On 1 October the terms of the Peace of Amiens were agreed, and although news did not reach the Indian Ocean until February 1802 Rainier had been expecting the peace and had launched no offensive operations in the meantime. The Peace effectively returned the theatre to its pre-war status, the only territory which permanently changed hands was Dutch Ceylon, which became a Crown Colony. Both sides sought to use the peace to rebuild their naval forces in the East Indies: no one in the theatre expected the Peace to last long, and when the Napoleonic Wars began in May 1803 both Britain and France maintained powerful squadrons in the Indian Ocean.

At some point the Raffalds had also run the Bulls Head tavern—an important post house in the area, but in August 1772 the couple took possession of a coaching inn they described as: > the old accustomed and commodious inn, known by the sign of the Kings Head > in Salford, Manchester, which they have fitted up in the neatest and most > elegant manner, for the reception and accommodation of the nobility, gentry, > merchants and tradesmen. With a large function room at the premises, the Raffalds hosted the annual dinner of the Beefsteak Club and hosted weekly "card assemblies" during the winter season. Cox relates that Raffald's cuisine and her ability to speak French attracted foreign visitors to the inn. Raffald's sister, Mary Whitaker, opened a shop opposite the Kings Head and began selling the same produce Raffald had from the Fennel Street outlet; Mary also restarted the servants' register office.

One of the "fashionable Pieces of Cabinet Furniture" included a "Pouch Table", whose design was taken and "executed by Mr. M'Lean in Mary-le-bone street, near Tottenham court road, who finishes these small articles in the neatest manner". That John McLean and Son were cabinet-makers of the highest calibre is confirmed by being patronised by such leading connoisseurs as the 5th Earl of Jersey, for whom they worked extensively at Middleton Park, Oxfordshire, and the Earl's London mansion in Berkeley Square. The firm of John McLean and Son advertised that it specialised in "Elegant Parisian Furniture" and although the six surviving pieces that bear his trade label are undoubtedly English, they do owe much to Gallic influence not only in their design. Trade directories from 1809 give "John McLean & Son, upholders" as from 58 Upper Marylebone Street with his son William McLean at the same address.

When the Indians had finished their supper, they took from their baggage a number of scalps, and went about preparing them for the market, or to keep without spoiling, by straining them over small hoops which they prepared for that purpose, and then drying and scraping them by the fire. Having put the scalps, yet wet and bloody, upon the hoops, and stretched them to their full extent, they held them to the fire till they were partly dried, and then, with their knives, commenced scraping off the flesh; and in that way they continued to work, alternately drying and scraping them, till they were dry and clean. That being done, they combed the hair in the neatest manner, and then painted it and the edges of the scalps, yet on the hoops, red. Those scalps I knew at the time must have been taken from our poor family, by the color of the hair.

He married Elizabeth Joan (Betty) Hunter on February 9, 1963; they had four children, sons Edward and David and daughters Karen and Kristin. Vargo officiated in the World Series in 1965, 1971, 1978 and 1983, serving as crew chief in 1978. He worked the NLCS in 1969 (the first NLCS), 1973, 1976 and 1980, and the All- Star Game in 1961 (first game), 1966, 1974 and 1981. He was the home plate umpire for Game 4 of the 1971 World Series, the Fall Classic's first night game. He officiated in eight no-hitters, calling three of them from behind the plate: Don Nottebart's 4-1 win for the Houston Colt .45s over the Philadelphia Phillies on May 17, 1963; Sandy Koufax's record-tying third no-hitter on June 4, 1964, a 3-0 Los Angeles Dodgers win over the Phillies;Coberly, p. 126.

At this period the presses were located in the attic, the must then gravity-fed down pipes to the ground floor where it was fermented in vats, before being piped to the underground stone cellar to mature. A timber, ground- level extension to the cellar may have been constructed by this time. Kircher had under vines around his house, and a vineyard about distant. He was also farming his land, with a paddock under oats and 500 merino sheep. The Kirchers' residence (unlikely to be their first house on the property) was impressive also - described by one reporter in 1881 as "the neatest, best finished, and most comfortable dwelling I have ever seen among Queensland farmers or selectors ...", and in an 1887 report as "one of the most perfect in the colonies". Assmanshausen figured prominently in the 1889 report on viticulture and wine-making in the southern districts of Queensland, prepared by the Under Secretary for Agriculture, Peter McLean, who visited the Warwick district in late 1888 or early 1889.
