To be sure, you could see hints of this peeking through in the sad resignation of Before Midnight (where Jesse and Celine seem to realize that even the best relationships eventually enter ruts), or in the way that Boyhood looks back on both childhood and child rearing (indeed, one of the major characters is played by Linklater's own daughter, who also grew up on camera).

For the only other pictorial detail on that little canvas is a bright white glimpse of shirt peeking out from the general darkness, and the funny thing about the shirt is that if you stare at it long enough, its sharply drawn dimensions finally snap into focus: It looks like the blade of an axe, one poised at the neck of that huge, haunting, gap-toothed smile.

Then he turns to other dim sum items under his purview: tender minced chicken and onion dumplings tickled with curry powder; rolls of blistered scallion pancakes with wisps of braised beef peeking through; and sweet sesame-topped hand pies called shaobing, baked from dough stretched thin and painted with oil and lard, and folded into hot pockets that spray bits of crust, like confetti, with every bite.

The particulars of the story are less important than the version that has lodged itself in our imaginations: the tape itself, a choppy cut of generically alarming images; the ringing phone, and the voice on the other end of the line whispering seven days; the inhuman form crawling out of the television; the waterlogged face peeking out from behind the wall of stringy black hair.

The star, who's nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her portrayal as Madeline in HBO's hit miniseries Big Little Lies, debuted on the Emmys red carpet tonight opting for a teal blazer mini dress (with a sheer lace bra peeking out from beneath) instead of a floor-length gown, with matching velvet pointed toe pumps, David Webb jewels and a classic crimson lip.

And the steam table is loaded three rows deep, with more platters crowded on top: whole fish bronzed with turmeric, under kinked ribbons of caramelized onions; small curls of shrimp peeking from a dark thicket of spinach; shutki, sun-dried fish hardly the length of a finger, broken down in a pan with eggplant just enough that you can still taste the eggplant's meatiness and feel the crunch of tiny bones.

"S-Town" is a penetrating psychological portrait of a brilliant, troubled man who has an orator's sense of timing and cadence, even when spewing profanities to Reed: We ain't nothing but a nation of goddamn, chicken-shit, horse-shit, tattletale, pissy-ass, whiny, fat, flabby, out of shape Facebook looking damn twerp-fest, peeking out the windows and slipping around, listening in on the cell phones and spying in the peephole and peeping in the crack of the goddamned door, and listening in the fucking sheet rock.
