Gervais began his stand-up career in the late 1990s; his first successful show took place at the Cafe Royal, as part of the 2001 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Titled Rubbernecker, the show also featured Jimmy Carr, Robin Ince and Stephen Merchant. Gervais later toured the UK in 2003 with his stand-up show Animals. The Politics tour followed a year later.

The pilot episode aired on 12 April 2012 on Channel 4. Filmed in a mockumentary style, the programming is set mostly in a nursing home, and centres on Derek, a helper at the home. The title character made his first appearance in the 2001 Edinburgh Fringe show Rubbernecker, and appears briefly in his Science tour of 2010. In this show, Gervais bemoans the harassment he suffers at the hands of autograph-hunters, adopting a 'Derek- like' persona before denouncing 'them' as genetically inferior and 'a gaggle of mongs'.

In 1990, Ince first appeared at Greyfriars Kirkhouse at the Edinburgh Festival where Eddie Izzard was running a venue. At the time Ince was performing in a play called 'Shadow Walker' by Trevor Maynard.Robin Ince in "Shadow Walker", reviewed in "The Stage" 23 August 1990 He had appeared at the Cafe Royal as part of the Edinburgh Fringe show 'Rubbernecker', alongside Stephen Merchant, Jimmy Carr and Ricky Gervais in 2001. As a close friend of Ricky Gervais, Ince opened as a support act for his Politics tour in 2004 and his Fame tour in 2007.

Rubbernecker is a reality television show that is hosted by Richard Alexander, currently broadcasting on Nuts TV, the Freeview/cable/satellite channel in the UK, operated by Turner Broadcasting. It features a variety of genres of reality clips, such as extreme sports accidents, world record attempts, bizarre TV commercials, CCTV footage featuring employees caught on camera in the office, user generated content, and news-style reports of unusual events and people from around the world. With a somewhat left field and playful approach to its subjects or featured articles, it has two distinct versions : pre-Watershed (television) and an Uncut version for post-Watershed (television).

Over the past few years, Alexander has appeared in various programmes on both terrestrial and satellite TV. At present, he is featured on a show called BRAZEN; an eclectic mix of professionally shot reality TV, and more amateur-style footage, along with animated satire and parody. The animations featured in the show are aimed at deriding reality TV, whilst the live-action footage purports to promote the concept. Another show, called Rubbernecker (broadcast on Nuts TV in the UK) features him as the narrator/host. Alexander is well known for his work with Men and Motors, a digital channel in the UK operated by ITV plc, having appeared in over 150 shows on their channel in the last 5 years.

'Rafael Barajas Durán, better known by his pen name ' ("The Rubbernecker" or "The Peeper" in Spanish) is a Mexican cartoonist and illustrator who received the 1999 National Journalism Prize of Mexico for Editorial Cartooning. The son of a schoolteacher and a psychoanalyst, Barajas was born on 1 January 1956 in Mexico City and graduated from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in 1978 with a bachelor's degree in Architecture. At the age of 20 he decided to become a cartoonist and eventually sent collaborations to the Sunday supplement of Unomásuno (1981–1984), designed covers for Nexos magazine (1984–1986) and received a Guggenheim Fellowship (2003) to study dissenting political cartoonists in Mexico who worked between 1872 and 1910. According to himself, Barajas is also a committed leftist activist who has led campaigns to support the Zapatista rebels in Chiapas and regularly promote student involvement in politics.
