Although these are not the only factors used to determine quality, the size and wholeness of the leaves will have the greatest influence on the taste, clarity, and brewing time of the tea. When used outside the context of black- tea grading, the term "pekoe" (or, occasionally, orange pekoe) describes the unopened terminal leaf bud (tips) in tea flushes. As such, the phrases "a bud and a leaf" or "a bud and two leaves" are used to describe the "leafiness" of a flush; they are also used interchangeably with pekoe and a leaf or pekoe and two leaves.

Sir Thomas Lipton, the 19th-century British tea magnate, is widely credited with popularizing, if not inventing, the term "orange pekoe", which seems to have no Chinese precedent, for Western markets. These lower grades include fannings and dust, which are tiny remnants created in the sorting and crushing processes. Orange pekoe is referred to as "OP". Between December 2007 and August 2010, Hinoue was one of three personalities (the others being Shinji Orito and another named woman from Pekoe named Chiro) on an Internet radio show sponsored by Key in regards to the brand called Key Net Radio. Hinoue worked on Key's ninth game Rewrite by heading the project's planning, and acting as the sole art director and character designer.

Byrne took the phrase "Luaka Bop" from the inner packaging of a specialty tea which is sold in England. Luaka is the name of a tea importer. Orange Pekoe has released seven original albums not only in Japan but also in many other countries in Asia. In 2009, they were invited to the festival in New York “Japan Day at Central Park in NYC” sponsored by Japanese Consulate General. They also performed in many festivals in other countries such as Hua Hin Jazz Festival in Thailand, JGTC Festival in Indonesia, and “ A Day Trip to Tokyo” in Taiwan. Their performance style varies from a duo to a band, sometimes playing alongside a 16 members big band style orchestra, which they received renown as one of the most unique and talented artist in Japan.

An additional account (referencing a period-era Journal of Commerce article) dates the blend to 1843 and a tea merchant named Richard Davies in New York City. Davies, an English immigrant, started with a base of Congou and added a bit of Pekoe and Pouchong. It sold for 50 cents per (equivalent to $ per pound in ), and its success led to imitators, helping to popularize the name. An investigation to find the original Journal of Commerce article failed to locate it but did come upon an earlier reference to the same story in an 1876 edition of the Daily Alta California, citing "a New York commercial journal" and dating the tea's origin to 1844.

Black tea is first withered to induce protein breakdown and reduce water content (68–77% of original). The leaves then undergo a process known in the industry as disruption or leaf maceration, which through bruising or cutting disrupts leaf cell structures, releasing the leaf juices and enzymes that activate oxidation. The oxidation process takes between 45–90 minutes to 3 hours and is done at high humidity between 20–30°C, transforming much of the catechins of the leaves into complex tannin. Orthodox processed black teas are further graded according to the post-production leaf quality by the Orange Pekoe system, while crush, tear, curl (CTC) teas use a different grading system.

In Canada, various types of tea are used by many different indigenous tribes as healing and ceremonial medicines. For example, Ojibwe and Cree tribes in Ontario use Cedar Tea during sweat lodge ceremonies to cleanse and nourish their bodies. When European settlers arrived on North American shores, it was the indigenous people that taught them to make pine needle tea to help cure their scurvy; pine needles are a great source of vitamin C. Tea remains a popular hot drink among Canadians of European (especially British and Irish) heritage. Black orange pekoe tea and other breakfast style teas may be drunk with the morning meal or as a part of a mid-morning or afternoon break.

Key Net Radio was hosted by three people: Shinji Orito, a signature musical composer and co-founder of Key; Itaru Hinoue, a signature art director, character designer, and co-founder of Key; and another woman named Chiro from the visual novel studio Pekoe, also under VisualArt's. The greeting was used by the hosts to address the listeners, and was also used by the listeners as an opening greeting in submissions. For the first six episodes, the show had five corners, or parts, but from the seventh broadcast on two more corners were added to the program. When the show had five corners, each episode started with opening greetings from the hosts and went on to thoughts and impressions that listeners had about the show.

In 2004, Orange Pekoe released the live performance DVD which was filmed at NHK Hall on the last day of their national live tour. The duo have also pursued solo careers. Kazuma is known for his unique instrumental music inspired by nature, and his works and unconventional live performances have been highly acclaimed as the representation of the whole new establishment in chamber jazz music scene in Tokyo. He has collaborated with many musicians from all over the world, including domestic artists, but especially with South American musicians such as Toninho Horta (Brazil), Flavio Venturini (Brazil), Carlos Aguirre (Argentina), Andre Mehmari (Brazil), Antonio Loureiro (Brazil), Silvia Iriondo (Argentina), and many more. Tomoko has released her first solo album as “Nia” in 2014 from Atlantic Records (US).

European merchants began purchasing tea in Canton (Guangzhou) during the 17th century. Because green tea formed the bulk of their imports, and because the Wuyi region was initially the main source of the darker teas available to them, the term "Bohea" (based on the local Min Chinese pronunciation of "Wuyi") became a blanket name in English for all dark teas; the modern designations "black" and "oolong" were not yet in use. Over time, distinctions began to be made between different dark teas. Lapsang souchong, a Wuyi tea and possibly the first black tea to be produced, was separately traded as "Souchong" for a higher price, while the highest quality black tea was given the name "Pekoe" (), referring to the downy white hair on the young leaves).

What is today known as white tea may have come into creation in the last two centuries; scholars and tea merchants generally disagree as to when the first production of white tea (as it is understood in China today) began. White tea may have first appeared in English publication in 1876, where it was categorized as a black tea, because the leaves are not steamed first as in the making of green tea in order to denature intrinsic oxidative enzymes. White tea is often being sold as Silvery Tip Pekoe, a form of its traditional name, and now also under the simple designations China White and Fujian White. Some tea from the related wild Camellia taliensis in Yunnan is made using white tea processing techniques.

He joined Pekoe Orange in 1978 but shortly after that auditioned for Steve Hackett's new touring band, which he subsequently joined, recording the studio albums Spectral Mornings and Defector. Millstream Recording Studio was the first customer for an SL 4000 A Series Solid State Logic console (serial number 4KA010). In 1980 Cadbury and Decameron lyricist Dave Bell formed the jingle company Orijingles and a retro pub band The Teenage Idols to showcase their songwriting talents, and in 1983 teamed up with former Manfred Mann singer Mike d'Abo to form society party band Mike d'Abo's Mighty Quintet, still performing today. Also joined international party band Top Catz as guitarist and MD. Following Millstream’s closure in 1989, he branched out into voiceover work, photographic modelling and acting, dying in an episode of the BBC's Dalziel and Pascoe.
