During the period of the British Raj, proponents of British Imperialism typically regarded native Indian culture with disdain and supported European colonization as a beneficial "civilizing mission". Colonization was largely framed as an act of charity aimed at uplifting the "uncivilized" Indian, rather than an act of direct exploitation and domination; which targeted native cultural practices deemed to be "barbaric" by colonial administrators. The sole Game Boy game to be rated M by the ESRB, this version does not include much of the overt gore and violence seen in its parent systems but kept some of the "burning" Fatalities (immolating a defeated opponent down to a burnt skeleton). A scaled-down Game Gear version of Mortal Kombat 3 was released only in Europe. It is almost the same as the Game Boy version, although it is in color and features Noob Saibot as a hidden character. There is also a port for the Sega Master System, which is nearly identical to the Game Gear version, although it was only released in Brazil by Tectoy, distributor of Sega's products in that country.

The conditions were similar to the ones that McDonough faced during her first leadership campaign in Nova Scotia during 1980: a divided party that was self-immolating.

In December 2017, Democrats accused Greitens and senior members of his staff of subverting Missouri's open records laws after the Kansas City Star reported that they used Confide, a messaging app that erases texts after they have been read, on their personal phones. Attorney General Hawley at first claimed conflict of interest, but on December 20 announced his office would investigate, saying that the matter was legally complex because the state Sunshine Law "was written decades and decades ago and has not been updated to take into account" technological changes. In March 2018, Hawley cleared Greitens, finding no evidence of wrongdoing. In late December, two attorneys filed suit, claiming that use of such "self- immolating" apps by elected officials and government employees violates Missouri's public records laws.

A variation of this finisher was included in MKII: entering a different button/joystick combination added the spoken "Toasty!" phrase that simultaneously appeared on the screen. While the "Fire Breath" was brought back for Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe in 2008, his spear has otherwise served as his primary tool in his Fatalities in the three-dimensional games, from impaling his opponents through the head and then decapitating them in Deadly Alliance, using it to yank off their limbs in Deception, and plunging it into their chest before kicking them through a portal that left nothing but a skinned corpse hanging from the spear's chain in MK2011 ("Nether Gate").

Kate goes to visit Helena in the mental institution, who explains how she and her husband knew Dougie from a Sleep Paralysis support group, and begs Kate to let her to see her daughter again, insisting she will die that night at the hands of Mara; as proof, she shows Kate a red mark in her left eye, explaining that Mara marks her victims as a sign that she will kill them. Kate decides to attend the Sleep Paralysis support group run by Dr. Ellis (Mitch Eakins), where she encounters Dougie (Craig Conway), who insists that Mara is real and will kill Saul (Marcus W. Weathersby), then removes Saul's sunglasses (revealing his eyes to be completely red) before storming out. Kate tries to give chase, but loses him. Later that night, Saul goes to the church and commits suicide by immolating himself; around the same time, Kate again awakens in sleep paralysis and again sees a figure, which vanishes as soon as she regains mobility.
