union staff technologist Daniel Gillmor and Citizen Lab researcher Bill Marczak, who both agreed that a system-wide email scanning system in the US could have captured the content of the Rogers email, despite it being sent and received within Canada.
Emanuel Cleaver mentioned how previous research has revealed inaccuracies and bias in facial recognition tech — such as a 2012 study coauthored by an FBI technologist that found facial recognition algorithms used by police in California, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and elsewhere consistently performed 5–10% worse for African Americans than for Caucasians.
