The restaurant name originates from two Old English words, piggin, a lead mug, and wassail, a wine drunk during yuletide.

Evangelicalism arrived from Britain as an already mature movement characterized by commonly shared attitudes toward doctrine, spiritual life, and sacred history.

Lee moved to the USA, where he served as a minister in the Presbyterian Church in America, as Professor of Philosophy at Shelton College, New Jersey and as Academic Dean of Graham Bible College in Bristol, Tennessee. Lee then moved to Australia, where he served as Professor at the Presbyterian Church of Queensland Theological Hall. Stuart Piggin notes that Lee "exuberantly led the resurgence of Reformed theology among Queensland Presbyterians." Lee was a firm advocate of the historicist method of interpretation in Christian eschatology.

Traditional bark pots were described as resembling a witch's cauldron, while later workers used a kerosene drum which was cut in half; a flour barrel tub, puncheon, or piggin would be used for dipping out the bark solution. The process of barking was described by A.F. O'Brien of Cape Broyle, circa 1964; > When the trap has been mended, it must be barked. The trap is boiled to help > preserve the twine. Cragin made a specialty type measure called a "piggin", which was a small wooden pail with a handle formed by continuing one of the staves above the rim. The wooden dipping pail was used for dyes in southern textile factories. Before the time electricity was readily available, the mill supplemented its needs with an 1871 one-cylinder steam engine for additional heat, to operate the kilns, and for additional energy for the steam vats. The antique engine is still at the premises of the mill.

For much of its history, a main feature of Ridley College was its residential college, with students accommodated mainly in the Aiken and Baker buildings. Like other residential colleges in the area, it provided its students with a range of academic, social and religious programs. From 1965 to 2005, Ridley was an affiliated residential college of the University of Melbourne and, in 1972, it became the first of the university's colleges open to both men and women.

The show used "pseudo-profanity". Like the later show Porridge, its characters would be expected to swear frequently, but at the time most swear words were forbidden in scripts, especially sitcoms. The characters frequently used the word "piggin'" and the phrase "bog off", as an all purpose substitute for swearing, just as characters in Porridge used the word "naff". There was almost more controversy over this than over actual swearing, with accusations of cowardice on the one hand, and complaints about the "made up" swear words on the other.

Progeny of top Thoroughbred stallions such as Piggin String, Depth Charge, Spotted Bull, and Three Bars began to dominate in Quarter Horse racing in the mid-to-late 1940s, and then moved into AQHA show competitions. A decade after Lightning Bar was one of the first half-breds to make a name for himself, Eternal Sun "raised the bar for all of the two-way race and show hopefuls that followed". Eternal Sun was a 1958 Sorrel stallion sired by Eternal War and out of Sierra Glitter by Silver King. He was registered as an American Quarter Horse.
