Thelma, Rhyme's personal carer and nurse, reveals to Amelia that he intends to euthanise himself out of fear of seizures that could leave him in a vegetative state. After piecing together the message the killer was sending using the scrap paper left at each scene, Amelia and Rhyme are led to an old crime novel called The Bone Collector, where it is revealed the killer is replicating the crimes from the fictional story. This leads them to the killer’s next victims, a grandfather and granddaughter who have been tied to a pier during a rise in tide.

The Woody Guthrie foundation has preserved scraps of over 3,000 lyrics that Guthrie handwrote in notebooks and on scrap paper New Multitudes is one of several tribute albums for American folk singer- songwriter Woody Guthrie. Guthrie died in 1967 after an extended battle with Huntington's disease, but his abbreviated career helped to inspire innumerable musicians during his lifetime as well as in the 1960s folk revival movement. Initially, this project was announced as a Farrar solo album with Johnson as a contributor. It was intended to follow previous efforts to elaborate on the archives of the Foundation by Billy Bragg and Wilco with the albums Mermaid Avenue (1998) and Mermaid Avenue Vol. II (2000), Blackfire's Woody Guthrie Singles (2003), Jonatha Brooke's The Works (2008), and the various artists compilation Note of Hope: A Celebration of Woody Guthrie (2011).

Despite Craig's initial dismay, Doe proved himself to be a fantastic typist (over 100 words-a-minute), and actually pushed Craig to quit his memoirs and write a novel instead (part of which he found on scrap paper). However, Doe began to copy Craig's persona, even wrapping his hand in bandages, wearing surgical scrubs and drawing a mustache with permanent marker (to match Craig's mustache).

They are, respectively, a small phrase which ends the document (and has a few possibilities for translation, given below), a piece of scrap paper unrelated to the body of the document, used to hold it together (yet containing words and Egyptian fractions which are by now familiar to a reader of the document), and a small historical note which is thought to have been written some time after the completion of the body of the papyrus's writing.

The Supreme Court of Virginia held that labor and services and the unauthorized use of the University's computer cannot be construed to be subject of larceny. The Court reasoned that labor or services cannot be the subject of the crime of larceny because neither time nor services may be taken or carried away, and that the unauthorized use of the computer could not be the subject of larceny, because "Nowhere in Code §§ 18.1-100[…] do we find the word 'use'." On the subject of the "stolen" items, the Commonwealth argued that the printouts and the computer cards had as much market value as scrap paper: "The cost of producing the print-outs is not the proper criterion of value for the purpose here. Where there is no market value of an article that has been stolen, the better rule is that its actual value should be proved..." The judgment and indictment of the trial court was reversed based on lack of evidence to convict the defendant of grand larceny under Code §18.1-100 or § 18.1-118.
