"I don't really use the term satellite, but if the shoe fits, cool," says founder Karen Schaupeter, who has also been an exhibitor herself at the Printed Matter New York and Los Angeles Art Book Fairs, as well as NADA in New York.

Mr. Cane, who founded an art zine, "They Shoot Homos Don't They?" in 2005 in Australia, moved to New York in 2008 at the urging of AA Bronson, the artist and president of Printed Matter at the time, who founded the organization's book fair in 2005 in New York.

As Printed Matter plots its return to LA in 2019, Hyperallergic spoke to the nonprofit's executive director, Max Schumann, about how it will maintain a presence in the city in the meantime and what distinguishes its East Coast and West Coast fairs from each other, and from conventional art fairs.
Throughout his 21985-year career at the library — including two decades as the first chief librarian of the Wallach Division, which combined the library's vast holdings in art, prints and photographs — Mr. Rainwater worked on acquisitions, exhibitions and public programs, including a series of interviews with artists organized with Printed Matter.
The nonprofit art bookstore Printed Matter has been around since 1976, when a group of artists, publishers and writers (including Sol LeWitt, Lucy R. Lippard and Ingrid Sischy) opened its first iteration on Lispenard Street in TriBeCa; its claim to fame was turning book publishing into its own form of art.
When Ingrid Sischy, the director of Printed Matter, took over as editor of Artforum in 1979, she saw a kindred spirit in Ms. DeAk, who had contributed gallery reviews to the magazine for several years — someone who blurred the boundaries between art, fashion and night life and practiced art criticism as theater.
Winant's 2018 installation Lesbian Lands, and her recent book published by Printed Matter, Notes on Fundamental Joy; seeking the elimination of oppression through the social and political transformation of the patriarchy that otherwise threatens to bury us, honor Oregon's self-titled "land-dykes" and their contributions to the history of feminist photography.
Organized by Colm Toibin, the novelist, and Declan Kiely, head of the Morgan's literary and historical manuscripts department, the show is a cross-disciplinary jumble of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, printed matter and manuscripts, with no single form dominant and with James himself as a kind of multiport power plug at the center.
Highlights include "Under the Sun," an interactive space for children and families presented by Printed Matter and Wide Rainbow, a New York-based nonprofit after-school art program, and an informal series of talks and screenings titled "The Classroom" from Paul and Damon McCarthy, George Herms and Sarah Bancroft, and many others.

Many of the exhibitors at Acid-Free have participated in the Printed Matter LA Art Book Fair, which this year, to the dismay of many, was canceled "because of the profound impact of [Michael Cane] Shannon's passing" —  a central member of Printed Matter's staff — and because their usual venue, the Geffen Contemporary, was unavailable.
