The heat carried over to the main event—a five on five Survivor Series match for which I won't recount the participants but will note, as many did in the lead up, that the youngest participant was 34—but dissipated slowly over the course of the overlong match until the arena sounded like a morgue.

Searching for evil bugs (or whatever) as Wolf Link for half an hour upon reaching a new area was always tedious, and the game's overlong tutorial (meant to teach players how to use the brand new—and sort of terrible—Wii motion controls) meant that it was hours before getting into the good stuff.

Morten Strøksnes's Shark Drunk: The Art of Catching a Large Shark from a Tiny Rubber Dinghy in a Big Ocean is exactly what its gleefully overlong title suggests: a humorously quixotic expedition to hook the astonishing Greenland shark, the longest-living vertebrate around, measuring up to 21 feet in length and weighing over a ton.

But reverence is a heavy thing, and it weighs down this nearly three-hour play, whose overlong first act is so devoted to showing its prickly and endearing provocateur in his element — surrounded by admirers and enemies, jousting about virtue or the fundamental properties of color — that it succeeds more on academic merits than dramatic ones.

But 12.2 percent seems to me something that could have been attained in a different world — one without the Reagan and W tax cuts, without the consequent Reagan and W Bush budget deficits, one without the overlong strong-dollar policy and the encouragement of excessive financialization of the economy, and one with proper attention to how manufacturing (and engineering, and design) matters.

"Oslo" (at Lincoln Center's Mitzi E. Newhouse) is a good, if overlong, piece of journalism-theatre—you know, a play that's been "ripped from the headlines" or the history books, presumably to add heat and immediacy to the proceedings—but it has moments of strangeness that suggest what might have been had the playwright, J. T. Rogers, and his director, Bartlett Sher, been more interested in taking risks.

This format worked quite well overall, though it did lead to a few overlong sets (Antimatter played for what felt like a hundred years, though I did enjoy their sad, folky harmonies and the frontman's conviction) as well as a surprisingly short, effective appearance by Icelandic newcomers Glerakur, whose first continental European show was a captivating blur of five guitarists, two drummers, and a flannel-clad bassist who blended 90s alternative, drone, post-rock, and the odd noisy Nirvana-esque squall.

But it is not happening yet, and the wild card races have, brilliant blips and the odd bit of Asdrubalized magic aside, mostly had the same sort of negative, gnawing tension that is more commonly associated with long airport layovers or overlong political campaigns—there is a destination, and the certainty some of arrival at some point in the future, but there is also the overriding sense, here in the moment, that we will never get there, that the tarmac goes on forever and the television does not turn off and all the clocks are stuck stuttering back and forth at a permanent 3:44 PM. The teams in the wild card cannot surge, because they are too imperfect or too broken-down or too tired, or because the opponents with nothing to play for but dignity and spite are fresher and less stressed.
