Vernes became a close friend of Voltaire, who called him his "dear priest" and he often visited Voltaire at Ferney. To Voltaire, Vernes's Calvinism seemed no more than nominal. In December 1761 Voltaire sent him a copy of his "Sermon du rabbin Akib", a scathing attack on Christian persecution of the Jews. The appointment of Norman O. Brown as Professor of Humanities in 1968 was in part intended to address some of these concerns. The first graduate student in History of Consciousness was Harvey Rabbin. Perhaps the best-known graduate of the program is Huey P. Newton, co-founder of the Black Panther Party.

René Gutman grows up in the town of Rouen, where his father Alexandre Gutman was the local rabbi. He spent several years in Israel, dedicating himself to religious studies, at the Yeshiva of Tifra'h ישיבת תושיה, in the Negev, and after then in 'Hebron' (Slabodka yeshiva) in Jerusalem. He learns rabbinic studies at the French Jewish Seminar in Paris, and meanwhile he starts his academic studies in the university. He graduated Rabbi in 1977, by winning the Grand Rabbin Lieber grant (1974) and the André Weil grant, three consecutive years.

Rabbin Yomtob Kalfon Rabbi Yomtob Kalfon (1899-1977) served as the spiritual leader, officiating minister and administrator of the synagogue from 1927 until his death. The Rabbi, a member of the Jewish community of Tunis was known for his Erudition as well as his engagement with the larger community, especially on social action issues (as the head of several local charities). The rabbi continued the work of Chief Rabbi Haïm Bellaïche at Yechiba Hebrat Atalmud, located in Bellaiche's former home at 4 Rue de Cologne in Tunis. A synagogue still exists there to this day.
