Rangaku (literally 'Dutch Learning', and by extension 'Western Learning') is a body of knowledge developed by Japan through its contacts with the Dutch enclave of Dejima, which allowed Japan to keep abreast of Western technology and medicine in the period when the country was closed to foreigners, 1641–1853, because of the Tokugawa shogunate's policy of national isolation (sakoku).

He also became one of the first surgeons to remove an intramedullary tumor from the spinal cord. Catherine Engelhart: King Carl Johan as king of Norway (1875) Born in Copenhagen on 6 February 1845, Catherine Caroline Engelhart was the adopted daughter of the National Bank official Christian Engelhart and his wife Nathalie née Rønne. She was raised in Copenhagen where she was taught to draw and paint by the Danish painter Carl Bøgh (1865–66) but, wishing to keep abreast of the latest developments in art, she travelled abroad from 1867. By relying on a large nuclear arsenal for deterrence, President Eisenhower believed that conventional forces could be reduced while still maintaining military prestige and power and the capability to defend the western bloc. As in these countries, the society reflected the growing professionalism during the second half of the 19th century, necessitating specialisation. The journal was established in 1994 by Roger T. Ames, Professor Emeritus (University of Hawaii) who was at that time director of the UH Center for Chinese Studies, where its editorial office was located. China Review International is published quarterly by the University of Hawaii Press.

During the mid-1920s developments in professional archaeology exerted growing pressure for change in the approaches, methodology and structure of the Royal Commission. The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat "V" to Colonel Stanley Smith Hughes (MCSN: 0-12654), United States Marine Corps, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States with the First Marine Division in connection with military operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam from 8 June 1967 to 22 June 1968. During this period, Colonel Hughes exhibited superior professionalism and dedication in the performance of his demanding duties. Initially serving as Division Inspector, he traveled extensively throughout the Division's Tactical Area of Responsibility to keep abreast of the combat readiness of units and the status of logistical supplies and training programs. With exceptional acuity, he resolved complex problems and assessed the effectiveness with which units performed their assigned missions.

From 1903 until at least 1907, Moore was prominent in the Queensland Institute of Engineers, of which he was elected auditor in November 1905.
